We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for June are below:

Monday -Imastar2 (Derrick)
Tuesday - GavinFlynn1 (Gavin)
Wednesday - myallforjc (Bill)
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - whathapnd (Emmie)

Today's Topic: Deserts, Sweets, Sugar, Cookies and the like. Sweets can really wreck a day or a week.
1. What's your plan for these delicious morsels. Do you have a handle on these items? Do you plan for sugary items? Or if you have points or kcals left over and do you work them into your plan?

My daily chocolate fix is part of my plan. Knowing that I will have it every day keeps me from over doing the sweets.

    All things in moderation.

I found I am better off not to have sweets. When I was working, there was candy everywhere. When I eat candy, I crave sugar in a short while. Now I don't buy it and I don't have it in my house. If we go on a trip and dessert is served, I fall back into old habits.

Not a big sweets guy. I try to stay away from breakfast breads etc. Once in a while, I will share a desert with DW and track it. Tracking it and seeing the points explosion helps reinforce the "not worth it" mindset. I do like to bake, so when I am in that mode, I generally give it away or just taste enough to make sure all is well. Some that I do eat I figure out points, portion size etc and plan around.

Ice cream. If it’s some sort of diet modified ice cream type thing, I’ve likely tried it. Current fave is Breyer’s No Sugar Added.

If I got a chocolate thing going I’ll add a bit of Hershey’s Sugar Free chocolate syrup. A poor substitute for actual chocolate but will do in a pinch. Usually the little bit of chocolate in the Nature Valley protein bar snack is enough chocolate for the day.

I’ve eaten ice cream nearly every day since joining WW. Can’t be on a diet if I’m eating ice cream right? But this- if I go for some other treat during the day- no ice cream. If I start eating ice cream over my planned portion, I’d have to rethink the whole program. On MFP I’m currently using about 7% of my daily calories on ice cream. Well spent.

I'm more of a salty snacker than sweets. That said, I do LOVE good sweets. I also like to bake, but food allergies/sensitivities limit what I (should) consume. I can easily work into my weekly budget small servings of things like potato chips. However, a nice slice of cake/ pie or something like that needs to be limited to once a week or less. I'm also in the camp of eating sugar then craving sugar.

I generally try to limit my intake of desserts to just the weekend (Friday night/Saturday lunch meals). I'm "intuitive" in my maintenance/loss, and so I generally know that if I stick to my usual plan, things work out correctly for me. If I have a bit more intake than normal, I tend to gain. That's the problem with being a smaller individual, there's somewhat less flexibility because I already need to have such limited intake that a bit more or a bit less really makes a difference!

Sweets lately have been my vice. I nibble here and nibble there and then bam gone too far. Will probably have to cut them ot almost completely.

I do avoid buying ice cream and bringing it home especially in larger amounts. Hard to totally manage for sure.

I can't seem to control myself when confronted with sweets. A plate of brownies was in front of me Sunday. 4 or 5 pieces gone before TOL took them away to the "kids table" (the 20 somethings were playing Doungeons and dragons).

I occasionally have some sweet things around, but I am pretty good about limiting consumption to a specific, small amount in the evening, after dinner. The one exception is ice cream, which I rarely have in the house and only consume when out and about, as a special treat. Otherwise, I'll eat it. All of it.
