@MadisonMolly2017 shared this self-reflection and wisdom regarding the power of how we choose to think of ourselves...
So I think I’d the Identity of someone who maintains effortlessly...
I think of friends I know who are normal weight, active, make healthy food choices...and food is not a “pull” on them.
So, Inwas walking down the sidewalk to do a Starbucks pick up, and Really took a look in the store windows as I did so (usually haven’t in my life)
And the Identity comment popped into my head.
“I am a person who: stands tall & lean with a long confident stride.” And then a feeling came over me -and these friends- and I began to image what they would be doing/saying to themselves. Inhabiting or trying on their identity. They would have ordered differently- less sweet, smaller sizes.
So I then adopted that
“I am a person who orders small sizes & chooses the healthiest option, but prefers to eat at home with her own delicious meals”
That instead of:
I can’t eat out
Ok you can have a “treat” once a day
Oh well at least it was a grande not a venti
No bargaining
No fighting my old habits & family of origins modeled eating..
A NEW identity -
eats when hungry, wouldn’t think if it otherwise
Would never overeat, feels awful
Looks in store windows at svelte self- happy confident
Uses her energy to pursue interests & help others - not fill time eating out
Handles emotions is ways that work - wouldn’t think of eating to squelch them
Etc.
Then I realized before I’d called it a new mindset, but your Identity is embedded, it’s who you are... deeper. And it’s no longer a willpower thing
Hope this help,

@RangerrickL @MadisonMolly2017 Thanks for re-posting and sharing.
Found my hardcover copy of Atomic Habits outside my front door this morning (must have been delivered last night). Now to read.....6 -
Good day today. Got a bunch of admin sorted while laundry was being done and a hiit session plus morning yoga. Lunch with my man (our schedules have not been coinciding so that was really nice) before coaching kids. Supper with my friends because he caught too much fish yesterday! It was delicious and all fitted in my calorie budget.7

20th January:
3 x Yes.
Exercise: Yes, walked for 50 minutes, some of it quite slowly because I took my man shoe shopping and he's not a brisk walker (borrowing vocabulary from @Dory_42)
Calories: Bang on the nose, without using exercise calories!
Tracking: Yes, logged everything.
A good day. Made a start on my Tax form, didn't loose my patience once with my partner.
Thinking about @MadisonMolly2017's new identity.8 -
Exercise yes 10 min quigong, 20 min yoga, 50 min early morning walk

As far a new identity I like the 90 degree shift in approach very much which is written. I am one who quite easily gets stuck in a "rut" or "routine" and have to sometimes push to either challenge myself to improve or renew the freshness of things. I honestly have never had trouble identifying as better and with the advent of so much better media and video truth be told sometimes my self opinion is a lot inflated.... I can remember snow skiing down blues and in my head I was whooshing like an expert when in reality I saw video and who is that beginner practically snowplowing down the hill....
Just rambling.. Happy Hump day to ALL and may the UAC force be with you.5 -

Exercise: yes, bike ride 20 minutes, cardio 40+ minutes
Calories: yes
Tracking: yes
Pass days used: 1/3
Short bike ride today – it was very windy – just down to the shops. But I did ride back uphill into the wind with shopping in the saddlebags! (I got wet too)
My mum came to lunch today and we had a zoom with my daughter, son and daughter-in-law. Mum hasn't seen any of them since September just before the restrictions were increased so it was good to catch up. All my grandchildren were at school so there were no distractions. We can have another call when they are home.
I shall have to think about the identity question. I have done this in the past - made a conscious decision to re-frame my thoughts. But at 70 years I have some more changes to make.

I've picked up Atomic Habits again and this identity aspect is one that stood out to me. In the last few months, one area I think I've made a shift is beginning to see myself as an athlete. Someone who trains for events and is trying to improve their performance and endurance. Before I more saw fitness, as means to an end, a way to lose weight or to be able to have more calories (okay, I still do this sometimes). Even when I enjoyed fitness activities before, it wasn't part of my identity.

My turning point came when I started thinking about my decisions as neither good nor bad but simply choices. No guilt or regret, merely consequences of my actions, which could easily be reversed by making different choices.10 -
