We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion. Thread starters for September are below:

Monday -88olds (George)
Tuesday - Imastar2 (Derrick)
Wednesday - gavinflynn1 (Gavin)
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - Al_Howard (Al Howard)

Today’s Topic: Scares

Have you had a resent "scare" that made you more mindful of your weight loss/maintain journey?

As Friday is our weigh-in day, we plan for a “date night” almost every week. Last Friday we stayed home, with me making a fine dinner of steak (5 oz. cooked), a baked potato (10.5 oz cooked), and veggies. Also some cheese and crackers (all measured), and TOL had a bottle of wine, and I a six pack of Sam Boston.
Not too bad and expecting a “bump” on the morning scale but got 12.4# gain. OK, a lot of beers and water consumed, but… Sunday was ONLY down 4#. The rest of the week (although being even more careful than usual) was pretty much the same 0, .2, or so a day.
Yesterday TOL and I were grousing about it, and DGD, 26, who lives with us, and does WW on-line, said she was up about 5# this week, and we complained together. Finally, I decided to check the scale. Got my 12# dumbbell, set the scale, and weighed it. 17.6#. I changed the batteries, and 12.0#. AH HA! The culprit was found.
All in all, a good laugh, BUT all three of us were more mindful for the week because of our “scare”.

In 2012 I was diagnosed with bladder cancer. Tumor was removed, about 1 year+ of unpleasant treatments, there’s been no recurrence.

I’d been maintaining about 5 1/2 years when I was diagnosed. I continued to maintain throughout. I don’t know what caused my cancer. My previous reckless lifestyle? Unknown. But no Dr ever suggested that I’d be better off treating my cancer 100 lbs heavier. That’s about as scared as I’ve been.

Well I started out back at 2010-2011 @ 440.8 lbs. 1st scare I couldn't walk 50 feet without losing my breath. Dropped a hundred to 295 held that weight for quite a long time. Too long in fact. Got comfortable with it and began to put weight back on till I got back to 340+-. Then recently got sick 1st time August got on an antibiotic. Then got hit again same thing with upper respiratory infection and got another round of antibiotics. In the mean time I gained from 340 lbs to 359.6 lbs by October 4th. I had been just sitting around and not a lot of activity. I began to be out of breath just walking from bedroom to kitchen. So I made some Dr appointments with my MD and my Cardiologist. In the meantime I've now seen them but at the same time speedily doing what I needed to do. Tracking, portion control, and cutting back on carbs and almost no sugar products.

So results 22.2 lb lost since 10/4/19 which is 6 weeks. I had to lose 5 lbs or the Heart Center wouldn't do a pet scan on 11/27/19.

So yes had to the scare but have 3 test on 11/27/19.
    Pet Scan
    Carotid Artery scan
Chemical street test. ( had one of these before but I called it a nuclear stress tess.

I'm feeling a lot better since losing over 20 lbs. Onward and downward.

first scare was November 2006, I had a heart attack. 2 stents and 13 years later 60 pounds lighter, I just had another 1 this week. Been dealing with some pain around my upper left thigh. Finally got to the Doctor and the 1st diagnosis is bursitis. I had been dealing with it by taking tylenol and soaking in the hot tub at my YMCA. In discussion with the Dr. (and My DW who is also a Dr.) I realized that it has been going on for the best part of a year, and that it has reduced my ability or willingness to get any regular exercise by huge margins! I realized that a year ago I was averaging over 12K steps a day and now I am under 6K! Big wake up call for me. So the first step is to treat the condition which will start with some prednizone for the next week. The 2nd is that I may have to start getting into the pool for exercise because it does not cause the same kind of muscle strains. I don't love the water, by I have always know that as I age this day may come. So later today its off to the Y we go (in Charlotte where we are this weekend) so I can do some laps and maybe some water aerobics if they have a class.

A year ago this week I was in hospital for surgery on pinched nerve Lumbar 4-5. After dealing with leg problem since June A few tests MRIs and nerve tests now have slipped disc Lumbar 2-3!
Yesterday I was advised to get surgery. Not a weight scare but I’m glad to not have to lose weight after being below GW since May 2018.
Old age (71) is a PITA :smirk:

Sorry to hear about that Jim, Yeah getting old (68) is not for sissy's! Dealing with problems in my left leg right now current diagnosis is bursitis. First pass at a fix is some steroids which is messing up my weight and morning blood sugars. I hope it resolves the issue because thats a simple fix and its only a weeks worth of new drugs.

    Good luck Jim!

For me, I recently learned that I now have high blood pressure. That’s a new and unwelcome change. But it also gave me a chance to admit that I haven’t been taking my health seriously. I joined the accountability challenge, and that is helping.

Hang in there Gavin, Jim...well everyone. I too fired my scale when I was maybe half way toward my healthy weight range. I was just wonky.Step on it 3 times and 3 different weights.
I bought a new spendy scale when I was closer to my healthy range. It is same scale that WW uses in their meetings. I don't have computer hook-up but otherwise identical in every way. Sadly it never lies now.
