We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Today's Topic: GOAD The Book

Sometimes I think I want to try my hand at writing a diet book. Sometimes I think we should write a diet book here on GOAD. It would be helpful to have an outline. Just because it seems to make for a handy and usable format, lets start with 4 sections. What are the 4 things we want to cover in broad term? Any way you want to organize it, What 4 sections should there be in GOAD the book?

Oooh, this is a fun question!

    Four things to cover:
    1. The fundamentals of weight loss (calories in versus calories out; how the body works, movement and exercise, etc.)
    2. Know what your eating (fundamentals of calorie content and density of foods)
    3. General strategies (how to apply the first two sections in real life; not really dogmatic, but rather the issues to consider)
    4. Myth-busters (a section to dispel magical thinking about weight loss)

I’m thinking like- Weight Loss in 4 parts:

    -Get your mind right
    -Get to work
    -Keep your mind right
    -There is no finish line

    Some explaining-

    Get your mind right

Start with a slap in face. A college professor friend, who has actually published a couple of books says you have to write with your audience in mind. I want to write for people who want to lose weight because its a health issue. In WW we embraced everyone who wanted to lose, but losing 5-10 lbs for swimsuit season isn’t going to keep me working on a book, I’m talking changing the course of your life. Why its the right thing to do. How habits work. How to change them. How to change your life.

    Get to work

What exercise and the gym will and won’t do for you.
Calorie counting. Why it works and the nuts and bolts of how to do it. This will be a long section.

    Keep your mind right

Now that you have a plan, how are you going to live with it? Persistence and determination, and how to get them. Problem solving.

    There is no finish line

Advanced problem solving. Maintenance. Damage control. Repair and remodeling. It really is a lifestyle.

    Love this topic!.

    1. Decision
    2. Tracking
    3. Balance
    4. Don't quit/ Persistence

    1. Decide to lose weight for whatever reason(s) that may spur you on to get to where you want or need to be. Take action now today no use putting it off. Adapt to a new lifestyle and decide to live it.

    2. Track everything everyday no matter the quanities no matter the points/calories or iinterruptions.

    3. Balance approach to meals/foods/times. There are a lot of diet variations but experience tells us that there are no shortcuts and most fad diets don't keep the weight off long term.

    4. Whatever happens just stick with it through thick or thin. There is no leanear straight line to weight loss. Attitude to carry on because each day is a new day. We all start from zero every morning. If we slip up and fall we start fresh the next morning.

All of these are excellent. I am not sure what I can add. It definitely would be important to emphasize that there is no finish line and that you have to maintain your perseverance.
