Hi everyone,
Happy "International Self-Care Day!" Real talk: I had a significant "lapse" (but not a "relapse" and NOT a "collapse") and I slipped up last week; so I am using this special, commemorative day to take better care of ME! Here are my stats:
SUNDAY weigh-in:
HW: 217.0 02/29/08 (Highest Weight) - 54 down as of 06/26/22
PW: 162.0 06/26/22 (Here we go again!)
PW: 163.0 07/03/22 (+1.0 from 06/26)
PW: 162.2 07/10/22 (+0.2 from 06/26)
PW: 161.6 07/17/22 (-0.4 from 06/26)
CW: 163.8 07/17/22 (+1.8 from 06/26)
The problem is that when I drink alcohol, I lose all inhibitions and end up overeating all the "wrong" things - things that are not good for me!
My self-care promise is to cut out all alcohol COMPLETELY, period! This week's experiment should show me what a BIG difference this will make in my wellness efforts.
Would you like to share in the celebration of this special day? Here is a link to get you started:

Like so many of us, here in Boston we are having quite the heat wave! I look forward to the humidity breaking and the temps going back down! Stay COOL out there everyone!
Thank you for this! We are in similar places and I do the exact same thing with alcohol!
Love your city. Was lucky enough to visit for the first time in April for the marathon. It was warmer than I expected then - but beautiful!

@Walela617 - My sons are both in Boston. My older son is living on his college campus and the younger one is living at my mother’s house while working at a summer internship downtown. My younger son rides a bicycle to work but doesn’t mind the heat as much as the older one does. My older son will probably never return to Virginia because of the summer heat and humidity! I hope it cools down soon. It’s more dangerous to people who aren’t acclimated to such heat! I put a small towel in the freezer to use after exercise. It’s such a relief! 😅
@pupowl - Well, it doesn’t look as though you did nothing with all those steps! I feel more drained of energy on such warm days, too. It’s rare for me to nap in the afternoon because it’s very difficult for me to fall asleep when it’s light outside but I nodded off while reading on my porch yesterday afternoon. Of course, I want to stay in bed all winter when it’s dark though —
I hope you can get some relief from your headaches. I suffered from migraines for about 40 years (age 15 until a few years ago) to varying degrees and bright hot days were especially painful because it was so hard to sleep until the headache passed. I think mine probably related to hormonal changes with my menstrual cycle. I learned a lot about managing them over the years but hormonal research seems to be an under-researched area overall. Since migraines affect about 1 in five women (& about 1 in 16 men), I hope it gets better!2 -
@cre804 - I hope your were able to schedule a massage appointment and you are starting to feel better. Good idea! When my husband is traveling, I make lots of plans to accomplish a long list of tasks; but, I find it takes me a few days to get used to the change and build momentum. I only make small strides in the end but any forward progress is better than nothing, I guess. I’m not sure if I should lower my expectations and cut back in my plans or celebrate the incremental progress. For now, I hope you can focus on feeling better and give yourself grace on the task list. Best wishes for a speedy recovery! ❤️🩹2

@ac204 - I’m sorry to hear about your broken water heater but I’m glad it was fixed. Were you able to catch it before experiencing a leak/ flooding? I hope so! 🤞It’s easy to get derailed under stress. Take care and let us know if there is a specific way we can support you. How are you feeling this week?2

Good work, @bearchested, and thanks for the water tips! I sometimes track my water in MFP, and sometimes I don’t, so I appreciated the reminder. I definitely focus on increasing my water intake when I track it.
@bassclef - Congratulations on your maintenance, too. If we don’t have a gain on weigh-in day, it’s a victory to me. You’re on the right track!2 -

The humidity just broke here in Michigan after it being 70%+ humidity for over a week. It was 90+ for almost a week straight and thick humidity. It feels like spring outside here now, is glorious!2 -

I keep thinking about your post and viewing calories as a checking account- shouldn’t spend what you don’t have and to be effective you need to know your balance. What a really great way to view things! Helpful and non-judgmental. I tend to be so hard on myself when I go off-plan. I’m sure others are the same. I’m going to use this metaphor going forward. Another reason why logging is so helpful! Thank you!5 -

Hi everyone, Thanks for the welcoming message!
I've been on and off food logging with MFP for over 10yrs but always used it on my own and new to the community forum. I'm hoping that by joining this group effort, that I'll be more accountable and consistent toward better eating and sleeping habits and that I'll meet some other awesome people with similar goals
I have a much easier time with getting in daily physical activity. I'm naturally drawn to it and find that I don't feel very well and don't sleep well if I'm not active daily. We do a lot of walking with our dog. I also enjoy cycling (hence the username) whenever I can and play hockey once a week with a pretty awesome group of women.
The past couple of years, I've been working some pretty long hours at a desk job and over the past year have been feeling burnt out from work, which has been contributing to my struggle with weight gain. This week my family and I are taking a much needed vacation together, so hoping that will be a good start. We're in the Mont Tremblant region of Quebec and there are so many fun options for fun activities....I'm a pretty happy camper right now.
Looking forward to this!

