I know some of you are like me and struggle to stay on program during vacations. Since I'm leaving on Wednesday for a short vacation I've been thinking about some strategies to not gain during that time like I did during my last one.
Here are some tips from WW:
https://www.weightwatchers.com/us/blog/health/tips-weight-loss-while-traveling
and if one still fails ... here are some tips to quickly lose:
https://www.livestrong.com/article/343076-how-to-lose-the-5-lbs-i-gained-in-a-week-from-vacation
For me I'll be eating at maintenance + active calories per Apple Watch, walking 7-8 miles per day, eating only two meals a day (brunch & dinner) and sharing more food (thus ordering less overall) with my partner which helps both of us. And the biggie ... having fewer cocktails than I typically would while vacationing.
What are your current strategies? What strategies do you think would be helpful in the future?7 -
Wait...the purpose of a vacation is not to eat and drink as much as possible?
I think it depends a lot on the type of vacation. All-Inclusives and Cruises are tough! Several years ago I went to a an all inclusive resort. I wore a pair of khakis on the plane, then planned to wear the same pair on the return flight 10 days later. COULD NOT GET THEM ON. Not just tight, but literally couldn't get them on.10 -

In my teens I had a boyfriend (normal weight in normal weight family) who absolutely hated the feeling of eating too much. I remember this because that was the opposite of my obese food-focused family. Where the lotto was “There’s always room for dessert!”
So, after 5 years 8 months, I’m one of those people who doesn’t like how I feel if I eat too much. So I don’t - even on vacation.
Also as a maintainer, I know whatever I eat that is extra will mean I need to diet & as you all know I HATE dieting & plan never to do it again.
Finally, it dawned on me a couple of years back, why would I make my precious body work harder than it needs to (ie processing extra foods/nutrients) OR why would I set up a plan that required later undereating (also not giving my body what it needs.)
#HealthFirst
Anyway. Took a while, but that’s where I ended up.
Food is not love, comfort, fun. It’s nutrients that get broken the down & used by our bodies.
This approach helped me greatly after being above a normal BMI (mostly in obese range) for 47 years.
Hardcore - yes
An idea for everyone - probably not
Works for me? YES
PS As I learned how to do this more easily over time & ate more
Nutritiously, I began to get the clearer hunger signals I’d always wished for… this makes it all much easier for me than before when I never really knew if I was hungry or not. And I just ate whatever looked good.
PPS it’s clear that Salt elevates my mouth hunger. I’d never heard of that before, but it’s absolutely the case for me.

well said Maddie. So, after 5 years 8 months, I’m one of those people who doesn’t like how I feel if I eat too much. So I don’t - even on vacation.
and even now when I ...start...to....go...off... the.... rails.... lately somewhere back in the deepest recesses of my bingybrain I remember this. The last 2 attempts by that devil failed. I just do not like how it feels. And I do not like how it effects my heart and health. period.

Of course I haven't been on a vacation in a long long time (like 2010 was the last one) but I do remember how it seemed like it was always there had to be a HUGE dinner every day. Breakfast and lunch were usually pretty easy but dinners. Not sure how I would cope with this now - maybe try to split entrees etc...

This is something that I had to accept: a vacation is not license to eat everything in sight. If I truly say I want a healthy lifestyle, that includes when I’m on vacation. When we went last April, I certainly wouldn’t say I stayed within calories every day or even managed to track everything. However, I did make good choices when we went out. I did have far fewer cocktails. And I did have a wonderful time, because really it’s about what you’re seeing, doing, and the people you’re with.9

Yes to all questions.
Pass days: 0
Calories to burn: 46,970. Yesterday: 47,740. I did lose some today, but not by much, so did walking only.
I'm happy that so far no pass on my 10k steps.
@Winner_in_Life I'll try it out again, the running/walking, I did it before but felt exhausted quickly, but this time I think my food choices are better in general and I do eat more than what I used to allow.
There was one time when I was dieting while being on vacation. I took the food scale with me and ate anything I liked but within my budget, and any food that MFP did not recognize, was not eaten. Only on the very last day I went to buy an ice-cream but something happened and I didn't do it anyway. So it was a perfect vacation on health wise.
Goodnight 💜💛.7 -

