We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Today's Topic: What is a "snack"?

Is "snack" a noun, a verb or both for you? Is it eating outside of larger, more structured meals, or is it a category of foods? Is snacking part of your plan or something you wince at doing?

I'm currently thinking of "snacks" as foods that aren't particularly nutritious. Some days I graze rather than eating two or three distinct meals, but as long as the foods aren't "junk," I'm tracking them in MFP as part of a meal. My main reason for doing this is an effort to identify and reduce the number of "useless" calories I'm consuming. Alcohol, sweets, chips and crackers go in the snack category. Dried fruit is a snack unless added to oatmeal. Cheese and nuts go into one of the meal slots.

This has been useful for reducing empty calories - - for now.

I think of anything of caloric value (or non-value) consumed outside of "regular" meals, as snack, noun and verb. ;)

I'm in Al's camp. Anything that isn't a meal is a snack. Doesn't matter what time or what the food is. Last night I had an ounce of almonds about 8:00. That was a snack to me. I've sometimes had a scrambled egg as a snack because it was out of the realm of my regular meals. I've often had oatmeal as a snack for the same reason.

Ditto regarding anything outside of my three square meals as a snack.
I never bristle at the concept of snacking for a couple of reasons. I am not overly concerned over “clean eating” or nutrition. And as long as I am happy with my weight trends for the week I am fine with eating any snack. Also, the Plan is written to include snacks, not regiment or prohibit them.

Never really thought much about I before now. Thanks for the topic, Emmie!

Big snacked here. A couple of pieces of fruit, treats, sometimes something to keep me from getting too hungry and charging into a meal. Pretty much all planned. 3 meals, 4 snacks.

In addition to snacks, I would add "treats". I am in the camp that any thing that is not part of a meal is a snack. However there are time when a snack can also be a treat. IE a trip to our local Ice cream parlor for a scoop of their flavor of the month is a snack and a treat. A cheese stick of 11 almonds are just a snack.
Sometimes a meal can be a treat as well. Last night It was salmon coated with a crap and shrimp dip type coating smoked on a cedar plank in my smoker. I had 8 or 9 ounces of it. Its a meal but it was definitly also a treat.

I don't generally subscribe to the three meals a day thing. It's all eating. If I get hungry, I eat. If I am not hungry, I don't eat. Usually. If I follow this pattern, I lose weight. Sometimes I eat more. Sometimes I eat less.

But, it's all eating. If I was going to label something as a snack, it might be eating something when I don't need it, or just because I want it.

I keep a lot of fruit and crudites around to combat my penchant for stress and boredom eating.

    But, it's all eating.