Thanks for the welcome message!
About me - @pedal__power I too have been on and off MFP for years. I just can't ever seem to stick with it. I log on and get depressed about how long it's been since I log on that I just reset my account each and every time. I lose interest because I haven't found the support/motivation to use this app and/or lose weight.
My biggest struggle is definitely finding the motivation to change my lifestyle and lose weight. I work from home (LOVE IT) but find myself not getting out much. I have a husband (married almost 18 years) and 2 kids ages 17 and 9. They're loving and wonderful, but I don't get the support/motivation I need from my husband. So, I turn to discussion boards and apps to try to get motivation and accountability, but so far no luck. I'm really hoping this group will help me out!
I've got a conference in Vegas in September and want to ensure I can get through it with ease. Long walks put a huge strain on my back (I had back surgery in 2021) and I know the extra weight I have contributes to that as well. I'm hoping I can incorporate daily walking in my lifestyle; most days I barely get to 1,000 steps - so I have ways to go. I need all the help, support and accountability I can get!3 -

Wow! Those guys can really step @izzyred9400. I'll need to get a pair of those slippers and practice my steps because it also looks like a fantastic core workout. Thanks for sharing the fun video!3

Motivational Monday Tuesday!
This is a day late but I'm sharing a quote that resonated with me. Feel free to share quotes or images that motivate you. I try to post something on "Motivational Monday" and I welcome fellow Shape Shifters to share your favorites whenever you feel --- motivated! or want to feel motivated! Because, as Buddha noted, “what you imagine, you create.”

@pedal__power Welcome! Impressive that you play ice hockey. My husband used to play a bit as my daughter was a competitive figure skater and we lived at the ice rink already!
I’m the same way with exercise, for me, it’s all about that snacking… and dessert, and wine, lol
@JanieD82 Welcome also! Hopefully you will continue to recover from your back surgery. I had surgery for a ruptured disc in 2005. Recovery felt slow at first and I still have to be careful, but walking really helped me.
I still can’t stop thinking about the “checking account” concept of calories. I was able to get outside for a run this morning and I thought- my physical activity is like having a second job, buys me some extras but I still have a budget.
Last night I ate the piece of cheesecake that had been in my fridge for 5 days. Since my internet was down I have no concept of how many calories- even if I guessed the portion size correctly. It’s like buying something that you know will be expensive without looking at the price tag! This is why I do so much better when I know portions and calories BEFORE I eat!
Anyway- I think this is a lightbulb moment for how to view my food.
In other good news- I’ve been trying to get back under 160 since late April, and I finally did it this morning!

I'm so glad to hear the post from the MFP category “Goal: Maintaining Weight” is serving as such a helpful guide for you. Your examples are great! Thanks for sharing them and congratulations for reaching your milestone! 👏👏👏
Sometimes when I know I’ll be exercising a lot the following day, I’ll “go into debt” by charging a 100-200 calories (e.g., snack or small overage) to the diary page for the next day, so I can close the day within my target. I start the following day with less “in the bank” but it helps me because I like to make sure my balance works out for the week while allowing a little flexibility within the 7-day period. I don’t go too far into calorie deficit “debt” on a given day, and I make sure the overage doesn’t keep spilling into the following day, because that would be unmanageable, but the weekly balance helps me. It’s like using a credit card but making sure I have enough money available to pay off my monthly balance by the time the bill arrives.
Do any of you fellow Shape Shifters have a mental trick that helps you balance your nutrition and exercise ‘budget’?2 -
Hi SS... You have a new member joining your team ...Please welcome @gofishs2

Hi all & welcome to all the new members of Shape Shifters @gofishs @pedal__power @JanieD82
@Motiv8tedMom I hope you get the motivation & encouragement with our group.
Nice to meet you & for sharing with us.
I'm glad you liked the video @PatriceFitnessPal I thought it was funny & it's me at 11.55 pm 🤣🤣 I liked your motivation post too.
As for mental tricks that work for me I try & have days when I only have snacks & maybe miss lunch & just have an evening meal. That way I can incorporate a few treats when I am under with my calorie count. This only works when I'm busy doing things,I'm terrible if I'm at home with not much to do.
If I'm in the right mind set then I'm totally on it with exercise & food.Sadly I am easily distracted by wine, chocolate etc.

My colleague who sits right next to me tested positive for COVID today...waiting to hear from HR if I need to stay home for the next five days.
My living room and den are filled with boxes...my new kitchen cabinets came in...just crazy how my house looks right now! LOL Again, in a few years I'll laugh about it...

@jessicakrall8 So sorry I missed last weigh-in.
I'm currently at 137 (up 3lbs) since last weigh-in, i believe 😣 - It does me no good to be stuck at home and off my routine.
Still working from home (until everyone's in the clear and negative for COVID). But we are all feeling better and can't wait to get back to our normal routines.
Steps Update * not really worth mentioning - I have NOT been walking:
7/21 - 3,246
7/22 - 4,268
7/23 - 6,210
7/24 - 5,311
7/25 - 4273

My steps @jessicakrall8
7/23 6,164
7/24 9,762
7/25 12,923
7/26 6,508
@Yukie_OP I know the feeling,it's easy to gain when you don't have chance to exercise as much as usual. You & I are similar weights up & down a pound or few 😉 I'm glad that you & your family are recovering well from Covid.
An update re my high blood pressure readings. My doctor didn't get in touch a week after I sent the readings.I had to telephone & they said they hadn't received the email, which I knew wasn't true ! Anyway, got a text saying I've been referred to have a 24 hour monitor as my systolic was higher than normal.Don't know how long I will have to wait the way things are at the moment.I feel alot calmer now & at least I am aware about it & sought advice.
Have a good day all,it's a lovely day here, not too hot just sunny & pleasant.Got a load of laundry drying on the line so I'm happy.
