We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Friday - imastar2 (Derrick)
Today's Topic: Get Ready Day
So, I googled, and today is Get Ready Day. (Started in 2006.) I'm going to take some creative license with it and strictly focus on health/weight loss.
What do you need to do/can you do/are you willing to do today or this week to set yourself up for success as it relates to your health and weight loss goals? Consider picking something small.
Bonus Question: Do you have working flashlights at the ready in case of power outages? (Continuing the theme of being "ready.)

I'm going to do two small things. Headed to grocery later today and I'm going to think through meal planning more thoroughly than usual. Second thing is, I need to set up a dedicated space to do floor exercises to work on my hip issue. Along with that will be finding the Pilates DVDs from yester year and beginning to do those.
Bonus Question: I used to have a flashlight stashed in every room, and I'd check batteries periodically. DH has a bad habit of grabbing these and not returning them. I'm going to round them up.0 -
I am not planning to do anything different than I am already doing. Seems to be working for me right now.
What can I do? Stay the course with a long range view.
Today I made Italian style turkey meatballs 2 points each and yummy. I will have these as lunches during the week with a small salad. I like to plan meals in advance so I am not sabotaged looking for something to eat and eating meals that won’t satisfy me.
Bonus question: yes, we always have a flashlight ready as well as the ones on our cell phones fully charged.0 -
Get Ready Day is very appropriate! Tomorrow is the first day of bible study, and there was lots of getting ready going on today!
Re. health and weight loss ...
What do you need to do/can you do/are you willing to do today or this week to set yourself up for success as it relates to your health and weight loss goals? Consider picking something small. I need to make time to meal plan. This has been crowded out by the busyness of prepping for bible study, my mom's bday, and our upcoming vacation. At the least, I need make a list of healthy choices in the house that don't require much prep (1 SP egg sandwich, 2 SP cheese & tomato on toast, 2 SP chili dog, scrambled eggs, ...). I also need to decide what to do with the chicken I bought yesterday, you said pick something small 🤷
Bonus Question: Do you have working flashlights at the ready in case of power outages? Nope, but I'm guessing DH does 🤣
EDITED TO ADD:. I answered before reading others answers so I'd think it thru for myself. Apparently great minds think alike 😆0 -
I try to plan out our dinners a day or two in advance. Usually, same as last week.
Have a few around. 2 in the bedroom, and the rest in our living/TV, computer room. As small as out house I can "furniture surf" in the dark, if necessary.0 -
I need a menu update. I’m wearing out on salads for dinner every night. Without dinner out to break it up it seems like 6 months is as far as I can go in this rut.
I need a couple of on plan alternative meals that have nothing to do with salad.
Bonus: I have one of those rechargeable flashlights that’s always plugged in the dining room. After my phone dies I can go to the rechargeable to look in the junk drawer for the real flashlight and batteries.0 -

I posted a chicken stroganoff recipe in the sept 7 LTL thread that's amazing! Will also share a new favorite soon, french onion chicken (1 💜 SP total for the recipe that serves 4).0 -
Overall I think things have been going pretty well. Not perfect, for sure, but not bad either. As Frank said, it'll be important for me to stick to my plan!
The Jewish High Holidays start on Friday night. That means two days of Rosh Hashanah are coming. From a food/exercise perspective, that means four "festive" meals (Friday night, Saturday lunch, Saturday dinner, Sunday lunch), and no exercise. As I've been trying to do, I'm going to be somewhat limited in my eating to the extent possible.
How will I get ready and set myself up for success? That's a great question. First, of course, is having a plan.
But there's a second piece that I think is also important, and is particularly relevant to Jews at this time of year: I will forgive myself for being imperfect. At this time of year, we are supposed to be particularly introspective and try to figure out key issues to work on in our personalities. We're also supposed to ask for forgiveness, etc. I don't want to get too deep into the theology. Nevertheless, there's a book I re-read at this time of year every year, and I always seem to get something new from it. This year, the message I'm extracting is to be a little easier on myself, and recognize that just because I'm not perfect doesn't mean I'm a "bad" person either. So, while I've always been hard on myself (and there is some value to that phenotype, since it allows me to be driven and focused), I've got to be careful to avoid the pathology that goes along with that phenotype.
Anyway, sorry for the rambling on this!
For the bonus question about charged flashlights: Yes, in fact this past year I bought a set of flashlights that you leave plugged into sockets all over the house. If there's a power outage, they automatically turn on so you can find them. They're not the brightest flashlights in the universe, but at least I know we'll have some charged ones around the house!0 -
@steve0mania , would you mind sharing the title of the book either here or privately? I believe you gave me a couple of great selections in the past. Either it was you or Shendler.
Thanks! And Happy Holidays.0 -
@MASSRUNNER_FRANK sure thing. It's "This is Real and You are Completely Unprepared."
https://www.amazon.com/This-Real-Completely-Unprepared-Transformation-dp-0316830208/dp/0316830208/ref=dp_ob_title_bk
In the spirit of full disclosure, it is focused on the Jewish High Holiday cycle.1 -
@steve0mania , thank you.2

Right now I'm pretty much in a rut and sticking to my food routine since January and surgeries etc; DW and I are in a state of being ready by having prepared meats in the freezer by freezing portions and buying frozen low sodium veggies to throw in the micro. This was pretty much with the blessing of my nutritionist. So not much new on the being ready front for us right now.
As far as being ready with flashlights etc; We have some emergency lights ready as well as a small Honda 2000 generator to run my bi/pap machine should we lose power which we have in the past.0
