We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Today's Topic: Getting Ahead of Yourself

Do you ever veer off course because you start thinking too much about the future? You've been doing a great job sticking to the plan you set for yourself, and you're seeing results and feeling confident. But then you start thinking a little too far ahead - - like to how great 20 pounds lost is going to feel/look instead of focusing on what you need to do to lose the .5 - 2 pounds you can lose this week.

Sound familiar? Is it helpful/unhelpful to focus on the future? What do you do to get your focus back on the present?

Bonus question: Hot cereal or cold cereal? Be specific.

I've realized I do this a lot. I've always been a dreamer with a vivid imagination, and focusing on the future is is how I'm wired. I have to work a little harder to stay focused on the present and current tasks. (I also think I have undiagnosed ADD.) I think acknowledging this and understanding how that thinking can get in the way of obtaining what I want long-term will be helpful in keeping me focused. I know it won't be easy simply because I've acknowledged it, but when I find myself struggling, one of the questions I'm going to ask myself is, " How prepared are you for the next two to seven days?" I do fine with weight loss when I'm thinking/planning in short increments.

Bonus question: Oatmeal for the win, although I do enjoy some cold cereals that are lightly sweetened. I prefer long-cooked regular or Irish oats with a bit of brown sugar and blueberries if I have them. Or a scoop of peanut butter and some banana. Yum!

Agreed. The next week, or day is better for concentration. That said, I still want my e day weekend :)

Bonus: Almost always have a big bowl 1/3+ cups on old fashioned oats, nuked 11 min. on 60% power, with 200 gm. FF Greek yogurt, Torani sugar free brown sugar cinnamon flavored syrup and the juices from the frozen strawberries or blueberries. Then I add a sliced banana and the strawberries and blueberries and nuke on high foe a couple of mins. Absolutely YUM!

Some days are harder than others to stay in the moment, especially when it comes to trying to deal with work tasks. The looming uncertainty of the fall semester and the impact the virus will continue to have weighs heavy on my mind. Some of the work I'm doing may need to change radically based on the direction we take as an institution.

Uncertainty drives my anxiety which in turn drives my overconsumption of snacks.

Bonus: Crunchy, lightly sweetened cereal with very cold almond milk for the win. Very hard to keep from eating a box in one day. I rarely buy cereal because I know what the outcome will be.

@whathapnd / If I had write my thoughts outcit would almost duplicated what you said so I'm going to plagiarize you post and repeat it except I'll change up my cereal a little.

Not so much. I have done ok on WW in part because I didn't have any time or weight based expectations that dwell on the future. As we are reminded in yoga, we can do nothing about the past and are not living in the future either. We live today and make decisions today.
Of course I worry about lots of things but do try to take some time daily to live in the moment.

This rarely is an issue for me. My weight problems stem from making stupid, in-the-moment, errors in judgement without really considering the longer term ramifications.
