It's feeling like a struggle for every 10th of a pound. I'm aiming to get into the 120's by my annual check-up in October, which I had considered a pretty easy goal. Now, I'm beginning to wonder if I can do it. And, I'm at a loss as to how to go about it. I read a scientific study (based on the 30 year nurses study) that seemed to show that low carb diets result in shorter life spans. Sarah, have you read about anything like that? Of course, the study didn't advocate to eat sugar or very refined carbs because of the known unhealthy insulin response from those, but the elimination of starchy carbs and higher protein was shown to be negative to health.

Lois, it sounds like the negative digestive response to your program has gotten better, (?) so maybe the adjustment is behind you and you'll feel better and continue with great results. Are you less hungry? I hope you'll stick with it a while longer to know for sure if it's going to work well for you.

Sarah, check in soon . . I've been thinking about the bug you had and hope you're feeling much better. I remember you asked about my sister. We went out to lunch Monday afternoon, and she is feeling much better. She hasn't been able to get out much, so I was happy to see her. She was able to eat pretty well, but she is very frail, quite bent over, and having trouble with dizziness. She was holding on to me while walking. She's looking much older to me now, even though she just turned 76. She's had so many health problems in her life. <3 She did raise 6 children and took on a LOT throughout her life, was too unselfish. . never took enough care of herself. But, it was what she wanted and chose and she seems very happy in spite of her health issues. It was fun to see her, reminisce, and laugh.

Kelly, looking forward to hearing about how your week is going.

Well, I suppose I should be happy that the scale stayed the same. I am finally feeling close to my normal self, but at the first of this weigh-in week, that was not the case.

At the moment, I am pretty shook up. I went out to buy some groceries and had to go to two different supermarkets and still did not get a lot of items on my list. I have no idea why pretty common items are not available. At the last store, the person in the fish market spoke not one word of English, so it was a difficult to get the type of and quantity of fish I needed. So on the way home, I was frustrated and weary and when folks going straight blocked a turn lane, I tried to edge by rather than sit through another couple of lights. As I did so, I barely scrapped a vehicle to my right. I couldn't stop there as traffic was terrible, so I I just made the left I intended to make and stopped. It was within sight of whoever was in that vehicle. But they did not also turn in and a van that was turning in, honked at me to move. So I did a quick u-turn, went back to where it happened and asked a man who was sitting in his car in a parking space if he saw what happened and where the other vehicle went. He said, no he didn't. So I came home and there's no damage to my car. There was a wide, white scuff mark, which makes no sense since the vehicle was dark, but that dusted right off. But now I don't know quite what to do. My fear, of course, is that someone will try to claim damage that was not due to this incident. (And I know. I am projecting.) Anyway, I feel very pretty shaky, and I thought that the best thing I could do is do something to calm me down. So here I am to report in.

Sheesh, I'm glad that your sister is now able to get out and about. I so wish my sister was more mobile.

Lois, I hope that the food plan is working out better. And it's great that you are making good choices when an occasion calls for you to eat out. Just staying aware and making smart choices goes a long way, at least for me.

Sheesh, you asked about health and low-carbs. I don't have a lot of experience in the field of nutrition, although studied it in college and did a limited amount of work on NIH's clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of obesity a long time ago. But I've just always felt that a healthy diet needs to include the recommended amounts of carbs, protein, fat, etc. After all, fruits, vegetables, and grains contain carbs. And it seems that most diets that restrict carbs are high in protein and fat, which are not good for cardiovascular health.

Hubby just called up the stairs and needs me to do something, so I will be back to post my 7-day averages and goals for the next. Hope that others will also check in soon.

I believe this is water weight from high sodium foods - yesterday was my daughter's bday and since she hasn't been stateside for us to go to dinner in several years, I met up with my kids and we had Cafe Rio - similar to Chipotle - mexican food. Take out/delivery. Anyhow I ordered the Birria Beef salad. It was massive. I probably ate 1/4 of it and was stuffed! The beef was so tasty and spicy. I brought the rest home and hubby wrapped it in a tortilla and had himself a tasty burrito. I reported my mother's day dinner so I expected to either be even or a small reduction. So hoping to see a dip tomorrow (I normally don't weigh daily, but I might tomorrow). The plan is tough for me, I will admit. These 100 cal snacks/fuelings and only one good meal per day is a bit challenging. my brain can't seem to wrap around it either. And every 2 hours, I'm checking the clock to see if I'm close enough now... I feel so food obsessed now... Anyhow, I am going to give it at least through this amount of food I've purchased (about a month if not just under). Part of the challenge is I do still take 1 lyrica at night for the nerve pain so I'm not sure if that's what's driving my hunger or what. or maybe one of my bp (Losartan, Meteprolol, amlodipine). Once I've consumed all of my "fuelings" and my meal by 6 or 630 - I'm perfectly fine. I'm not hungry when I go to bed, but I have "doubled" a couple of my fuelings at a time but not for the duration of the day it that makes sense. We have 5 of the "fuelings" and 1 meal. So I might eat two of the "fuelings" but still stay within the 5. So I guess I'm not "starving" haha. And yes, I discovered I cannot have more than 2 of the "bars" in a day. So "cheerios" is the best I can describe, two shakes and a bar with Imodium every other night seems to have settled my system.

