We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Today's Topic: Interruption(s)
We've all heard we interrupt this scheduled programming to bring you this breaking news!!

Well as hard as we try to plan things daily, weekly, monthly it seems invariably interruptions happen of all varieties.

Do you find it hard to navigate around these interruptions and do you find it difficult to take the easy way out and stop by a fast food place and smash your diet/maintenance plan(s). Or do you just go with the flow re adjust and move on.
Or! Do you actually have a plan? which most of us don't.

I bring forth this re used topic simply because things do happen that can interrupt our plans. It's not that their bad always or serious but just simply an interruption. Unavoidable or planned we just didn't expect it or have it anywhere on our radar.

Got to thinking about it because DW's very Elderly Cousin never been married no children out lived most all relatives. We find out this morning she's been admitted to ER @ Emory Atlanta during the night from one other Cousin that lives near by. We're awaiting word because they wouldn't let us go in if we were there. So more on that later but it got me to thinking since there wasn't a topic yet today I'd throw it out.

DS needs a battery for his Auto that's a small one but trying to fit that in to. Got work going on and have planned a birthday dinner for a young man that's a dear friend and really kinda alone today. So day has started out with unexpected interruptions.

Do I have a plan? Yes!! Yes!! Innovate, react possitively, if necessary go with plan A or use the stand by method but don't yield to the temptation of running by fast food joint and grab a burger and fries for lunch and eat it on the run. DW and I will be together on much of what's going today so we kinda give each other strength.

I know the best places to grab a lunch that would do the least damage to my daily caloric plan so I'll just have to get that figured out along with possibly heading into Atlanta late tonight or in the AM depending on that situation.

So this happens but this time the only off the wall item on my agenda today is to eat a very small manageable piece of Birthday cake with our friend after dinner this evening.

Yes interruptions are a part of life we jus have to deal with them and move on.🤔

Last Wednesday, TOL and I had a wonderful visit from one of our adult granddaughters, which threw our daily plan into the trash. Ate our normal lunch late, and by the time we felt interested in dinner, it was late, and I wasn't into cooking. Went to BK and had a Whopper, small fries, and diet colas. 33 SPs on WW. Still lost for the week. Can't let a one-off toss us.

I find "interruptions" to be challenging. At baseline, I am not the most flexible individual in the world, and once I have a plan, I like to stick to it. Thus, when there's a sudden change-in-plans, I sometimes struggle with that. Obviously, I do my best to minimize the damage, but there's always "damage" in terms of not sticking perfectly to my plan.

What I find particularly difficult is that I don't get that many calories to work with. So, just a couple of hundred calories this way or that way put me on one side of the gain/loss equation versus the other side.

Because of this issue, I actually spend some time thinking about how to avoid changes of plan. For example, there are few, if any, kosher options for eating out or bringing in food. As such, we eat in most of the time, and because of that, I've developed a number of "standard-meals" that fill me up and don't have too many calories. I'm very happy eating this way and I can lose weight with this approach. During COVID, though, there have been occasional "pop-up" kosher pick-up options. These are always very tasty, but also significantly higher in calories than I'd prefer. Yes, I know I could just "eat less" of them, but then I don't feel sated, and I end up looking for more food. Instead, then, when I find out this is coming, I will often just find a home meal to eat and skip the take-out meal entirely. It's not a perfect plan, but I'm much happier that way!

I was thinking this morning just how many disruptions there have been thus far in 2020 for all my normal routines.

January-March - extremely busy at work as I took on the job responsibilities for a colleague who retired at the end of 2019. There was no one to take on what I was previously doing.

April-May - no fitness center (personal nor retirement community), no arboretum, 100% working offsite and feeling very isolated.

June - retirement community fitness center reopened - finally some human interaction each day! Arboretum also reopened for members by reservation only!

July - Finalized the hiring of my replacement for my original job. She starts 7/20. Fitness center that I used to go to reopened 7/6 but I ended up trying out the community fitness center that reopened 7/1 instead. Much, much smaller and requires reservations. I feel safe working out there. At the university, I am relocating my office to a different floor so I can be near my new advisor. Although for at least the fall semester, we won't be on campus much. All meetings and student advising will be done virtually.
