We’re speeding towards the end of 2021 and I thought it would be good to do 2 things:
- Say how long you’ve been a member of the UAC
- State the 1 or 2 best lessons you’ve learned since joining.
If you’re new to the UAC then either comment on someone else’s “best lesson” or state something you’re hoping to learn, or state something you learned before you joined UAC.6 -
I’ll start.
1. I joined in January 2021 so this is my 12th month.
2. Biggest lesson learned - don’t make any change or add any habit I’m not willing to do permanently. I’m done trying “never eat sugar again” or “drink lemon juice every morning for the rest of my life.” My weight is coming off slowly, but what I’m doing is SUSTAINABLE and that makes me happy.
3. The 2nd biggest lesson is “keep coming back.” There have been several times this year I was discouraged and nearly quit. My tracking is often sketchy and my posts are sometimes short and basic. But I’m still here, still plugging along, and best of all, those 30 pounds are still off (20 of those are UAC).10 -
7th Dec
* 45 min jog, quick boxing and skipping session & stretch.
*Meditation and journaling
* Under calories
* Tracked blt
* Monitored sugars and under
Great topic, I've been with UAC for 1 year and I have honestly learnt so much the stand out for me would have to be learning that restrictive quick fix diets don't work instead they hve the opposite effect which results in self sabatage. So slow and steady covering the 3 UAC rules wins the race!!! The other big lesson was discovering wat i liked doing instead of eating as i was turning to food out of boredom, stress and loneliness.. U guys helped me realise this! Xox

Exercise: Yes - dog walk 30 minutes and other walking
Calories under: Yes
Tracked all: Yes
I was first in UAC a year or 2 ago for a few months, but lost the momentum in tracking and fell away. I came back because I really needed to draw a line in the sand with losing some weight and fitting clothes the way I want. I have learned that I need to be patient, consistent, persistent, honest and kind to myself.8 -
Off topic - but I committed to post my avg weight in a spoiler this month to hold myself accountable and keep me focused on my goal of an avg weight of 195 by Christmas.Dec 2 - 197.4
Dec 4 - 196.8
Dec 7 - 196.39 -
I'll answer the daily prompt before the day gets away from me:
I too joined in January 2021, so this is my 12th month.
I've learned: 1. Plateaus happen even if you're doing everything right, you can't let them get you down and win. 2. Consistency is more important than quick progress, especially when it comes to maintaining once you hit goal (and the consistency needs to be life long).9 -
Great topic Diane @biketheworld !!
1. I joined the UAC in Oct 2020, so I've been here about 14 months.
2. Something I learned LAST Christmas was to RE-GIFT all of the candies, chocolates, peppermints and christmas cookies ASAP! Yup! I was re-gifting fast and furious last year and when I looked back at my Libra app (just now), it shows that I LOST 6.2 lbs last December!!!! The idea of re-gifting was a real eye-opener for me!
I've already started off the tradition again this year! Yesterday one of my massage client's hubby was purchasing massage gift certificates for her for a christmas surprise (how sweet!) and he gave ME a box of Chocolate Truffles as a THANK YOU!! Yikes!! I gladly indulged in two of them, after adding them to my food diary. Today, I brought the rest of them into work and gave them away with my christmas cards to my co-workers! #win-win - and my co-workers think that I'm a sweetheart!!!!
I know that chocolate is my nemesis.... I simply cannot eat just one! So I get rid of all incoming chocolate
QUICK!!!! before it derails me!8 -

You're doing very well Diane! Inching closer and closer!!3 -
Say how long you’ve been a member of the UAC
-The first month I joined was July.
State the 1 or 2 best lessons you’ve learned since joining.
-Accountability is helpful for my personality. Knowing I'm checking in somewhere curbs my behavior.
-Exercise isn't needed to lose weight but it's part of being a well rounded human, it feels good, and as you do lose weight it can become a lot more fun to see what your body is capable of.7 -

