Chose to take the day off from tracking. Was a very nice day with my daughter hosting a 4th of July get together in her new home. Lots went on - shuttling grandparents and other relative for her. A "pass" for today, but I am fine with that as it was with intent.
I need to go through the past few days posts. Things a hectic ATM, but I should catch up.5 -
4 July
Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? Yes. Crazy day, but I faithfully did my 30 minutes of Cubii at 10pm. Definitely a thanks to this group.
Did I stay within my calorie budget for the day? Yes. Fasted until 4pm, but saved enough calories to have a nice grilled dinner with my inlaws, including a piece of my FIL's birthday cake.
Did I keep track of everything I ate and drank? Yes. Even the little chunk of brown sugar that hopped out of the bowl while I was making brownies for family grill out. Hopefully reasonable estimates where I couldn't weigh things.5 -
Jul 4:
✔️ EXERCISE: 90 minutes walking around the lake tonight.
✔️ CALORIES: 1588/1600
✔️ TRACK: Yes.
PASSES USED: 1/3 (3Jul)
"The only difference between failure and success is your willingness to make mistakes, get back up, and keep moving forward." ~Unknown."
I did much better today and I also walked all the way around the lake. We'll head back home to Ohio tomorrow.
Holidays are often difficult to stay UNDER and to track.... but I try not to beat myself up about it if I take a Pass Day on a holiday. I gently remind myself that I didn't become overweight by over-eating on holidays. I became overweight by over-eating every OTHER day of the year!!!5 -
Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? YES (18 mile bike ride with hubby)

Back from The Netherlands! Saw my Mum, finally, after 17 months. She'll be 99 in September and still lives independently. Saw my sister, her daughter and two little boys, also my two best friends in The Netherlands. Had a great time, but calorie counting and recording was impossible! I didn't eat anything crazy, but the Dutch diet contains too many carbohydrates for me: bread and cheese especially. I did manage to walk most days though!
Going with my partner to an Alzheimer's Society lunch today, but after that I can get back to 'normal' and UAC.7 -

Sometimes I hit "done" instead of "post reply" and then wonder where it disappears...
My husband does this ALL THE TIME when he uses his phone to try to post to the message boards.. he rarely posts and when he does it's usually a novel that he loses when he hits that done button.. lol.. it drives him crazy.1 -
Did I exercise for at least 20 minutes? Yes - 84 minutes walking and 15 minutes yoga

Today's highlight was a gathering of our 4 children, their spouses and our grandchildren. It was not only the Fourth of July, Independence Day but also, a passing of family heirlooms and Christmas ornaments from Rose and I to our next generations.
There was lots of love, laughter and legacy.
My wife, Rose, had set up our living room and dining area as if she was running a flea market seller's tables.
Each child took turns choosing from among things ranging from modestly valuable to sentimental-but-valueless items. It started out on the serious and somewhat sad side but gradually brightened. From my point of view, it was delightful to see how many items the children actually wanted.
As we divest most of our accumulated stuff, I'm really glad that I got to be a living part of today's transition.
On the UAC side of things, I definitely violated @Mrs_Hoffer well articulated discussion theme of tracking.
I am a firm believer in tracking, but today was not a day of tracking calories. It was a day that ended in lots of fireworks and family togetherness.
We are grateful for today's blessings. I promise to get back to tracking on most days.

Happy Independence day to all Americans. The day was lovely until about 30 minutes ago when several neighbors started setting off illegal fireworks. Our cat is hiding in the bathroom behind the commode. I feel so bad for her. Normally if you scratch her head she's in heaven but at the moment she is all head down and ears back.3 -

Did I exercise at least 20 minutes? Yep. Solo ride of 14 miles in 80 minutes. No land speed record there, but man, I broke a sweat on a warm, humid (for us), morning. I got my "strength training" carrying my bike down the stairs and then back up when I got home. Going down the stairs is easy. Coming back up? Not so much. Hahahah! Also took the dog out for a couple of short walks.
Did I stay within calories? Yes, but needed the exercise calories to do so. Went way over on carbs however. Tomorrow is another day.
Did I track everything? Yes, yes I did.
Pass Days = 2/34 -
I am more or less back on MFP and UAC. Have skimmed all of the July posts, much impressed with everyone's posts and the level of support. Wow! I have to accompany my partner to an Alzheimer's society lunch today, Monday 5th, where I won't be able to track calories. I am hoping to meet other local people in my situation, maybe even make friends...
Back to 'normal', I hope, from 6th...5 -

@seilidhe - I love reading your bike reports, although it does make me greatly frustrated that your daughter was treated so rudely a few days ago. Sometimes I just don’t understand what goes through people’s heads.
@Chinkiri - how wonderful you were finally able to see everyone again. Your mom is 99 and still lives independently? That sounds like my kind of goal.
@RangerRickL - glad the passing down of heirlooms really was about reliving memories. In the long run, that’s what makes an heirloom valuable.
I had a mixed bag 4th. It was mostly fantastic because I pulled a float in our local parade, which apparently is the largest in Indiana. It lasts 2 hours and we had to be lined up an hour before start. A daughter and my husband rode with me in the truck and we laughed and laughed and laughed. And it was so fun whenever someone recognized us and started calling out to us. This was the first time we ever did something like this and it was a huge success.
So the mixed bag part I won’t go into, just to say that it resulted in pass day #2. Just when I thought I’d turned this ship back around.

