Santa Sprint December 2022 Challenge

There's a statistic that's always going around that something like 25% of people will gain weight between Halloween and New Year's. It's Holiday season. We're busy with work and school and other activities. With all the stress and uncertainty it's easy to just say to heck with it and cave. And wake up on New Year's Day and looking in the mirror, unhappy with what extra weight we've gained. It happens to the best of us.

Last month we focused on the basics in an effort to avoid gaining during a hectic time of year. But many of us managed to hit our goals and not gain. Some of us even lost a few pounds, and/or gained insight into our own patterns when faced with pressure.

Planning ahead and keeping an eye on the basics are two of the most important focal points if we want to keep on the up and up in the face of all the junk and goodies rampant this time of year.

This month there's lots more treats around. And maybe some more stress. This month we are again going to focus on the low-carb basics. Yes, again. They really are so important to success. And keeping tabs on them reinforces good habits that will serve us through our weight loss journeys and beyond into Maintenance Land.

We are going hardcore and going to sprint for 31 days! We'll be Nose-to-the-grindstone, pre-planning, LC bada$$es!
x69c43gbdy8r.jpg

Some people choose to handle this time of year completely on-plan, supplementing low-carb recipes for all our bad-ol' favorites.

This may not be realistic for some. After all, there are many temptations in our faces this month. And a lot of celebrations. What I have done in the past was pick 1 or 2 events that were most important, enjoy them that day, and the next day was immediately back on track. No guilt, but no excuses. Every other time, I planned ahead. Eat before going to a carby event or bring plan-approved goodies. I actually lost weight in December of 2014. It can be done. Every other year I have easily maintained.

You can pick either strategy, but in this challenge monitoring our plan Basics and becoming a Master Planner are what makes the difference.

Consistency + Persistence + Time = Success

I really can't parrot that cliché formula enough. Because it's true.

Any low-carb plan is welcome. Just post your monthly goals and/or beginning weight, or if you are just planning to maintain through the month, or have NSVs to achieve, check-in daily or weekly with how well you did.

The Basics:
Planning ahead!!!
Staying under carbs
Staying under calories
Logging and measuring
Getting in exercise/movement if that's one of your goals
Keeping an eye on electrolyte levels
Getting enough water
Planning ahead!!! Oh, wait. I said that already? Yes, I frickin' did. Because this is the holidays! You must!

Share recipes, problems, thoughts.
So tie your sneakers tightly folks and prepare to own the Santa Sprint!
We are DETERMINED to maintain, and maybe even lose, this year.
We are DETERMINED to not let December run rough-shod over us, right?
We CAN do this.

DO THA THING!

With the availability of so many better low carb products these days, I am considering making ALL of my Xmas cookie gift low carb this year. And for some will even make them vegan for a family member.

I'll use today to think about my goals and post them tomorrow. Let's do the best we can 😍🤶

Here we go. Sprinting until Christmas Eve. And then from the day after Christmas to New Year's which is my birthday.

Gained a few pounds thanks to a med retaining water. And also just eating way too much of everything and not exercising as much mostly due to interruptions of kid schedules into my workout window.

So, goal, lose something this month and exercise as much as I can manage. Carbs less than 100g net

    SW: 178.1
    GW: something less :joy:

restarting, d4. Daily activities include tracking, eat within ranges and increase intentional movement. (scale is packed away)

In an effort to keep up my daily movement, I made a spreadsheet to post on my office door. I did something every day this week except yesterday (wake for a family friend). I had a fitness assessment with my trainer and made great gains in upper body strength over the past 10 weeks. My focus this month needs to be abs and legs.

    December Daily musts:
    Planks
20 min cardio (or more as able)
    2 extra glasses of water
2 extra trips up and down the stairs
    LOG ALL MY FOOD

I'm usually ok through 3pm then forget on the water and logging. I need to set an alarm on my phone before the end of each workday to remind me. Weekends this month I'll be decorating, baking and shopping so plenty to keep me busy.

@tishsmith101 ~ would be interested on how your low carb baking goes! Agree, there are soooo many low carb options now. People may not even realize yours are tweaked...

personally, i get in ruts and then get bored, then quit - so I am trying to explore new2me and seasonal foods. I find it easier emotionally if I 'add new2me' foods than 'quit eating' all my old favs. It's a jedi mind trick methinks...

Carb pushers - honestly, I hardly want to discuss (justify or defend) going low carb. People react like it's a freakazoid thing... I am hoping it helps improve my health...

This is day whatever? near a week I think for tracking, eating in ranges and adding intentional movements.

thinking will bring this easy peasy lo-carb friendly veggie tray to gatherings

@LifeChangz that wreath is so pretty- no one will think about it being low carb. I’ve been stressed from work the last few weeks. I had 4 interviews and didn’t get the job, then started a transition to a new project that is messy and over budget. So lots to keep me busy while affecting my sleep. I hope to get back on track and feel better about things soon but have acknowledged I’m stress eating and need to give myself some grace.