Maryanne, hope your injury is healed and glad to help out with the TDEE discussion.
Not sure when I joined. Sometime in 2020 I think. @Mrs_Hoffer I am exactly the same. I have learned that people just will always give food as gifts regardless if it's really appropriate. Just like when someone takes the time and effort to bring me a slice of cake at work because well they don't want me to miss it. I totally regift. or trash. It's a lot kinder to just accept graciously and then regift. imo. The thought was generous after all. hopefully. For instance my one neighbor is always buying too much in groceries and "dropping" them off at my door. It's seriously bizarre because sometimes she even asks me and I say no and she STILL drops them off. So then I just politely thank her and pretend the previous conversation never happened. LOL.
I am always learning things here. It's part of why I stay. I don't necessarily agree with everything all the time but I enjoy reading alternative viewpoints. Who knows. Maybe one of those might be something to keep in the vault for future use also.6 -

✅✅✅
Today's exercise was a 45 minute walk and a 30 minute upper body dumbbell routine (3 sets each rows, overhead press, bicep curls)
I first joined in May 2021, so this is my 8th month here.
I think the most important lesson I have learned here is...
...well, I've struggled getting this into the right words, so after a few restarts, I'm going to just type and hope this makes sense...
...the concept of "maintenance" outside of "I will hit my target weight and just remain there forever by eating my MFP allowance every day forever, bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha-haaaaa, I win, what shall I conquer next".
It's quite vague really, and having it finally explained to me in a way that I may have actually, finally understood that, really helped me to take all these various habits and approaches I had alternated through all of these years and learn to have them in my "maintenance toolbox" for use when I need to "do something" after I reach "maintenance". FYI - I have not yet reached maintenance. But I am in what I would have previously referred to as a "landing pattern" for maintenance. Back when I though maintenance was a destination you reached, and then stopped...or something. I guess I'm technically just touching down to refuel and then go on another health adventure. Now that I know this, I'm a lot more eager to get there and decide where I'm going next! ***SPOILER ALERT***There is always a possibility I am already there. It's up to me, really. But I would like to see if I can lose some more weight still.Hopefully that made some modicum of sense.5 -

3 yesses (forced stationary bike again)
1... I have returned to UAC I think I was a member about 3-4 years ago, I left due to a back injury which stopped me being able to exercise at all let alone daily (my back injury was either in 2017 or 18) .. if memory serves and I have just finally gotten back to the stage that the back is not a real issue, its still a bit annoying, but I have more days "on" than "off" now .. This is my first full month back.
2... lessons learned hmmmm .. I guess a good one is, if I have passed for the day on exercise its not a reason to also pass on logging and staying under budget for the day.
5 -
✅ - Exercise 20+ Minutes: 97 minutes, walking/dancing/flex/circuits
✅ - Calories within budget
✅ - Tracked everything
2️⃣ Pass Days left
1. Joined mid 2014. Started logging daily 6 Jan 2015. I was shocked at how off my portion control was.
2. Change one thing at a time. Potion size was my first change.
3. Consistency was the key for me. Weighing food; tracking CI/CO; balancing macros/micros; hydration; acceptance of the ups/downs of the scale; creating better habits over time. All these have helped me adopt a fit, healthy lifestyle, which in turn saw my weight regularise.
Maintenance is not a destination, it’s a way of life were one takes responsibility for the choices one makes, while accepting that these are not always the best choices. We are only human. Cut yourself some slack when you stray, own it, and move on.6 -

Exercise ✅ [20 min yoga]4 -
Great opening post @biketheworld 🌟 My first month on MFP and on UAC was August 2021, and this is my fifth month.
Lessons learned:
Pre-logging is really helpful to me even though I love spontaneity. When I pre-track, I can always change the plan (but usually don’t need to). I can see into how I’ll do with my protein, fibre, sodium, and fats, and make adjustments in advance of hitting a problem patch. Thank you @SummerSkier 📊
Getting protein at every meal is key for me for so many reason. One is the satiety I feel when I have it throughout the day. It is getting easier to make good choices in this area as my cupboards are stocked with various tinned fish products, which I really enjoy — thank you @LazyBlondeChef 🐟🐠🐡6 -
Yes, yes and yes
Walking
I don’t actually know how long I have been with UAC but it has been a good while.
I think the best thing I have learned is that regardless of how much I believe I know about healthy living and fitness, I am always learning new and different things when I read the daily posts. I am able to incorporate these bits and pieces into my own personal health

