    You're doing great @zichab

I have a friend who just bought a house in Amsterdam, NY. I wondered if that might be near you.

Yesterday was all rain, so my motivation took a nosedive. The sun is peaking out today so maybe I'll manage a walk. Depression is a life suck. I think I have to admit I'm depressed. The last couple of years have been a lot with Ry's health. As we try to come to terms with the CFS diagnosis, I'm struggling to find any light sunlight in a bleak future. I guess I'm writing that here b/c only a couple of people will see it but it still feels good to write it out. Having to readjust life again and again is hard.

    October Goals

    Mileage tracked: 57 / 75
Apple Challenge: Close my exercise ring 21 times. 5/ 21

I spent 2 hours at a Park nearby walking around and taking pictures of nature yesterday. I ended up with a few good fall color shots. If interested, you can see them on Instagram @deeder522

That's a lot of splitting and stacking @zichab but I know you 2 will benefit from it. We have a fireplace as well but it hasn't been cleaned in years so we don't use it. We've been talking about converting it over to gas instead of wood.

Amsterdam is about 3 hours south of me, but only 40 minutes from my home town, so I know it well. My husband's band director lived there and our "old clock" repair person lives there as well. We drive through it on NYS route 30 every time we visit my sister and often stop at Home Depot or Lowes on our way back. It is a very old, but beautiful NY small city.
When Dennis was on active duty, I had a friend who was diagnosed with CFS and it was so hard. In those days, it affected mostly women and was thought to be psychological, so they did not take it very seriously. At least we know more about it today.
I am so sorry to hear about your depression @Deeder522, but know that you are not alone as I have also struggled with it often in my life. It is one of the reasons I am here as Leslie's upbeat videos and positivity helped me so much. CFS is extremely debilitating and the struggle is so real that I would be surprised if you were not depressed. It is important to talk about it even if it is just to express the anger and frustration that you feel, as that is really what is at the root of the depression. Readjusting life over and over through no fault of our own produces a lot of fear and anger that gets turned inward. We can't yell at the disease or the sufferer so we take the frustration out on ourselves. Once we get into that loop, it is very hard to get out of it. If you want to talk more about it, just Private Message me. I know how much it helps to just get it out.

Yesterday's steps are totally the result of waking up two mornings in a row and seeing 39F and today 37F on the thermometer! I changed all the bedding over to the flannel sheets and heavy quilts and washed all the summer bedding for storage. I also washed all the throw blankets for the couches so we are all ready to hunker down with a fire, a blanket and a book when the snow flies! As a result, I spent most of yesterday on the stairs! Lots of steps!!! We are supposed to get back up to 66F by Friday, so we can get the rest of the wood split and stacked. But, it is still cold at night and the winter bedding makes a warm cocoon! I  fall and winter!

I hope today is a better day for you @deeder522. I am thinking of you so hang in there!

It's been a busy morning and we had a surprise thunderstorm as well. The storms lasted all of 15 minutes but it was enough to drench things and knock off loose leaves that hadn't fallen yet.

I'm doing a little better. It's hard with Ry's CFS because it doesn't give any rhyme or reason for him to have a bad. Yesterday, I had hoped for him to go to a client. We had been careful in the days before with activities. Nothing major, he didn't even leave the house but BAM...he was struggling to get from the bed to the living room. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I think the change in season affects him more than he thinks it does. The last 2 nights he had horrible night sweats. 😔

Stopping back in to say Ry & I went for a 1-mile walk this afternoon. The Sun came out and it warmed out. So nice to get a dose of Vitamin D.

My heart goes out to both of you. I know how unpredictable CFS is and that makes life so much harder. It could be the seasonal changes. Dennis is very affected by the time changes. He is sleeping until 9:00 AM right now, and I have to prod him to get things done or he sits on his iPad until noon! But come Nov. 5, when DST ends, he will be back to his 7:30 AM wake up time and be full of his usual energy to "get things done!" He has the same problem in the spring. It could also be the anticipation of seeing a client and being even slightly anxious about it. It could be so many things with CFS and that is the whole frustrating problem with it! Trying to "manage" it is like trying to manage the weather. You never really know what is going to happen no matter how well you "prepare." When did this start with him?