Vacations, holidays, days out, I do have a lot of these now that I’m retired. Many of the holidays are self-catering in part. The breaks in the motorhome for instance, I take my usual breakfast, cook some meals in the van, go easy with the alcohol.
We do have an all-inclusive holiday booked for late autumn (in Lanzarote fingers crossed) but the last two years we went I was so active (swimming and walking) and focused on making good choices that I haven’t gained weight at all (flying causes temporary bloating but it’s gone within a day or two).
When faced with buffet style meals I pile my plate with salad, veg, add small piece of fish or chicken. Dessert is fresh fruit with perhaps a small scoop of ice cream.
Treats are ice cream or beer or wine or chocolate ..... not and
After logging diligently in MFP you know what foods are nutritious and lower calorie and you know what to avoid. Also, holidays can be active and fun, swim in the sea/pool instead of lying there looking at it! Walk round those interesting places you will be going to.
You can do it.

I don't have anything to add to the vacation advice, as we have never been on vacation! There's always something more permanent to spend our hard-earned money on, like house renos. But maybe that's a good point - just as we have a financial budget, we also have a calorie budget, so even during vacations it is important to consider your options on how you "spend" your calorie budget!7 -
We rarely vacation per say - we tend to visit out of town family and they control the food since we’re in their homes, which makes it hard sometimes. I think the last actual vacation we went on was… 2011? Lol. We do the best we can when we travel, put I always assume they will be pass days so I don’t end up mad at myself if they’re not on plan. No need to add the stress of self hate onto the stress of visiting my in laws. Lol.

I reorganized our bedroom today so there’s a good enough space to do yoga on my side of the room. My intent is to do some type of relaxing yoga before bed. I’ve been too anxious, sore, and tired for too long, I’m hoping the stretching and relaxing helps.7 -
Our vacations are usually day trips what I do if I over indulge at one meal I adjust accordingly at the next meal. Most of our vacations are spent at home in the pool with a what’s the hurry mentality.
I tracked logged did spin cardio exercises and some yard work and I am tired early to bed tomorrow in my part of the world is Monday…. again7 -
Great topic today @LazyBlondeChef !!
And terrific insight for vacations @MadisonMolly2017 @biketheworld @lesdarts180 and @mshawski !!
On past vacations I haven't been dieting, so I can't really address that. But we have gone to visit our kids and grans in Arkansas while I was trying to eat healthier.... Lol. My DIL is good about messaging me before we arrive to ask what I want her to buy as far as food to have in the house for me! (She's such a sweetheart!). Plus, DH and I will go to the store when we get there and buy our own snacks. When we go there over Labor Day weekend, I'll be sure to buy plenty of freggies to have at the house!6 -

Restaurants and I don't really get along - from a gastrointestinal perspective 😬 - especially more so on vacation so it has not been a nutritional challenge for me historically.
I'd rather get an AirBnB and cook local food the majority of the time. But there are exceptions and I'll use Tokyo and Paris as examples...
Exception #1: I MUST at least visit McDonald's if I'm vacationing outside of North America because seeing the adapted menus is fun (there's rice served in Tokyo and a dedicated section for viennoiserie/pastries in Paris)
Exception #2: I'll indulge in "international foods" in other countries (Tokyo had the best naan bread at ANY AND EVERY Indian restaurant I visited, Paris had an interesting Caribbean restaurant)

In the old days, a vacation from work was an excuse to overeat.
Tracking is more difficult while traveling but thoughtful eating is always possible.

@bradkcrew ur msg made me seriously lol!!!We hve all been there. Ha ha. My last vaycay back in April was a tragedy.