@Chinkiri I'm so glad that you had such a wonderful time with your mum. It's wonderful that she's 99 and still living independently!! I've missed you!0
-
@lamlamsmakeover I like your biking ticker! It's a very cute little "tracker" to stay aware of how far along you are throughout the month!1
-
@RangerRickL it sounds like you had a WONDERFUL 4th of July with all of your kids and grandkids. And what a great idea Rose had to lay everything out like a flea market so that the kids could all choose what family items they wanted! Jim (my hubby) and I are just in the beginning stages of downsizing and looking to move to a smaller, one-level place in the next year or so.... so I will keep her wonderful idea in my mind for when WE get to that point!0
-
@LazyBlondeChef I'm SO sorry for your poor cat! Although I love a good fireworks show, I just don't understand why people can't be more conscientious of other people - whether with loud fireworks or loud music, etc. Especially when they are illegal!!! Ugh.1
-
@biketheworld your "mixed bag" kind of day is just a blip. Just one day. No worries. You're doing a terrific job of "turning the ship around" and today was just a small blip in the monthly radar!!! YOU'VE GOT THIS!!! I'm back at it again tomorrow too.0

I completely forgot about the ice cream and small piece of chocolate cake that I had as an afternoon snack Today (July 4). So when I came back and added those two items into my food diary..... of course it put me over! I did walk around the lake, but my own personal policy is that I don't count my exercise calories..... thus I am now at 2 passes for the month of July3 -
Another pass day for me. Not too bad overall but need to get 100% back on track.4

The Importance of Tracking…..
If you don't measure or track something, you can’t improve it.
Because, if you don't measure something, and know the results, you can’t possibly get better at it. For example, it’s very difficult to lose weight without stepping on a scale once in a while to measure your results – if you don’t, you have no idea if you are succeeding or not.
Or, if you're only using the scale to measure weight loss, and not taking any body measurements, then you could easily get discouraged when you've only lost a couple of lbs one month. You may not have any idea that you've lost several inches instead!! (This really happened to ME! I always take new monthly measurements on the 1st of every month!)
One of the best ways to increase your chances for success with weight loss or improving your diet is to TRACK your food. This simply means recording everything you eat and drink throughout the day. Or, as we like to say in the UAC, every BLT (bite, lick, and taste!)
And research agrees. Studies show that participants who track what they eat can lose up to TWICE as much as those who do not track. That's a BIG difference in weight-loss achieved just by simply tracking your food!
3 reasons why you should track your food intake.- It shows you what's really going on. Did you know that on average, most of us UNDERESTIMATE our food intake by 40-60%!? That means we are taking in about 50% more calories than we think we are each day. That's BAD news for weight loss.
- Tracking can really open your eyes to the amount of food that you are not only eating but overeating. When you track (especially PRE-LOGGING), you'll be a little less likely to eat that extra dessert or indulge in an additional spoonful of peanut butter. You'll think twice before grabbing that extra snack or treat that you really don't need because you have an instant visual of what that looks like to your day. These once mindless additions to your day that you ate just out of habit, boredom, or stress, add up quick and can easily account for an additional 200-600 (or more!) calories per day. But don't despair….. you can also "plan" to have a snack or treat occasionally. You just have to work those extra calories into your daily plan so that you can still stay UNDER your calorie goal.
- Tracking also helps you to increase your consistency. If you want to lose weight, you need to create a consistent calorie deficit. This means we need to burn off more calories than we consume on a very consistent basis. We need to dial our nutrition in for the entire week, not just a day or two. This is one reason why it's so important to not sabotage your results on the weekends after a great week of eating and working out. This consistency is a valuable key for weight loss. If your calories end up where you want them to be one day, only to be too high the next day, it's going to be very hard to lose weight. Tracking will allow you to be consistent throughout the week and allow you to continually work towards your goals.
Tracking is one of the 3 "pillars" of the UAC. And you only cheat yourself when/if you don't track every single thing that goes into your mouth!
Happy Independence Day to those in the US! Stay safe! I'll be travelling to visit family in PA that we haven't seen since before COVID, so I'll only be able to get on via my phone while I'm away (thus, the early post). 🧨 🙋♀️
Soooooooo true, thanks for the reminder!0 - It shows you what's really going on. Did you know that on average, most of us UNDERESTIMATE our food intake by 40-60%!? That means we are taking in about 50% more calories than we think we are each day. That's BAD news for weight loss.
