We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.
Monday - crewahl (Charlie)
Tuesday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Wednesday - Al_Howard (Al)
Thursday - misterhub (Greg)
Friday - imastar2. (Derrick)
TODAY’S TOPIC: Exotic Foods
Something a bit fun today.
What is the most exotic/adventurous food you've ever eaten? Did you enjoy it? Would you do it again?

Hmm . . . I’m not one who's going to eat chocolate covered ants or live crickets. I’m not a character on Star Trek who's going to eat “gahk - served live”. Heck, in terms of slimy food I stop short of okra and/or lima beans.
So I guess my most memorable food was in Hilton Head. I had a deep-fried burger topped with fried oysters and pork belly. Heck, I’ll eat gahk if you put pork belly on top! It was really good. It was also two days worth of points by itself - but that’s what weekly points and activity points are for.
Would I do it again? Probably not, but simply because it was not worth the points. I’m sure I’ll eat something equally stupid before the end of 2021, though. 😉1 -
I'm not a particularly "exotic" eater, but I did have Mexican Caviar on a visit to Mexico City many years ago (I believe it was some sort of ant eggs, and it wasn't as gross as it would have seemed). I've had ostrich goulash in Prague, and that was really good.
I wouldn't eat any of these again as they're not kosher (I tried them all before we started keeping kosher).
We eat a fair amount of gefilte fish. I only mention this because when I was a kid, my grandmother (or maybe great-grandmother) used to buy it in a jar from Manischewitz. That was probably the grossest thing I ever remember eating! Either my tastes have changed, or the version we make now (not from a jar) is much better!1 -
Interesting topic Greg @misterhub. Growing up in the deep south in the late 40's, 50's and even as a young man we had a steady diet of wild game. Fried squirrel, squirrel and dumplings, same with wild rabbit. Fried doves, Venison cooked in a variety of ways. Please I hope this doesn't gross you out but I ate squirrel brains fried of course and also had many many times scrambled pork brains and eggs. This was my grandmother on my mom's side favorite.
Another gross thing that I tried only once was baked opossum very black and very greasy. I've eaten alligator, turtle soup, rattle snake once, shark, & eel Later on I ate my share of escargot baked in garlic butter and also some caviar on a rare occasion.
Lastly one beverage I tried one time in my friend's grandfather's watermelon patch was some homemade white lightening/moonshine. One sip of that stuff was enough no no no never again. You couldn't hold me down to get any of that in me again. One last item exotic to me was one tiny bite of a Habanero pepper. It literally put a blister on my lip so never again for that little rascal.
99% of the above I wouldn't eat any longer for a variety of reasons.
Well interesting topic and interesting even to myself taking a stroll down memory lane. 🤔🤯1 -
Ah, Derrick, you reminded me of something I’d blocked out. My father reached back into his Germanic heritage at one point and made head cheese. (No, that’s not head cheese as in “big boss”.) It was less disgusting than you might expect, but I’ve not felt any compulsion to make it myself.1

I grew up in Texas, and there was a period of time when it was a show of your "coolness" to eat Rocky Mountain Oysters, which I did on several occasions. If they are deep fried properly, they are not bad. Mostly, it's a mental thing for most people.
I don't eat a lot of meat these days, so I am unlikely to ever have them again.

I've had wild game: bear, venison, rabbit, squirrel, elk, turtle, alligator (in NOLA).
Head cheese was a speciality if my polish gma. Once she died I never ate it again.
She also made china, duck soup, made with the ducks blood. The flavor is good but it's a little grainy.
Oyster dressing was my other gmas speciality. I liked the flavor but was never wild about the texture of big ones. Although I like them fried.
As far as drinks, mezcal, grappa, and bloody brains (a shot of cherry vodka and baileys, it curdles).
I'd eat the wild game (except bear) and oysters.

Exotic? Wow hard to say. Like others I have eaten ostrich but it is tasty and tame to eat.
Oh I did eat a porcupine in Alaska once roasted over an open fire. Very gamey to be sure but lots of handy toothpicks around. teehee.
And of course washed down some Mongolian food with fermented mare's milk, the national drink.1 -
I ate "real" Kimchee, in a Korean's hooch once (never again).1

Hmm no Yak milk. I did love the local thick "hot sauce/'salsa'" condiment found in plastic water bottles in Madagascar called Satay. Everyone made it different and it had everything from hot peppers to tamarinds, perhaps mango or whatever added to the thick but still pourable mixture. It could be anything from sorta mildly spicy to very spicy and delicious.1

There was a snake dish in China that was interesting. I've had sweetbreads a couple times and really liked them.
Yes on good moonshine!!2