We have elderly neighbors who bought their home at the same time as we did 30 years ago. Sadly, she has MS and he was just recently diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in his lung. It is so progressed that he had declined chemo as an option, just wants to enjoy his remaining time (only a few months at this point). I feel for them. They've been married for over 60 years. Anyhow, my other neighbor that also moved in at the same time as us and I are checking in on them. I'm trying to share the positives of the hospice and how to get some home health care and what we spent for mom etc. It's just sad. They're so sweet. My heart is breaking for them.

Sheesh - What has your trainer said about your weight? Did she bring her calipers this week? I am going to bet that you will see a reduction in those areas. That and the tape measure.

Yesterday was not my day, so I didn't make it back here. Today will hopefully go better. I went to class this morning and have a little time before I have to leave for my 6-month dental check-up and cleaning.

Here are my 7-day averages for last week:

    Steps = 10,278
    Kcals burned = 1,694
    Stairs = 16 floors

I think my goals for the coming week should be to continue trying to get the recommended amount of protein, watch salt, and a biggie--cut back on butter. That last one is so hard for me. The other night we had salmon baked with butter and fresh dill, steamed broccoli with butter, salt and pepper, and rice made with chicken stock and guess what? Yep, butter. :# Not only is that a lot of calories added to what should be a healthy meal, but it's also extra fat. We just like our food seasoned well, and it's going to be hard to modify that. Salt is also an issue for me. Today I'm up a full pound, and I'm sure it's probably the salt in last night's fish tacos. We followed a new recipe and even salt-loving me found it a bit salty. And I think I should also focus on upping my daily calorie burn. I've noticed that some days, I walk about the same amount but burn more calories than on other days. I need to see if I can determine why and then duplicate that. Yesterday was one of those higher burn days, so I just hope it's not stress! Do not want to duplicate that.

Lois, I'm sorry to hear about your neighbors and I know they really appreciate having you close by. We bought our house 30 years ago, too, and the neighborhood has changed a lot, but there are still three or four households who were here when we moved in. Two of those households are our pool buddies. When we think about relocating we think about how many friends we have here from the neighborhood, volunteer work we do, our involvement in local and national politics, and people we have met through our work. I honestly think that if I really needed something, there's probably 50 people at least that I know I could call and they'd do their best to help. That's what makes it harder to consider moving to a less expensive and less congested place. Our family is very small and growing smaller, so those friends are family for us.

And mentioning the pool, I need to contact the HOA because we have not yet received pool passes and the pool opens next week (it's outdoor but heated). And I want to clean a bit before hubby gets back and I have to get to the dentist. He has decided to participate in another clinical trial for a combined flu/covid vaccine. I'm not all that happy about this one, but he really wants to do it. The covid vaccine trial he participated in was just to the check effectiveness and possible side effects of a vaccine he was taking anyway. In this one, you may get a combined shot or just one of the two. I told him to be sure his doc approves before he does this, but he's gone for an information interview despite my worries.

Hope to hear from Kelly and Katie soon. Have a nice Friday eve! :)

    I am here!
I know I keep saying this and then faulting at checking in. I even made reminders but then I dismiss those and then forget to check in.