Well my golden Winston is doing better needs a little assistance getting up but much better then yesterday a getting in the car back leg problem. Tomorrow we start some collagen just like mom!!
Tracked logged and did spin a good ride worked hard. To answer today’s question I started the UAC in Nov. 2019 and have been here since one of the best challenges out there thanks Teresa😊4 -
@Mrs_Hoffer great idea too bad I wasn’t in the office as much anymore.
@jamcnewman @biketheworld and @LazyBlondeChef so many insightful thoughts and ideas. There isn’t a day that we can’t all learn something from all of us in the UAC challenge we are such a diverse and supportive group. We all understand it’s ok to make a slip, to be frustrated with the scale and lack of progress as we define it but…we stick it out and make adjustments stay the course this holiday season. Best of luck and are you thinking about your 2022 goals? I am5 -

If you’re new to the UAC then either comment on someone else’s “best lesson” or state something you’re hoping to learn, or state something you learned before you joined UAC.
I joined UAC in October of 2018. Steady member until after reaching maintenance ... the first time ... (summer of 2020?) returned to get back to maintenance in late fall 2020(?) through March 2021. Then went MIA until returning to The Fold Nov 2021.
My Bestest Lessons Learned ... (the hard way)- Much as I championed and promoted the idea that UAC was supposed to be "discovering healthy and SUSTAINABLE lifestyle habits that fit YOUR reality and preferences during my initial most-of-two-years .... I hadn't ACTUALLY finished discovering and internalizing my own quite as thoroughly as I thought I had by the time I reached "my goal weight". (I am far better at focusing on supporting others - it's the Reference Librarian Bent in my personality)
- If I expect to actually GET to a SUSTAINABLE lifestyle routine, I will need to BOTH treat "maintenance status" as "just another day of meeting The UAC Big Three (with a different number as the "in goal ceiling) AND that I will have to take the time to put more Recipes and Meal-Groupings into my Food Log Arsenal ... adding back variety. (already started that by putting in my Applesauce Oatmeal recipe, plan to add Chia Chocolate Pudding and Viceless Riceless Pudding (made with couscous instead of rice), and experiment with the Air Fryer setting of our toaster oven,
- I have also discovered (the hard way) just how much a difference being plugged into this community makes. Both in "world is open times" and in "virtual is the only kind of connecting available-Covid times". I was sooooooo GLAD you were still around when I went looking at the end of Oct 2021!

I joined in September 2021. I learned that being in a accountability group is exactly what I needed. Having to check in daily has helped me be consistent with my diet and exercise. I also learn different things everyday just reading everyone's post.

@donna25trinity - “the stand out for me would have to be learning that restrictive quick fix diets don't work instead they hve the opposite effect which results in self sabatage. So slow and steady covering the 3 UAC rules wins the race!!!”
I remember hearing once that the diet industry makes billions of dollars selling us “quick fixes” and next to nothing showing us how to maintain. That was a bit of an eye opener for me.Mrs_Hoffer wrote: »2. Something I learned LAST Christmas was to RE-GIFT all of the candies, chocolates, peppermints and christmas cookies ASAP! Yup! @TerriRichardson112 and @WhatMeRunning - your comments on maintenance were spot on. That whole concept was new to me too. I never before thought about it as being something to learn and practice.

This my first month participating in this group and my third tour of duty on MFP.
What I’m learning here is to relax about all of this. I’ve had this distorted notion that one daily fail will undo all the hard work I’ve put in.
Oh and to not keep cinnamon rolls in the house.6 -
