🧠Do you have established habits or are you working on any habits that involve changing your mindset or thought patterns?
🧠Have you found that mindset work has been important in your health/wellness/fitness journey?
My approach in the past of “eat less, move more” was really just trying to stick a bandaid on symptoms rather than addressing the true source of my weight problem: my thoughts. I’m sure many of you are already familiar with the “thought cycle”:
I had thoughts>feelings>actions that were creating the result of weight gain but I was only going one step back and trying to alter the actions, which provided short-term results of weight loss, but this was never lasting, sustainable change so the cycle repeated as the result of unsustainable weight loss changed my thoughts and beliefs about my ability to change long-term. Now that I’m going to the source (thoughts & beliefs) I’m finding that I’m able to create new habits that in turn create steady weight loss results.
Examples of mindset shifts and habits I'm making:
🧠No longer looking to food or drink to alter my emotions and am learning to process uncomfortable feelings
🧠Not looking for a silver bullet diet/exercise plan to fix me but rather I am fixing my own thought distortions around food and my self-image and building healthy habits that reinforce that mindset shift
🧠Developing a daily meditation practice that helps me recalibrate my mindset each morning
🧠Making time to learn more about harnessing the power of my mind each day (podcasts & books)
This is an example of 'the obstacle becomes the way.' In Meditations, Marcus Aurelius says “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” My old mindset was that obstacle and changing my thought patterns has led to success - right now in the present moment, not just when I reach goals/milestones with weight loss - because my new mindset positively impacts ALL areas of my life.
Looking forward to hearing what you have to share on this topic!6 -

Yes to the above post. I am more successful when I have a mindset approach. It also involves thinking things in the positive. So instead of, 'I am not drinking alcohol at the party', it is more 'I am a person who is having other drinks at the party. I am a person who loves fruit and vegetables. I am a person who exercises daily. I am a person who meditates to address my emotional rollercoaster. I am a person who does not need the biscuit. I am more successful when "I am..." something, rather than "I am not..."6 -

Thank you for today’s opener. I am currently working on habits that involve changing mindset and thought patterns.
Recalibrating my mindset each morning and making time to learn more about harnessing the power of my mind each day through books, blogs and videos is what I’m doing.
I have taken classes on mindfulness and lately I have re-read my seminar notes often. (See Dec 24th 2021 UAC opener for free online Stress Management and Anger Management class info)
Not only has it been indispensable to my health and fitness journey, but as a Christian, it’s been integral to my faith journey as well.
I wake up early everyday and how I start my day and the consistency of my routines has a big impact. In my minds eye, I have an idea of how it should go. When it doesn’t I’m trying to be kind and patient with myself.
Being negative is easy and a well worn path. It takes courage and time for me to create mental pathways that’s kinder and gentler to myself. It’s easier said than done. But it’s worth working at.
When you wrote, “…but I was only going one step back and trying to alter the actions…” it made me think of “Root Before the Fruit” and this quote:
“When I sow a thought, I reap an action, when I sow an action I reap a habit, when I sow a habit I reap a character, when I sow a character, I reap a destiny.”
I agree mindset impacts every area of life. But I am going to test out the “obstacle is the way” concept. It makes so much sense. Thanks for sharing.6 -
Setting my intention early worked on Saturday and set the tone for my day. So I’m going for it again ✔️✔️✔️. If I miss the mark/ I’ll come back the next day and say so.
Logging food and drink is such a challenge. 🤦🏾♀️4 -

Very thoughtful opener @makattack220.
I’m over 70 and during my life I have had to adjust my mindset a few times. I have come through some difficult times – from childhood onwards – and am still learning to deal with stuff.
I would like to try meditation, I should ask my sister – she’s been a Buddhist for over 20 years – for help.

What a terrific post @makattack220 ! I turned 60 this year, and during my lifetime, I have also had to adjust my mindset quite a few times. I've learned over the years not to dwell on negativity - it doesn't do any good..... and it only brings ME down!
Whenever I begin to feel "out of sorts", I find that spending time in prayer and reading my Bible helps me to feel grounded again.4 -

I have many of the same thoughts others have stated I am 58 years young but I too have had to change how I look and think about things. I have decided that I will work on me I will help you get there also but I can not do it for you. You need to want to be healthy as much as I do perhaps even more. If I could go back in time I would do many things differently but I know one can’t go back but I can move forward.4 -

My mindset is really important to whether I am losing, maintaining, or gaining weight. The trick has been changing it when I have felt like I am just crawling to get by. Thus my episodes of 75+ pound weight loss and later regain. A year ago I made the choice to retire because I did not feel good and my mindset was ¨who wants to live longer anyway?¨ I am so glad not to be in the crawling to get by phase at the moment, but to be increasingly enjoying my new hobbies related to real food, fermented food, health, and gardening. I feel somewhat confident in my ability to lose weight, but still working on figuring out what will allow me to maintain for more than 4 years and how to more quickly get back in the growth mindset when I am not there.4 -

Love all the shares on the mindset/thoughts topic!
@jjjcat I love your use of "I am" statements. I use them in my meditation mantras, too. So empowering!
@stayFITTer sounds like we share a lot in common in our mindset approach. I like that you mention being kinder and gentler with yourself, too. One of the mantras I use in meditation is "I treat myself with lovingkindness and compassion." Thanks for sharing the root before fruit quote!
@lesdarts180 thank you for sharing💗 Thich Nhat Hanh is one of my favorite authors who opened my mind to the concept of mindfulness a few years ago. I'd recommend either the "The Art of Living" or "The Miracle of Mindfulness" if you're looking for a place to start. I also use the free Insight Timer app for meditation. There are hundreds of free guided meditations on the app and also courses on many topics.
@Mrs_Hoffer staying positive and knowing how to ground yourself sound essential to making those mindset adjustments and great point about this being an ongoing process in life!
@TerriRichardson112 thank you for sharing! Sounds like positive mindset is a theme😁🧠
@snowshoe072 I love how you stated: "I have decided that I will work on me I will help you get there also but I can not do it for you." This has been a tough lesson for me with my partner, personally, but I'm finding the more I focus on my own mindset/progress, the better the results are in my life and my relationships, too.
@ideas2 Thanks for sharing - mindset really has been key for me with my weight, too. Your hobbies sound fun! (I make kombucha and garden myself!)
Thanks everyone for engaging posts on the topic! I really enjoyed reading them.

My biggest mindset shift has been that I'm not a failure if I have a bad day. I'm someone who gets back on the horse and carries on the next day.
I used to get derailed easily. One bad day. Oh well I've failed might aswell make it a bad week. Nearly the end of the month - I'll start again next month. Etc etc. Or end up in a binge restrict cycle. But thinking "ok one bad day is not the end of the world I'll get back to it" has helped.6
