We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Today's Topic: Vacationing

What’s your plan when traveling on vacation? Is it:

- By gosh, I’m gonna stay on plan or else!
- Hey, let’s be reasonable here . . .
- Whoopee! It’s a license to ignore my plan!

And depending on your approach, how do you generally support that? What preparations do you make? What decisions do you have to make?

This is top of mind for me, since I’m dealing with it this week - staying in a timeshare in the White Mountains.

I’ve done all three at different points. I’ve found #1 doesn’t work for me, since if I don’t enjoy things that are specific to where I’m staying, I tend to lose weight but “revenge eat” in rebound when I get home. #3 is a lot of fun, but while it seems easier and easier to put ten pounds on a cruise, it’s also harder and harder to take it off than it used to be.

That leaves me with “let’s be reasonable” - not always my greatest strength around food. I try to control what I can, but still enjoy. I’m not gonna make sure I’m back in our unit for every meal just to stay on plan. I have my default two point breakfast in the unit, try for a frugal lunch (Subways?) when out, and then a flexible but reasonable dinner.

Last night that meant a sampler at a local brewery (Copper Pig), their special burger, and chips. No dessert, and no evening snacking other than carrots. Still, that evening meal was about 140% of my daily points allotment.

So I’ll do what I can, but I am going to hit breweries I haven’t tried every day. I’ll try to make reasonable but satisfying choices. Beyond that? Que sera, sera . . .

    😊

I tend the "be reasonable" option. The main thing I work to avoid is excess. I try to maintain reasonable portion size, regardless what I eat. I also try to limit grazing.

I go for reasonable. The first thing I did was to stop tracking on vacation. I tried it. Maybe twice. But it was a drag on vacation. I found it pretty easy at home. But tracking just didn’t travel well.

So I switched my vacation strategy to CORE.
Well, sort of. Because I didn’t really track my steps off the CORE list. I just tried to keep them reasonable.

But the big vacation difference for me was activity. Walking a lot. Golf (no cart). Biking. Even mountain biking. Vacations became a lot more fun.

We've got 2 fairly long distance trips coming up. One on the 4th week end for about 10-11 hours to Little Rock Ar and another one about 13-14 hours to Kansas City, Mo. Milkshake breakfast, milkshake lunch DW and I Allie a dinner with just non starchy vegetables. 👍🤞

I like to think that I take the "Hey, let’s be reasonable here" approach. Generally speaking, I try to eat a light-portion breakfast and lunch, but will allow for a bit more "indulgence" for dinner, especially if there is a kosher food option that I don't usually get at home. I am also usually a lot more "indulgent" when it comes to alcohol, but I figure it's a vacation, so that's ok.

I too try to be reasonable as I am not making my own food the same way as at home.
