Okay, this may be controversial, but that is good.
Willpower is based on personal energy. Since it's based on personal energy, you have much more of it in the morning than you do later in the day and evening. That's why everything based on willpower falls apart in the evening. Despite your resolutions for doing right, your willpower is shot by dark. Thus, too much drink and food.
Since trying to force yourself to have enough willpower is a losing battle, guess what is constantly working in our emotional & subconscious background and is controlling our behavior without burning any energy...our habits.
UAC is founded on replacing bad habits with thoughtfulness. Thoughtfulness becomes a habit by tracking what goes into our body and what, if any, exercise we do.
Thoughtfulness is not achieved in the mythical 21 days to form a new habit. BUT, the good news is that you can hang in here at the UAC working alongside your team members to become thoughtful. After you become thoughtful, you will develop new habits....over time.
After you have new habits, then it will become difficult to overeat; over drink; and under exercise.
For those who know this is true...what do you say?12 -
Date: August 6

Hi UAC!
I have been traveling a lot this summer and I am finding it too hard to post right now. So I am going to take a break from posting and take that off my plate. I will still track everything. I'm the kind of person that has a hard time giving half effort on things and for a few months now I have not been able to give the effort that I want to. I will be back when I feel like I can contribute the way I want to .
Thanks to you all!!13 -
@RangerRickL I totally believe our over eating is from habits, for me I tend to eat when I am bored, stressed or tired. I am trying to change these habits and looking after me by really listening to my body, very seldom do I get bored anymore so I have changed that one...I am dealing better with the stress in our lives better so I am getting there.....lol
Good news is today is my weigh in day and I lost 1.6lbs. My goal for August is to lose 5 so this is a GREAT start to it! My 6 week total since coming back here is now 10.8lbs.....very excited about this............I CAN DO THIS! "Taking it one day at a time with the attitude of the LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD"
I am off to work now, will check in tonight with my positive results for the day
Hugs to everyone that wants one!17 -
I’m constantly working on replacing my old habits with ones that serve me better. Mindfulness is one tool I use. I am learning to replace empty calories with healthy alternatives. I haven’t banished any foods, but am mindful of the quantities and frequency of their consumption.
Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? Yes. 16 dynamic yoga, 30 HIIT walking video, 30 minutes steady walking.
Did I stay within my calorie goal for the day? Yes.
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank? Yes
Pass Days (for my own information 😂)0/3 passes used9 -
tracking is the habit for me to work at right now. every time I eat I track (I only drink water) and I think this is crucial as I eat I track and for this to go hand in hand with that thoughtfulness. I thought the tracking was something I needed to take a break from because I thought it might be obsessive but once the food is logged I forget about it. without logging/tracking I was thinking about what I'd had what I could have I was much much more obsessed. this is my 3 successful day in a row and I'm pleased: all food tracked. under limit. and exercised well. I also agree willpower runs out at the end of the day and I save a couple squares of chocolate for then - just had them! at first I wanted more but the cravings passed along nicely now. best wishes everyone x8

Yes x 3. Pilates and walking.
Willpower and habits. They can be interlinked. I can lose my willpower and get back into old bad habits.
I saw something online that I posted on "what's on your mind" a few days ago that struck me as summarising my journey. It advised our lifestyle choices or habits to be consistently good enough vs inconsistently perfect. This month I'm striving to be good enough and keeping at it rather than perfect and then failing.
Another article I saw said something along the lines of 4+4=8. But so does 6+2 and other combinations. What works for some to get to their goal may not be the best way for others. Many of you post about not limiting food groups and having everything you want in moderation. That's great that that works for you. I'm realising that I may be a sugar addict and by cuttng out processed foods with sugar is when I feel best and lose most successfully. Anyway, this has turned into an essay so I'll stop there but thanks to @RangerRickL for making me be thoughtful about it all. Hope you've a had a great day.8 -
Catching up with posting Sun-Tues plus getting back on track with tracking.
Exercised - Yes for all 3 days - Pawgust dog walks and CX Works class
Calories - Unlikely

I agree with everything above. I cannot rely on willpower alone as it goes awol at times. Mindfulness is a huge effective habit to get into.7 -

Taking a pass day. Just not feeling well emotionally today. Carrying heavy burdens for a couple of friends. I think I'll head to bed a little early.12

Pass days August 4 & 5 for me. Used old habits of eating and definitely overindulged. Knew I was doing it but did it anyway. Working on steering the boat back in the right direction without being too harsh with myself.

Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? yes, I closed my move ring even though I only got 2 hours of sleep.
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? yes
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank? yes & no alcoholic beverages
I have reflected on will power & habits today. I will never understand why at certain times of my life I have had consistent willpower for extended periods of time. Other times I have to hard knuckle & fight for every ounce I lose. I know what to do. I know what my habits need to be. I know what I should & should not eat. I just don’t always do it. Is it because the habits that got me overweight are stronger than the ones that make me healthy? I think it goes back to yesterday & remembering & constantly reminding yourself that you are worth more. Worth more than the glass of wine, cookie or extra serving at supper. Worth enough enough to allow the comfort habits to fall away & to not get irritated by leading a healthy lifestyle. That should be the norm, not the other way around. I guess the key really is the habit of thoughtfulness. Thinking about what you are doing & planning rather than just “living”7 -

I worked a long day at work and am finally home. I ate moderately during the day but don't know my exact calories. My win for the day is coming home and 'not' drinking wine or eating sugar. This is my normal behavior for this type of extra long work day. Tonight I skipped both and discovered that I was fine. I normally do this to help wind down. I wanted to try an evening without either and found out that I am more or less okay. I am tired and going to bed now. I have an early day tomorrow and I suspect I will wake up tomorrow happy that I made this choice tonight.9 -

Like @znaoiec, this month, I am being very thoughtful about my self-created habit of an end of the day red wine. I bought the book, The Alcohol Experiment, by Anne Grace. I"m on Day 3. Although, my wine habit is usually just one glass per day, I have developed cravings for it. That is what bothers me.
The Alcohol Experiment is a like a 30 day challenge. For me that means that it will span the months of August and September. I'll keep you posted as I need the accountability of posting.

My job is notorious for bringing in food, catered lunch today and catered breakfast and lunch tomorrow. Luckily I work for a sports organization so they try to have at least one healthy option. Working hard to track calories, I've been cooking at home for the last week which makes it easier to control my diet. Eating out too much has always been my downfall.4 -
Aug 6: yes x 3: only 6 calories under but I'll take it!
Arm challenge day 3, ab workout, 2,000M row and 50min elliptical.
I'm trying to kick my refined sugar habit. Until you try to reduce the amount you intake on a daily basis you dont realize how much sugar one eats in a day.

Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? 2 mile walk and about an hour of yoga.
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? Yes, actually under my target w/exercise by about 350. I'm "saving" some of my calories for Friday and Saturday this week.
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank? Yes.4 -
Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? 52 minutes of strength this morning (Leg Day!) and 2 mile treadmill walk this afternoon
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? Yes and under
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank? Yep!
Wow, @RangerRickL, this has honestly opened my eyes to something I never realized. I never thought of "willpower" being something we all have a certain amount and by the end of the day, it's just tapped out. That so explains my craving for sweet things at night! I've always had those cravings, but I just do my best to "trick" them by having fruit or something that tastes naughty but isn't (like a chocolate "nice" shake). Now that I have a better grasp on what's going on, I'm going to have to tweak my strategies a bit more.
@pribud Congrats on the loss! That is a great start to August!
@BonnieHosk85 So sorry to hear you're not feeling well.5 -
Yes x 3. Exercise was strength training, tennis and walking.
I think this spring I conquered the last of my bad habits, but the effort has taken years. UAC has been amazing at reinforcing those good habits. Those good habits seem fairly easy now. The real test will be the next pressure cooker situation but hopefully that won’t be anytime soon.6 -