My focus for the month are those basics @baconslave preaches, because it works. Keep the carbs in check, stay in a calorie deficit more often than not and don’t bring the temptations into the house.

starting week 2 lo-carb eating/tracking & carving time for some intentional movement

good plan @taylok23 ~ sorry about the job - i've had sleep full of related dreams when things get super stressful... i like to take mini-emotional bubblebaths - a min or 2 to destress with things like deep breathing, daydreaming vacation or thinking of happy moments. 1 of mine is playing in waves with furbabies on a hot summer day...

when it comes to food, tracking, and our routines - sometimes it boils down to making a good choice from the things in front of us. We don't stop eating because things are stressful. We still sleep, brush our hair, our teeth, and for sure we get dressed and wear clothes!!! LOL so I try to keep eating well to nourish my body in that category.... it helps keep me eating for 'nourish my body with food I also enjoy' approach instead of life/job and **&*(** was so great/tough that I deserve to eat cake!!! (aka eat for non-food, emotional reasons. I had so many emotional reasons, it gets so hard to reign eating back to normal quantities for my body.... and I struggle all the time with my brain that conjures up a gazillion reasons to eat for non-food reasons. ok... /end rambletude (grins)

So far I'm about 50/50 on completing my daily musts. I did do 45 spinning on Saturday, felt great to get back into that. Yesterday was strength class with my trainer. She issued a core challenge to all her clients. Giving it a go with sit ups, crunches, leg raises and planks increasing slightly every day. Crazy, I know LOL

Bought all my baking supplies so now the madness really begins 😆🎄

I'm here. Last weekend was my youngest daughter's 14th bday and she wanted donuts and that's one thing I cannot resist. But I've been doing well since Monday, and getting my workouts in. Just chugging along. I think I was supposed to weigh today. But I forgot so I'll try to remember that tomorrow. I don't expect any positive movement being the time of month it is and the donuts I had on Saturday. But I'm on the right path. No more birthdays or interruptions until Christmas Eve.

Water's been much better this week. Thinking about adding a stair stick count to a corner on my white board so I can track it for real instead of trying to remember lol. Planks are happening but still struggling with logging my food. I start great each day but then drift away right before or after lunch. Need to get back to prelogging each day and sticking to it.

I’m still here but struggled last week. I got disgusted and decided enough is enough. I ordered some new equipment for my husband and I to try for improving strength and may cut back a bit on my cardio. Now to focus on food. I’m going to cut back on carbs because I’d given myself some freedom because of weight lifting but it has just gotten out of hand. Trying to get hubs on board too so I’ll be more planful of dinners to help get us both on track. I’ll also be going back to some intermittent fasting to see if that helps. Hope everyone is hanging in there this month!

i feel like a thread killer, lol

anyone else pretty much doing this right now? bet this forum will be busy come new years!

i don't know about other people - most of my family & friends are treating sweets right now - and I would agree - what we eat should be fun & enjoyable.

found a little snack sized food tree I think is adorable - string cheese rounds for the snow. there are frozen veggie blends with roasted corn & peppers which is what I think they used here to decorate the green beans tree. her website has some adorable ideas.

@LifeChangz these ideas are too cute! I’m trying to do better this week. Fasting is going fine and I’m sticking mainly with proteins and vegetables. I need to get the proteins up to feel more satisfied but I’m hanging in there. I got my new strength equipment today so I’m excited to try it out tomorrow. I’ll begin 2 weeks of vacation after Friday so can’t wait to catch up on sleep! Hope everyone is sticking to plan and enjoying the season.

You're not a thread killer LOL. Everyone's just super busy this time of year and we tend not to make time for ourselves which includes posting. That being said, my goals have modified in the first two week and I'm just trying to hang in there with some activity and mindful eating. Ab challenge is still in play but I'm a few days behind. Keeping up with my protein but can feel a little carb creep.

    Ok, back to work!

I haven't posted in quite some time but do come in and read. I find it helpful. Eating way to many carbs the past couple weeks. Not too much concerned about weight, it is the darn blood sugar levels for me. I can't afford to take break unless I want to be on meds. (Which I don't). And it is carbs. Doesn't matter if candy, cookies... or grains, fruits and vegetables. Yesterday I thought I was good but went to a Mexican restaurant. What did I cheat on? - Rice, black beans, and Four tortilla. Wasn't alot but it all affects me. Just makes we want to try harder. Not ever giving up. :)

Ouch @Megan_smartiepants1970 ~ that's enough to knock ya off your feet! Hope it heals well & fast :)

i hear it regarding the holidays and busy!!! all eats into food time.... have been using/relying on pre-cut/washed and single serving convenience foods - easy to grab and go.

@offitgoes ~ it is so weird. mom was insulin dependant and there was a direct impact up when she ate carbs and of course it was all her fav.... especially pizza! and all the holiday treats. Mine has been triggered with meds - which is why I restarted a couple weeks ago - i never would have even tried this time of year except for that. I'd like to keep my feet. my eyeballs. the weird thing is.... my #s are not dropping like they usually would - because of the meds - and doc wants to increase more to counteract stuff - it just feels like a vicious cycle.

ok, more cute foods (because the parties I go to are like big time carb foods) ~ bringing something I can eat helps.... and tbh, most other people don't eat what I bring - i get to bring home the leftovers... (things like fresh green beans cooked with a little chicken broth, bacon crumbles and spices... yum.... a bowl of clementines even they ignore.... oh well (i do get it, i just can't this year) ;)

idea platter - to be modified for lo-carb

I’m still here and am trying valiantly to stick with the plan. I’ve done alright so far and am thinking through low carb options to take for Christmas dinner. Probably a 7 layer salad and veggie side. I checked back to the start of the month and am down a bit but I’d like to see more. I start my new strength training Monday for 12 weeks while slowing cardio so I hope I see some changes. Still doing 16/8 fasts so I’m feeling more in control this week.

I’m still here trying to make good choices. I’ve stuck with intermittent fasting and snacking has been reduced however I’ve put on a couple of pounds. I would imagine some of the carbs and drinks last week added to that was well as cutting back on my cardio. I’m trying to stick with my new strength program without a lot of cardio to see what difference it makes- could be a long 12 weeks! Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays in moderation.
