Juice Plus?

My cousin, whom I trust a lot, has started taking Juice Plus. She got into it because her daughter has suffered over her whole life, even as an infant, with IBS related issues. She has taken her to different doctors, specialist, nutritionist etc...no one has been able to take away the joint pain, inflammation, stomach issues etc...until now. So far Juice Plus has been a true life saver for her daughter., she herself has also started taking it. Her daughter is 18, they've been doing this for 2 months now.

So of course with them feeling better, my cousin has lost some weight without effort, more energy, better sleep and she's a smoker too...it has helped her breathing (she is amazed by this). She is now signed up to sell it.

I made mention I was curious, because I am so happy her daughter is finally getting relief. I was thinking of how hard it will be to absorb nutrients, vitamins, minerals...esp when our focus has to be protein first.

So before I take a chance on this product...I have read 50/50 pro/con doing a google search. I am leary of the high cost, it will cost me $100/mth...that is a high price to pay for our family...but I will get product to share with one child for free (I have 4 kids, but do have one in particular I would love to see if it would help).

It is a supplement to a regular diet, not meant to be a weight loss diet, tho people do tend to lose weight. I've read it works on a cellular level...so you have to give it a chance, you get 4 mths mailed to you. Some say it stops cravings for sugary crappy foods, because your body is getting the nutrients that are missing.

So, I am looking for personal experiences...not a sales rep opinion. I am hoping to know info, directly related to gastric bypass and if your dr's recommended it., how has it worked out?

Thanks in advance...any info is appreciated before I sign up. My hubby didn't say no to it, despite the cost...we will work it out, if it is worth it...but he is thinking I should wait until I actually have the surgery...but I would like to see if helps now...I have low iron, no energy, skin issues, hair breakage...despite eating well, and being mindful of taking my vitamins for surgery. So my thinking, is this could be the missing link...fill the "gap" they talk about it.

I have an open mind to alternative medicine...but I am a realist too.

I haven't tried Juice Plus but I had bypass in April and I have found that the Journey 3+3 vitamins from Bariatric Eating work really well for me. At my doc appt a few weeks ago my levels were all really good.

As for hair, Biotin alone didn't do much for me and Bariatric Eating sells a Hair Balance vitamin. Was at the hair dresser the other day and she said she can tell where I lost hair because it was thinned out but she said she can see its growing back due to the baby hairs in its place.

I was on Amazon the other day and there is a vitamin called Hair Anew with tons of very high ratings and seems the results were fast. It was about $29 a bottle so I bought it and will give it a try.

The 3+3 is $45/month but it's 3 pills in the morning and 3 at night. Personally I take the capsules and it has everything you need. The Hair Balance is $35 and I think it is a 2 month supply

You asked, so here's my two cents: happy for your friend and her daughter, but $100/month is a LOT. More than I could afford. And two months is not a particularly significant length of time to go into it full bore. See how they're doing/feeling in a year. Meanwhile: make healthy choices for your family... you didn't really say how you're doing, personally that would sway you to thinking you need JP??

Thanks, At the moment I do not think I need it. I have read all the positive and negatives about them on the web...or enough to realize it's split 50/50 good/bad. Which is why I wanted to ask. :)

I too am leary of MLM, not so much on all the products, but the hidden agenda of trying to make money from marketing to friends, family etc. Tho this is my cousin, whom I trust 100%, and her daughter really is feeling better...and I am so happy for them, they have a long history of trying everything., with nothing working. But I don't have any major issue that warrants the cost.

So I come to it with the objective of bariatric surgery, knowing we are a special case, not getting a full vitamin/mineral diet on food alone, we must rely on supplements after surgery. So I am looking at it purely for that reason.

I want the best outcome at the end of this...and they sound good...but are so expensive. I would prefer to just find a health store, pharmacy...because they have FDA approval, and I know they are safe and each tablet is what it says. They don't have FDA behind them, they have some other thing??FSA. From what I've read, they paid for their own research and reviews, which is biased.

I saw my Internist Dr yesterday, she has not heard of the product...she suggested I ask, my dietitian. She feels taking a multivitamin, and perhaps a couple extra specific supplements (for me that is iron, vit D)...I will get more than enough. I see the dietitian in Jan.

For me personally, I take a multi, Vit D, and B12 about every other day or so. I try to get my nutrients the old fashioned way. I'm weary of any MOM products, especially ones in the nutrition space. Just based on price I wouldn't touch.

I'm curious, am I the only one here prescribed bariatric multivitamin? @nakeddog you might want to check with your surgeons office.

I'm sure my bariatric team is not the be all and end all knowledge of vitamins...We are all adults..make are own choices...I'm not plugging a product.

Patient through my office take a medical grade bariatric specific multivitamin for life. Some are covered by insurance if you get them through the pharmacy. The list gives multivitamins that are designed for higher absorption. The list was provided due to manufacturers trying to market" bariatric vitamins" when they are just standard over the counter vitamins.

The only over the counter bariatric vitamin on the list was Optisource. It's in a chewable that is easy on your stomach post surgery.

@fit_chickx I was never put on a prescription Bariatric multi. My doc didn't even think I should buy Bariatric vitamins. Basically he told me to take Centrum chewables or any OTC chewanle, plus calcium citrate plus D. I apparently didn't need iron. My Bariatric nutritionist has me on B12. I added fish oils, biotin, curcurmin, super b complex and magnesium for headache management (I have suffered from chronic migraines though thy aren't chronic anymore)

three years out and my information is old..I just got an update last night from our local support group..(so glad I went)

Some patients won't need bariatric vitamins. Can get them by food or OTC. They are now going by blood lab work. If you are deficient they prescribe bariatric vitamins...So much has changed from my surgeon's office. I'm glad I reconnected.

For vsg, I was told to take a multi daily...either on Bariatric specific or double the dOse of regular OTC. I also take B12. The doctor will do blood work at 6 months and adjust as necessary. Nothing else special for Bariatric patients.

I personally would not do juice+ due to the cost. Lord knows I've spent a fortune over the years trying every magic potion. I am open to alternative treatment and natural supplements, but am very selective and have realistic expectations of expected results.

I take a standard multivitamin (always have) but since WLS, have added in an Iron supplement and a calcium/vit D supplement. I also make sure to drink a glass of orange juice a couple times a week to boost potassium - I hate bananas. Contrary to popular belief, your body doesn't automatically get rid of all excess vitamins and exceeding limits can lead to other more serious health problems. Always discuss options with your drs.
