We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Today's Topic: Consistency

How do we develop consistency in our lifestyle? How do we do the right things we know we should do from day to day? Is purely the development of habits? Is it just the tedium of identifying a sequence of steps and not veering from them? Is it goal-setting and rewards? Or, is it something else?

In the beginning I did have to focus on counting points and learning the ropes day after day after day. I think part of being consistent is having the occasional unplanned for moments, shrugging them off and getting back the next meal or next day. Repeat. When I was learning the ropes I didn't think of it emotionally as tedium per se and just gave it a chance. No specific goals and no rewards.

I think trying to be an all or nothing mr/ms perfect would not have helped me at all. I usually lost weight when I had maybe a couple of unplanned for excursions during the week.
I liked that WW had an "award" for 16 weeks(?) as I recall. It definitely takes time to get there on the trail.
Eating CORE/SFT foods helps a lot too.

I have mentioned before that I am a creature of habit. For the most party it serves me well. I also don’t consider a sequence of steps and habitual repetition either boring nor troublesome. Again, that works for me.
In regards to the weight loss, having a Goal that I can works towards with tools like tracking is another tool of consistency. Additional tools are meal planning and also planning for snacks and treats.
    Like chocolate.
There are few things in my life that demand consistency and I find that I am only ready when I am ready. There’s no amount of pressure either internal or external that motivates me enough to get up and do it. However when I get to that point of decision or desperation there is little that can throw me off course.
Kind of odd and I can’t adequately explain it.

    1. Is it just the tedium of identifying a sequence of steps and not veering from them? Is purely the development of habits?
I believe in doing something consistently till it becomes a habit. If I fail i need to stop think and reevaluate.

I interpret this question / statement for me as pertaining to WI Daily (not for everybody),
tracking, & portion control and keeping up with nutritional values ie; Protein, Carbs, Fats
    3. The something else for me could be is motivation to stick with a program for health sake. I
    do enjoy tackling the problem and working with it and setting the goals etc;
    Could be called HOPE! ?
