Zero Point Soup

Zero Point Soup was a useful tool for many of us just starting out with WW. I used it all the time. But, it seems that there were a lot of tweaks people made to the recipe - sometimes making it 1- or 2-point soup instead of 0-point soup.
What recipe did you use? The basic? A little tweak here or there? Do you still use 0-point soup?

I never found it satisfying. I make Gavin's chili and with 99% ground turkey or added chicken breast it is Zero points.1

Years ago, I made the soup for the Cabbage Soup Diet and really liked it. Now, when I make it, I omit the onion soup mix and season mainly with thyme and chili powder. (Sounds weird, but it's delicious.) I braise the cabbage and onions until they're both a little brown to build flavor. I also add chicken.

My zero point soup system (it was a system) was key to me. I would not have made it through the Chicago winters eating salads. In fact, our daughter used to refer to the zero point soup that my wife made as hot salad.
So we started with the WW zero point basics. But I don’t like a lot of broth in my soup. Out in the pre WW world my approach to soup would be lots of soda crackers. But soda crackers are points. So to get away from the crackers I did 2 things.
First like I said, we started with soup without much broth. But then I added brown rice.
And to make the soup a meal I needed protein. Grilled chicken mostly.
But if I just made a big pot of zero point soup with chicken and rice the points would likely sink to the bottom and I’d lose control of the points.
So the brown rice, the chicken, and the soup were all precooked. At dinner the rice was measured, by 1/4 cup = 1 pt at the time, the chicken was weighed, 1 pt per oz as I recall. The budgeted portions were added to a bowl of soup and it all went into the micro wave. Top with Parmesan cheese. Warm, filling, satisfying and everything counted. Ready to eat in minutes.
Actually in the interest of truth in advertising I should call this DW’s Zero Point Soup System. She did 90% of the work.1 -
Oh and a note on precooked brown rice. I don't know if it was any particular brand, but the stuff was practically indestructible. Now I was just putting it into the soup. But even after being in the freezer it didn’t just form into a big ball of goo like white rice does.1

Ok, I'm lazy. I am perfectly fine with the Progresso Light 1 and 2 point soups. They are a go to meal when I am serious about getting a few pounds off.1

I was in a WW meeting with a newbie. She said she had the zero point soup all the time but wasn't losing weight. Upon further discussion, she said she was adding pasta to the soup but didn't think that counted. The leader diplomatically clarified the pt system.1

When Freestyle started with turkey chili I LOVED it! But as with anything that is too good to be true I learned that Zero Points is NOT Zero calories
I haven’t made any in a long time but it will be Fall cool weather I will make it again.
I do buy Progresso soups in winter, split pea and French onion. Still try to remember the sodium may be high.1 -
Yes Jim, you learn quickly to get the portions under control with zero point meals like the chili. 1 cup max if eating just a bowl.0

I’m with Lowbar31. I don’t remember ever making the zero point soups, but I sure bought a lot of the Progresso soups.
I miss eating 10 can chili regularly. DW insists on making my food herself, and can’t seem to accept that I can enjoy eating the same thing for lunch every day. Just this week she offered to make the chili again, and I was way more excited than is proper. 😂0 -
DW and I never really had much time to fix zero pt soup consequently I never ate much of it. The other on the shelf soups had way too much sodium in them to suit me even the low sodium ones.0

for me basically all soups are zero points until I decide to add stuff like grains or meats to them. I start with a basically zero stock add a ton of garden herbs and veggies to make a base. No recipes needed or desired for me.0