It's hard to pinpoint a starting event for the CFS. There are some symptoms he's had all his life. For the most part, he thought everyone was dealing with the same pains and issues so he just pushed through them b/c he thought that was what everyone did. So he never spoke about it. Probably our 1st clue was maybe 10 years ago, we spent a day with my BFF and her BF at the time out and about for the day. The next day Ry asked how I was able to just get up and deal with all the pain. I had to ask him what pain?
He started to deal with things when COVID-19 started and things shut down. That's when we began to tackle food sensitivities. 3 years in we know what little he can eat.
He takes supplements of Potassium, Vitamin D3, and digestive enzymes. I make a homemade hydration drink of filter water, pomegranate juice, and pink salt. I try to get Organic and grass-fed grass-finished whenever I can.

Part of his limited food portion is hindered by a large Anal fissure that will never truly heal b/c of its location. They offered surgery but the side effect was incontinence. So that's a no-go. So that keeps him on a low FODMAP diet. No Garlic, No onion. Limited amount of fiber.

He also has Erosive Osteoarthritis in his hands. This is an inflammatory-based arthritis. We've tried to do an anti-inflammatory diet but his body reacts oddly to some of those foods as well.

He recently saw an allergist who sent him for a bunch of labs. We'll be sent back for so same labs again but the allergist wants Ry to get a Tdapt booster and Pneumonia Vax 1st to see what changes in the labs.

It's a mess and has hindered our business. He can work when his body lets him work. To work a schedule 8-5/9-5 job is 100% not possible.

Oh my gosh he is really sick with this. I did a research project in my Sociology of Public Health graduate class in 1996 and at that time, the CDC was convinced it was a "disease of menopausal women" and basically dismissed it. One wonders how much farther we would be if they had taken the outbreak in Incline, NV seriously when the mass of cases were first reported to them in the mid 80's.
It is so sad that Ryan never knew people do not normally live with pain. I did not realize that food sensitivities were part of CFS though, so that is new to me. I did know that pain and uncontrollable fatigue were part of the array of symptoms because that is what affected my military friend. With all of these physical manifestations of the disease, no wonder work is hard to impossible for Ryan! It is kind of like Whack a Mole-one thing after another pops up. Is he also dealing with depression from all of this? It is so hard when men cannot work as it forms so much of their identity and sense of self worth.
Basically, you have to run the business and take care of him; no wonder you are depressed and no doubt worried and worn out as well. Can anyone else step in and help with the business? Probably not the face-to-face client part, but the back side to take some pressure off you? I hope the allergist can offer him some relief if nothing else, letting him know what the substance(s) is/are that causing his symptoms.

I have found that my Aldi shopping trips really increase my steps! But, I was able to walk through the Isle of Shame and not pick up a thing. All the pumpkins were gone so apparently, Halloween is over according to the stores and Christmas is on. There was not even a paper turkey in sight! I have no idea what has happened to Thanksgiving, but you would think it would be a grocery store's dream. My Halloween decorations are staying up until Nov 1 and then Thanksgiving turkeys and pilgrims will come out. Dec 1 is time enough for Christmas. I am such a scrooge! :grumble: On to stepping!

Another wet day here but at least I got better sleep last night.

Thanksgiving is such an afterthought for a holiday now. I was in a store a couple of weeks ago and had to stop and realized that the song they were playing in the store was "Hark the Herald Angles"....in mid-October. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Thanks for your words and kindness, @zichab. So much of what's going on with Ryan is stuff we've figured out ourselves. Food intolerance is usually something that is suggested for a lot of autoimmune issues. We figured it out for ourselves. I would say 90% of what has been figured out has been done by us rather than the medical community. For the most part, we just need a Dr who is willing to look at what we find, work with us, and say let's get a test for it. B/c of everything Ryan can't get any more COVID-19 boosters and he's skipping the flu vax this year as well. It took nearly a mind to get him to be ok with getting the boosters the Allergist is asking for. This means I have to be extra mindful since he's less protected and his immune system overreacts to the oddest things. Things that should help his inflammation, trigger it instead.
We've been working with a Chiropractor who works in Applied Kinesiology. We've made decent "progress" with him. He was quick to understand that Ryan is a difficult case and it has to be approached in a different more gentle manner. Your whack-a-mole statement from earlier is exactly what the Chiropractor said about a month ago to Ryan. " When you 1st walked in here and we started treatment, it was like playing whack-a-mole over your whole body". I must say I find the practice of Applied Kinesiology very interesting.