Weight 172- I cannot seem to go below 170 to save my life. One interesting thing that I did realize though is that my scale show me a whole bunch of stats. According to those states, I have gained bone density and muscle mass. I guess the Crossfit is working just not in the aspect that I thought. I do really need to work on my calorie intake and what I am eating. With all the stress in my life is it truly the hardest aspect. I am still not divorced, got postponed again another month. Then he had the audacity to ask how we can improve our relationship and what he can do to help me forgive him. Overall, the MURPH (that competition I posted about) is on Memorial Day and I signed up. I am super excited and I got a new job!!! I am hoping that helps my mindset to see new people, experience more professional growth, and start a new adventure. I need something positive other than my cute children. Oh, for Mothers Day my sweet 5 year old made me a sign all about me. It was by far the cutest thing ever. I weight 14 lbs by the way to her LOL and if I only had one wish it would be to wish for chocolate. I love her so much. Anyways, I climbed the rope at the gym and was so happy but then getting down sucked because my hand hurt. I am still unable to do actual push ups or pullups. The pressure is the worst. I am hoping this new job will help me set new goals and achieve them.

Sheesh- you had a great question about carbs. When I asked my trainer about things like nutrition they tell me that nothing processed is good for you but in moderation are okay. I am not sure one can cut out carbs entirely. A well balanced diet of fruits, veggies, and grains is best I am told. I asked about Salt intake this last week because that seems to be the thing with Crossfitters. He informed me that unless you are working out extremely hard like them it is not needed for the average person. He also told me to up my protein because most people do not get enough protein in their diet. I hope that helps you.

Sarah- In regards to the car crash, I am not sure how they would contact you if they do not have any information other than potentially what your vehicle looks like. I would not worry too much about it to be honest. I know us women over think things though. I understand this to the fullest.

LastChance- I am so sorry to hear about your neighbors. May I ask if you are elderly? I forgot how old you are. I recall in my old neighborhood when everyone seemed to move out because of those things happening and then it became a rental grounds. I had to move then because no one cared to take care of things and I was not about that.

I hope everyone had a great Mother's Day. Even if you are not a mother you are! Because you help everyone with their children in ways without even know it. I am grateful for those communities of women.

So glad to hear from you, Katie. You have so many positive things going on in your life! :) Congratulations on the new job, and I'm happy to hear that your hand is healing welI. I see much better days ahead for you, so don't let the divorce delay get to you, too much. And yes, muscle weighs more than fat, so if you're building muscle and not gaining weight, that means you are losing fat. I'm sure your trainer is telling you that. It's great to have input from a trainer.

I did have to laugh when you asked Lois if she is elderly. She is not a youngster, but she's certainly not elderly and she's younger than either Sheesh or me. In fact, I'm the reigning old person by 2-1/2 months. Good thing is that only the outside ages.

Thanks for supportive words about my car worry. Hubby thinks I'm crazy to worry since he was able to dust off the mark on my car, and even though I stopped in full view, the person didn't bother to stop. The thing that feels worst to me today is that I realize that I no longer trust people like I used to.

Well, just stopped to log my lunch and now I need to go pot some plants we bought last week and that are looking a little worse for wear. :)

Just a quick jump back in. Sarah - I swear we are of the same mindset as we usually are posting at the same time. So sorry to read about a car scraping - I'm sure all is fine - so take a deep breath!!

Sheesh - I got cut off as I was replying to your original post and when I reduced the carbs and raised protein and fats, my triglycerides tripled!! So my doc and cardiologist friend both made me stop following that meal plan. The weight reduction wasn't worth the risk of a stroke - given my family history and blood pressure issues.

Katie - your MURPH should be a lot of fun. Hubby and I used to do the obstacle course races (it's been about 10 years since the last one and I was injured pretty bad - but they're so fun!! So do well and enjoy!! and yes, muscle does weigh more than fat so you must be reducing in that category and if you do measures, I'm sure you'll see it there.

Sarah - thanks for supporting me that I'm not "elderly". Haha. We bought this house when our youngest was starting in kindergarten and had just gotten relocated to AZ. I hate cleaning and packing and moving so I'm staying where I am. And like you, we have so many friends in the area that they are here whenever we would need them. We are giving thought to when hubby retires as we will have both kids living an hour away in three years when my daughter moves back. But it's our neighbors and close friends in the area that keep us here (plus we have an amazing backyard for parties and gatherings that we have not seen in any listings). I watch the listings in the east valley - just in case I see something "magical"..but we're here for now.

I did get on the scale again today and was down but still up .5 from last week. I'm going to keep my weight posting because that's what it was on that date.

    Check back later.

Sweet. I'm super happy about that. I was creeping up closer to that 150 mark and I'd rather not get back there again.

Sarah - Sorry to hear about your shake up with the car. Although I'm sure nothing will ever come from it, I can totally understand your anxiety about it. I would be the same way. Oh and I also love butter lol

Lois - That's tough news about your neighbours. Life can be so tough sometimes, especially with those kind of changes in your life.

