Your OALs would like to have your thoughts on the new format that was used for the 2024 Fall Challenge. Thank you in advance for sharing.

I was confused at first by what you mean by "new format". But I'm guessing you mean the foot race rather than flying with specific destinations. I'm good with it. Having researched and written destinations myself (mostly for IBC), I know how much work it is. While the destinations are interesting, and I always at least scan them, I'll admit I don't always take the time to carefully read them, and I know I'm not alone in that. I'm really not sure it's worth the work that goes into it when we can accomplish our goal without it. If someone has the time and interest to create the destination write ups, I have no objections. It does bring added interest even when not carefully read. But when leaders are stretched for time, I'm okay with letting it go.5

I’m happy with this format. It’s much easier to understand and makes more sense than landing a plane.3
-
I don't see much difference between landing a plane and breaking a ribbon. It gave team leaders an excuse to find new memes, so that was a plus.
I found the Healthy Habit for Protein to be very strict, and disastrous for my weight loss, cuz I tend to be competitive, but I resent being short and therefore deprived of more flexibility in caloric intake, and being old and therefore more limited in ambitious cardio. (I also had to contend with a change in DH's hunting schedule; I normally have free rein this time of year, but he lost his main hunting outlet for October and early November, plus he suffered another reminder of "last man standing" (fewer friends still living).)
Why on earth did you all set an upper limit on Fiber? Just worry about getting sort of enough. Most people get hardly any, and that's why the "bar" is set low, so they won't get discouraged. (Just like the recommendations to get 150 minutes of exercise in a week: people need more, but authorities don't want to overwhelm people with a higher bar.)4 -
Have to agree with @Kateljm .
It was good to be able to claim points for trying to get the fibre. Plus or minus 3 seems very arbitrary, but I suppose you have to provide a number in some way.
But surely the bonus points for protein should have been for trying to do protein from food rather than supplements whether or not we managed to get within plus/minus an individual protein total?
But it was certainly interesting to meet some new challenges for healthy lifestyle - thank you.2 -

Awwww TY TY TY for the positive feedback. Week 6 protein read as: ✔️To score points this week
Using your MFP Nutrition Tracker (or whatever you use), please view what your daily allowance should be. (This number may be different for different people). If you are within 5 grams of your protein goal (either over or under), you have earned 10 points. Add an additional 2 points if you have reached this goal by eating Using your MFP Nutrition Tracker (or whatever you use), please view what your daily allowance should be. (This number may be different for different people). If you are within 5 grams of your protein goal (either over or under), you have earned 10 points. Add an additional 2 points if you have reached this goal by eating food only (not including supplements/powders etc though in many diets they are essential) You may count any supplements/powders etc in your 10 points just not the bonus. Why not? We are striving to see how our members are doing with food and nutrition. Keep in mind this is a challenge, for myself and many others, getting enough protein through food is a challenge
We are loving the feedback. We are hoping more will comment here.2 -
My thoughts —
As this was my first challenge, I didn’t know this was a changed format until I asked about some of the terms (flight attendants?). I didn’t have much of an issue with the format itself, but ….
*** I personally disliked the prompts to ‘post your data if you haven’t already because two teams already broke their ribbon’. Some have multiple jobs, families, etc, and can’t check in every day. I also don’t think I fully understood before joining that this challenge required a daily check in, so that could be my fault.
*** The lack of weekly updates - the participants who enjoy the progress of a challenge can get bored without updates. There hasn’t been an overall status update since week 3 — it’s hard to motivate some to reach goals or ‘beat’ another team in a vacuum.
*** lack of response to questions — in a weekly thread on a team board, I asked a clarifying question on the rules (I don’t recall which week) — the question was never answered.
I get it — people are busy, life happens, and this is all volunteer, and I appreciate the opportunity to participate, but from before the challenge even started, there were issues. (I STILL don’t understand why a date was set to RSVP to a group invite & then that invitation was canceled/deleted before the date arrived.)

I was fine with the changed format - race instead of flying to destinations each week. As DNjoys mentioned, most don't read all of that information anyway so while it is interesting, it is a lot of work that often goes unnoticed.
I had no problem personally with the protein or fibre goals since those are areas that I concentrate on as a rule anyway. Most of my team seemed to be hitting their protein goals almost every day. Fibre I know can be more difficult since it's not always something that people look at, so being able to earn some points for trying to include more fibre rich foods I'm sure helped many to give it a shot.
What did concern my whole leadership team on Fit Force and a number of my team members, was the lack of flexibility on meal planning - not being able to earn points for the meals that one did successfully plan and eat if one meal was not eaten as planned. We all felt that demanding perfect execution when it comes to food, is not a healthy attitude to expect, when we often tell members to celebrate the steps that they do take to improve their health and eating.
I do appreciate all the work that our OAL team puts into planning each challenge so thanks for all of your hard work during the fall when I know that some of you had some challenging circumstances to deal with in your own lives.5 -
This was my first challenge plus I’m pretty new to MFP. I don’t have a preference for the mile or destination format as I see both as motivating. I found the protein portion very challenging as I would be under one day and overshoot the next. I got pretty frustrated until I read something to the effect of “challenges are not supposed to be easy.”3
-
I liked the new format of just walking. I was able to make my own destination each day to get to and from a destination that took me through my personal challenge of 10000 steps per day.
e.g. milk run to the supermarket with a backpack when I needed it.
While I didn’t once meet the protein or fibre goals I appreciated the wake up call. My competitive spirit will challenge me to get there gradually FOR MY OWN BENEFIT.
I’ll concentrate on these two for a couple of weeks then I may just tackle my personal nemesis. Drinking water! I know it must be doable since I stopped drinking coffee a couple of months back because I suspected it was causing my tummy grumbles and I don’t miss it.
A challenge isn’t a challenge if it doesn’t challenge!
Just as monkey won’t find swinging through trees challenging so doing things you do automatically, like brushing your teeth everyday isn’t a challenge.
You do a great job and some folk don’t appreciate the time you give up to set them up.