The last of the wood was split and piled up yesterday and all the fireplace inserts have been supplied with wood. It is supposed to turn cold and snow on Wednesday so we are READY! Because Dennis' knees are so bad (he needs them replaced but his cardiologist wants his heart in top shape first .. understandably!) that I have to do most of the wood carrying and that adds a lot of steps. Maintaining over 7,000 steps a day now will be tricky!
Medical MDs are helpless against autoimmune diseases as they do not fit the "symptom, test, diagnose" paradigm they are trained in. It is like diet. They get little to no training in it and many times, diet is at the root of autoimmune issues. It works in the opposite way too. Some doctors try very hard to make the diet-illness connection, but patients want a pill and other MDs call it "experimental."
My father-in-law was diagnosed with thrombosis heart disease in 1959 and he had a cardiologist who was on the "cutting edge" of the impacts of cholesterol, untreated high BP and high dietary sodium as indicators of poor outcomes for this disease. He was practically laughed out of the medical community and many patients just wanted a pill to stop the pain. My mother-in-law was willing to try anything and she made my father-in-law go on the "heart diet" the MD recommended (not easy in those days as no or low sodium food was rare-she made his bread and there were no nutrition labels to check cholesterol) and he lived for 11 more years with no heart attacks. Today, we know the effects of a poor diet on heart disease, but back then, no one took it seriously.
My sister and daughter-in-law both suffer with autoimmune diseases and like Ryan, the food connection is visible for them and it is not consistent either. For example, my sister found that keto helped her a lot, so she tossed out all her carbs and filled her kitchen with keto friendly foods and it worked great, for about 3 months. Then she began to notice new symptoms. So she went through elimination again and found that now it was gluten that was the issue. Then it was dyes etc etc etc. It changes all the time. She is now on no gluten, no yellow dyes at all, no pork, no night shade vegetables and there is still a culprit that is causing her sleep issues that she has not isolated. My daughter-in-law's story is similar. All of this they have discovered on their own as MDs do not listen after awhile and my sister has even had them drop her as a patient! One of them told her she was a "chronic complainer" and she told him, "No! I have a chronic disease that YOU do not care enough to diagnose!" Ryan is definitely not alone and his experience with conventional medicine is extremely common and it is not restricted to the US either! My daughter-in-law experiences the same thing in Europe. Honestly, I think this is why alternative medicine is rising in the esteem of so many people. If you do not fit the symptom, test, diagnose model of disease diagnosis, conventional medicine is useless, so we are seeking out alternatives for help.
Thanks for the tip on Applied Kinesiology! I am going to read up on it and suggest it to my sister as she will see anyone who offers her help ... and her muscles are her chief problem!

Sunday is my catch up day and today, I only have to catch up on reading so I am not sure where 7,000+ steps are going to come from! I do have to take some things to our garage attic. Maybe I could run up and down the stairs a few times? :noway: It is also cooling down mightily from 62 yesterday to a high of 42 today! It's a curl up with a blanket and read day!

A cooler day here and we're ending it with rain. Both myself and the child had a couple of cups of tea today. These whiplash changes in weather always get me on the edge of being sick. So I've had to take it easy today and force some rest. Hard to believe we're nearly finished with October. It's been nice to have you back to chat with @zichab

LOL well, I guess I really did not go up to the attic enough times! Meh, I got a lot done and sometimes, getting stuff done requires a lot of "seat time." I have November planned, have good start on my Christmas shopping and have cleaned out 1 basket of reading material that has been building up and watched Halloween movies with Dennis. At least it was not my lowest day of the month! :sunglasses:

We got the rain as well Deeder, only it was mixed with snow! Color me happy! Of course there was no accumulation, bit still ... snow is snow! Our high today is supposed to be 41F and the low is dropping to 29F. Dennis brought me a bouquet of marigolds yesterday as they are the last flower standing! They are tough, but even they can't withstand 29F! The forest is now gray, green and dark yellow and orange. We saw a lot of painters out yesterday painting the mountains.

We are off to Cardio Rehab this morning then home for Monday's chores and hopefully, 6977 steps by the end of the day! Gotta stay accountable @deeder522! Stay healthy and do not let MI weather get to you!

