A September to Remember

I want to pick up on the theme Kathy outlined for us in July: “What will I do in July and in the rest of 2024?” It is just as relevant a question in September as it was a couple of months ago. We attach way too much importance to waiting until January to start a new habit. The best time to start a new habit is right NOW. Identify the small steps that you can take each day that when done daily will get you to your goal. Then jump right in!

This is nothing new to those of you who have been with us for some time. And if you're still working on taming your snowball habit from last month, keep at it! This group typically has an upswing in membership in September as kids and grandkids go back to school and schedules become more routine. If you are new to our group this month, welcome! I'm making my best case for not quietly following the group with the intent of starting to make healthy changes come January. There still 4 months left in 2024. Start now and you will be amazed at how much better you feel when we close out the year.

Several years ago I got a friend request from someone who was new to MFP and eager to get started. When did she start? The day before Thanksgiving! She just didn't think a holiday meal or two necessitated a delay until January. She was very determined. She scoped out an eating plan that worked for her and she stuck to it. And she reached her goals!

Here are a few more ways to make this month a September to Remember:

• As summer fades, September brings cooler weather. This is the perfect time to enjoy outdoor activities, which can support your new habit. Take advantage of the mild temperatures. Go for walks, hikes, or bike rides. Enjoy the outdoors!

• Consider joining community events like fun walks/runs, or park yoga classes. Meeting others can boost your motivation. Also, the fresh air can enhance your mood and energy levels.

• Make sure your goals are measurable. You could set a target like walking for 20 minutes, three times a week. Write down your goals. That way, you have a handy reminder of what you want to achieve.

• Consider the “10-minute rule.” Set aside just 10 minutes each day to engage in your new habit. Whether it’s exercising or meditating, this can help you slowly integrate it into your life without feeling stressed. The key to building a new habit is to start small.

Let's make it a great month!

Having been in education all my life. I’ve always felt like September is the beginning of the new year because it was always the beginning of the school year. Labor Day we would have a work party at school to prepare for the new year.

I’m not depending on cooler weather yet since here in Southern California the heat extends into September and we are expecting a heat wave this week. 🥵 Still, I’m trying to get outside every day in spite of the weather.

I love the idea of a September to Remember, it has a lovely sound! I’ve started some great habits in September, thanks to this group, like yoga and journaling. So, I hope to start a good habit snowball this month.

I’m a little nervous about committing to this new habit, but if not now, when?

I’m going to meditate - the meditations are around your suggested 10 minutes.

    1. This September I will meditate daily.
    2. The small, actionable steps I plan to take towards this goal is that I’ve downloaded and subscribed to the premium version of the Calm app and set a reminder on my phone.
    3. My cue to keep up with my habit will be when my reminder comes up on my phone 📱
    5. My reward for maintaining the habit (anything from a self-compliment to a mark on the calendar) I’m not sure of an appropriate reward - a fist pump seems wrong. Reporting here will be one reward
    6. How can we support you? Cheer me on
    7. What will success look like at the end of September? I’ll be calmer and better able to deal with the stresses of the rest of the day. It’s not really a measurable goal, but it’s an important one.

today’s meditation provided a prompt for my journaling, so 2 birds 🦢 🦢 with one stone

@77tes That’s a great choice. I know meditation works wonders for me.
@macrat12 I find that once I start writing, and I often write for much longer than I intended. Being mindful of the thing we are grateful for is so very self affirming.

This September, I will continue the plan I began Aug 29. Tomorrow will be day 7 of perfect food!

    FOOD
    Calories< goal
    Eat only at home.
No sugar, white flour, potatoes, white rice, only Ezekiel bread, no crackers or chips
1/2 cup beans/lentils per day on average
    Large cabbage salad
    Berries 6oz
    Cantaloupe 8-11 oz or similar

    EXERCISE
I am building back my walking program.
Walk in AM with current minimum goal 4,000 steps daily

I am building back to my stand hours goal of 12 hours. It dropped significantly the past month. I am
    not sure why.

I also tried lentils - liked them more than I thought I would! My taste buds change for the better when I don’t eat sugar YAY

    Everything is going well.
Food is in “remission” ie healthy, cravings gone, Lower calories, only eating at home
Exercise is better. Longer walks, more frequent.
    Sleep is great.

It was a difficult battle to get back in the groove every other time only to fail. This time it was easy. The key turning point: reminding myself of all the health benefits

I had a significant wins this yesterday & morning
    Blood glucose 100 yesterday.
Today: 92 Lowest in a very long time.

Exercising is apparently the key to lower glucose according to the nutritionist I am seeing. Very happy as I definitely want to avoid diabetes and all of it’s complications

Also I was hungry all the time before blood glucose 105, 107 Now I’m not. Much easier to eat reasonable and “hear” my true hunger cues.

Losing weight slowly, but I am losing

    Food quality high

We ate small amt < 1 oz a couple of days, but we could see it was going to escalate, so we stopped again. Ate lunch out with a friend…then wanted to do it again. Didn’t.

Sugar & eating out: both now under control

The really good news is I have extended the distance of my walks and therefore my step count
Today I added more hills & distance.
    Noticeably stronger with more stamina.

I can see the weight loss will be slower until I can build up my exercise more. I’m doing it gradually so I don’t get another injury.

I am putting more effort into my clothes, hair, and even wore lipstick under my mask today!

My art practice is the most fun ever!

Thank you @77tes & @TerriRichardson112 for your comments & for doing the hard work routinely. You both inspire me❣️🦋🤩

September has been a whirlwind. Time seems too hurtle past so quickly.

@77tes You are doing so well on the meditation, Julie. I find it invaluable in coping with the vagaries of everyday life. There are so many great resources for guided meditations. Have you tried YouTube yet? Just google 10 minute meditations and loads of options appear.

I hope you all have a great October 🍂
