Today's Topic: Weight Loss Fatigue

Late because I missed last week due to work obligations. Early because I don't want to forget to do it this week. :wink:

I am having to admit that I am suffering from weight loss fatigue. I am tired of it all. I know this is a cyclical thing - that it will last only for a short period of time, then things will pick back up. This is exacerbated because I am traveling for work (Waltham, MA - Hello New Englanders!), and I am eating out most of the time.

So, when you are suffering from fatigue of this sort, how do you break out of it? Or, do you just let it run its course and come out the other side with a new view and renewed approach?

    I don’t know that I have any particular ideas to deal with weight loss fatigue. Right now, I’m in the “glow” stage after getting back to Lifetime. I think when I’ve been fatigued, it parallels making poorer decisions. Those decisions show up at the scale, and it’s not long before I’m “scared straight”.

    The fatigue definitely aids in making poorer choices. I took a new job in 2012 and started traveling a lot. Eating out, being out of routine and not wanting to figure out how to track all the different food/drink led me down the road to eventually losing all the progress I had made as a young(er) Goadie. Stress, jealousy also contribute in my world.

    As I start back down the WL road again, I am trying to figure out strategies to help against that slide and getting back on track quicker, so I quit re-digging the hole that I work so hard to fill.

    I went to college in Waltham and recently had a chance to visit. It hasn't changed all that much from when I was there...I was a little surprised, actually.

    I think the best way to fight against weight-loss fatigue is to fall back on (good) routines and habits. I used to hate having to figure out points for new foods, restaurants, etc. It just seemed like so much work sometimes, and the information you really need to do the calculations wasn't always available. It often made me want to throw my hands up into the air and quit making the effort.

    However, I found that one can get into good habits and routines, and that those were often "good-enough." For example, there was a time when I would simply choose a fish dish instead of a red meat dish, and get steamed veggies as a side, instead of hemming and hawing about point values, etc. This was definitely imperfect, since one can manage to put some real calories into a fish meal, but generally speaking, that was a better choice than a full-on meat meal.

    These days my meals are often very similar: 5 oz chicken (weighed on a scale), half a plate of steamed or roasted veggies, and 4 oz of a baked potato. Lunch is half of the dinner portion, minus the potato, plus some fruit. Breakfast is cereal and skim milk. I really don't put much mental energy into figuring out what to eat, so this is basically a routine now, similar to brushing my teeth (i.e., no thought required).

    Of course, I still struggle with the "additions," like after dinner snacks and alcohol. But at least the struggle is focused, rather than taking place at each and every meal!

    I’m not so sure that happens to me. I get the heck with it here and there and get the pizza or chocolate cake. But tomorrow morning I’m having oatmeal as usual.

    And not being a glass half full guy it’s kinda strange I’ve gotten to this but if I get tired with what I’m eating I start looking for something new that’s still plan friendly I’m still pretty surprised at what and how much I can eat and maintain all this time.

    I know I definitely have weight loss fatigue from time to time. It's also definitely a mind set on my part. I've been on a sebatical for some time from tracking kcals. Currently as of last week I'm writing down everything I eat but not the portions and sending it to my psychotherapist for accountability purposes on a daily basis.

    This does make me think about my choices however the desire for foods that aren't the best vice are still with me. I will continue to work on it but it takes concentration on each meal and I know the rest with take care of itself.