Close enough yesterday! I have been doing the math (a hopeless habit of sociologists  ) and I took 189,903 tracked steps in October, which is an average of 6330 steps each day. So, my goal for November is to average 6500 steps per day. Psychologically, I cannot stand not making my step goal and I HATE it when I exceed the daily goal and there are left over steps because I perceive them as "wasted." I know, I am a few bricks short of a load! My family tells me this all the time! But an average works better for me because I know every step counts, so I tend to take getting up and moving more seriously. In the end, that is the real goal right?

@Deeder522 with all the challenges you have had this month, I think you should celebrate beating your mileage goal 76/75 and not stress over the rings. Like for me, maybe getting up and moving is enough for you right now. I was going to get back into the Leslie challenges right away when I came back, but decided to make that a New Year goal rather than try and fail now, because I would have. Dennis is on track, our house is finally mostly unpacked and orderly, and I am finally into a routine that has been consistent for awhile, so I have the mental space to focus on other things. You are dealing with a lot of unpredictability that makes trying to do something consistently nearly impossible. So, :star::star::star: for you for exceeding your mileage goal in October!!!

On another note: The first snow of the season arrived last night!!! I know it is not much but it is measurable at 1/100th of a centimeter!

I also received snow. In fact, a couple of the Lakeshore communities have canceled Trick or Treating b/c of it. Grand Haven has close to 7" as I type. It isn't sticking to the roads by me yet but this is a bit more than I thought we'd get.

We got Ryan in for his labs and Vax's this afternoon. Now we wait and see if he has any reactions. In 4 weeks we go back for another round of labs.

Tomorrow, we'll see what Apple decides to challenge me with next. 🤣

I did it again 🤔and totally forgot to log in here during this month... 🥲again.

But on the upside of things, I only had 3 days this month that were below my personal minimum number of steps as noted on the little clip on my pocket step counter that I have been using this year. (I do not use it on Sundays).

I hope to go back and read all of the posts for October later on this evening or tomorrow-ish. I really need to post this and then the new one for the month of November.

I am finally noticing that I am just starting to not struggle as much with my post Covid brain fog that has been messing with me since I got sick in January this year. I have to still do any number of things that I need to do or catch up on, or to get my life back in order again, or at least feels like it will help with that. I'm still fighting the anxiety that creeps in when I realize that I'm behind or have forgotten something or have to do something that is not necessarily difficult, but is somehow stressing me needlessly.

That is why I made the decision not to read or comment on all of your posts for October before I write this and make the intro for November. I really want to, but it was only several minutes ago I realized that this is the last day of October and once again the month flew by without my posting, and I almost missed making November's intro post.

I was delighted that there were 3 pages of posts for October here!! What a temptation it still is to check in on how everyone was/ is doing. Thank you to everyone who kept this walking thread alive still!

I'm off to November now. Then after that I need to make sure that I'm not missing anything for my home, paperwork wise, or whatever else could still be left undone potentially for October.

So later on this week I'll peek in and read everything for October. {{{Hugs to all}}} and stay warm! We recently dropped down into the 40s and have had rain finally, oh my!!!
Especially after all the many, many, many months of triple or near triple degree temps without rainfall. Some bushes have even burst into bloom again and the squirrels are chasing after all the acorns that have been falling off the oak tree!!

Fingers crossed Ryan has no reaction to the vaxs. Now we all wait, which is the worst part! :worried:

Halloween is very quiet out here and we get no trick-or-treaters . We have missed them horribly since we moved from our Michigan neighborhood where we got over 100 children every Halloween. So, this year we decided to do kind of a 3 day Halloween "celebration." I have had the house decorated for Halloween (when you have had kids, you have decor for any kind of "holiday" )since Oct 1. I just add it to my fall decor. We have been watching Halloween themed movies (Disney type not nightmare type) and last night we made Halloween themed food and alcohol free (Dennis cannot have alcohol until at least Feb) mulled wine and watched Hocus Pocus 2 and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Dennis made "bug" appetizers and I made Mummies in coffins (meatballs in hollowed out potato skins covered with mozzarella strings) and bat shaped cookies. We had a good time and it made not having children coming to our door less noticeable.

No worries @texasgardnr, @Deeder522 and I have been holding down the fort and plugging away at our goals! it seems a lot of people "forget" to check in these days !

See you both in November!