Sheesh - Curious to know if your trainer measured you yet too?

Katie - It sounds like you have a lot of positives in your life right now and are working to stay focused on them. Great job!

Yah, Kelly. A full pound is great! :) Must be that pound I found! Most of the activity I've gotten in the past few days has been yardwork, which does not show up as steps, so it will be interesting to see how this type of activity affects my weight. The spending on plants, mulch, pots, fertilizer, potting soil, more plants, etc., just keeps happening. It's so hot and humid here in July and August that we don't spend much time outdoors, so I always question the effort and money we put in, but while we can, we're still doing it. I do hope that doing something different will have a positive effect on the scale, but I'm not counting on it. We went out to dinner with a small group of friends last night and both of us felt a little queasy when we woke up this morning. It passed pretty much by midmorning, but I'm not sure what walking will do to my tummy or my toe, which is still talking to me. However, onward I go, and I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend.

Celebrated my daughters bday with EVERYONE and I stayed on plan. Ordered a steak and broccoli - cut in half (will eat other half for lunch today). HOWEVER, they did order ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery, and I asked for a kids size. They got me a small and I swear the girl packed it like a medium as it was up against the dome lid. I ate most of the top portion. I was playing with the grandbaby and yeah - no excuse. Anyhow, my tummy hurt later in the night. I didn't eat all of my "fuelings" either. I did a quick check of my weight the morning of and the morning after and NO GAIN. No I'm not going to do it again, but I was happy and hoping for a negative report this week. Anyhow, told hubby to eat the rest and he did last night. I also made grilled tilapia and broccoli for dinner last night.

Well, sad news is that my neighbor did pass away quietly on Friday night. It's amazing how quickly cancer can take our loved ones. All of the kids and grandkids were there Friday and lots of cars Saturday and Sunday. I am texting with his wife and granddaughter. I'm hoping the granddaughter moves in with her versus her moving to the east valley with her granddaughter or her son. She's such a lovely neighbor.

Sarah, I found my burns would go way up when I was doing the gardening. I won't be planting the colorful flowers or veggies this year as Disneyland is taking our summer and winter flower budgets - haha. I spend more on the veggie plants and caring than I get in produce :)

Great job Kelly with your full pound reduction! Any tips other than lots of water? Hope all is going good in your life.

Lois, I'm so sorry about your neighbor. I hope his wife will be okay after such a long marriage. So often, when partners that close lose one, the other person goes soon. I hope she has lots of reasons to keep on with her children and grandchildren. And, good for you with the eating out challenges. It's very difficult, but I think you handled it really well by partaking, but small portions. Restaurants serve much too large portions for any person, let alone short women, lol! I always have to take some home.

Sarah, I did a lot of gardening over the weekend. Lordy . . it's exhausting. On Sunday I decided it wasn't fair that I wasn't getting any "workout" credit for the hard work I did Saturday, so I set my Apple Watch to a yoga workout for the kneeling, bending, pulling, digging, stretching, lol! If there's a workout for yard work or gardening, I couldn't find it. Kelly, maybe you know how to create one. We're planting fewer things these days, but I did order new cushions for my outdoor furniture. I'm really excited to get them. I hope your toe is better, and that you're feeling better at last.

Katie, I had to look up the MURPH to see what it is . . WOW. That's a tough workout. . Good for you! I can't wait to hear how you like doing it. And, your divorce will happen . . he can't delay forever. It's nice that he wants to improve your relationship . . that can still happen after the divorce. Congratulations on your new job! Things are really improving, and you can be proud you're making the choices to make things better for yourself.

I'm not sure I mentioned that my family will all be here soon. They're coming for hubby's Fathers Day and combined 70th birthday. Our son and his family will be here a week, but Oregon daughter is flying in for a long weekend . . her hubby and kiddos can't come. Also, SIL who lives here has a birthday while they're here, so we'll have lots to celebrate.

I pulled out my trainer's book so I can report the measurements correctly for you guys. Since last measurement, I went down .5 pounds of body fat (which came to .3% reduction on fat) and increased lean mass by .2 pounds. So, very small, but as my trainer tells me a lot, it's better to not lose lean mass and it's hard to do. The measurements were mostly reduced around my chest and back, but only tiny bit on my waist . . argh! I don't have heavy legs or hips, so my torso is my problem area.

I'll be back Wednesday to weigh in.