@cinebibliophile
The prompts are super helpful (for me). And drives those who are competitive and/or desire to be a good team player. I can’t stand chatting all the time, but I will try to give you what you need (which are my points).
You are free post up your miles no later than Saturday—however the “motivation” is that you are on a team and as a team player you want to do what it takes to get your team across the finish line and not horde points that can help get them there.
You don’t have to post every day, but strategically in away that honors your personal rhythm and not hold up the team from making progress. Therefore posting by Monday/early in the week at least your exercise minutes is most helpful to the team.
In the beginning, I didn’t get it either and use to post my points on Friday all the time. That was “technically” fine and keeps you in good standing. But—the goal is to reach the goal (ie breaking the ribbon) as quick as possible and that’ll only work if everybody works.
Sorry about the other glitches you’ve experience, but congrats on completing your first 5% challenge.
When asking questions, Be sure to tag a leader (multiple if possible) anytime you have a question because if you have an active thread, things can get lost in the shuffle. I’ve even requested that they tag me in return so I don’t miss important stuff. Or better yet, message them directly—it feels really personal, connected and you’ve got a “paper trail”.

@StayFITTer @cinebibliophile
StayFITTer, thank you for responding to cinebibliophile. You answered the concerns perfectly!
Cinebibliophile, Thank you for responding to this post! We welcome all feedback. I'm happy you stuck with us and hope to see you back for winter. On 10/31, my mom fell and fractured her neck in two places. After that, any time I spent online was reserved for necessary tasks related to running the challenge. It takes a lot of time to do the weekly reports, so given my home situation, reports were not a priority. I will have a final report as soon as I can after the Fall challenge is over.
This is a screenshot of the post with the team descriptions.
I'm sorry you didn't get the team you chose. We wait as long as we can before shuffling names around, but balancing the teams takes priority, so the final date to pick up invitations is changeable. That is why we stress picking up invitations as soon as possible. I will make sure to note that the date can change in future challenges. Please feel free to choose the team that was your first choice for the fall in the winter challenge. I'm sure your fall teammates will miss you.
Thanks everyone for sharing your feedback! It helps us as we plan the next challenge.

It really didn't bother me of the change of destination to ribbon breaking. I didn't think of the work involved of choosing a destination. I did like looking at the different places as I really don't travel. Less work for the leaders is a must as you have busy lives too.
I did struggle getting enough protein. it has been work to get enough. But like they say its a Challenge for a reason!
I liked seeing how the other teams were doing, it ups my competitiveness. of course i like first place/watching psl team or us going for the win3 -
Destinations are nice but not at all necessary. The ribbon breaking was good.2
-
I agree with DNjoys and Yiche912 about the "destination goals". It is fun, but not necessary.
Since I am retired and have plenty of time to cook and also enjoy cooking, I don't think I ever am short on protein or main nutrients. I do not like to track my nutrients or calories, so knowing exactly how much I get of something is not happening. If anything is not good with my diet, it would be too much fat or sugar. The format to add a certain number of fruits and vegetable every day was easy to follow and a good hint to me to eat more of both.
Thank you to our planners for the challenges. It is a lot of work for them and very helpful to so many of us.3 -
I like the format for the challenge. All team leaders are doing a great job!1
-
I liked walking more than flying. I know it takes a great deal of time to investigate, gather info, and publish the details of each challenge. And while it is interesting hearing about new places around the world, I would rather all the volunteer time spent be directed toward the LTGL Challenges themselves, rather than the locations.
I typically have created a weekly Step Tracking challenge on the Slimpossible Team, that aligned with the weekly destinations. Since we may be walking, and not flying in future rounds, I will be giving some thought on how to best modify that for the team and better align with our Race theme.
I love the Protein LTGL.
I also like the Meet Your Cheerleaders at the start of the round to pull the team into the Chat and have them get to know the team. It's a good time to communicate with everyone and starts the round off well.
I like Measurements - Too often I am stuck in a yoyo loop on my scale, but the measurements this time around were a real positive for me, even though the scale was not a huge loss.
For Intentional Eating, I thought it was a good challenge, but tough. I do log my food daily, I even pre-log to work at hitting the right CICO and Macros, and I did not get my ten points every day, but I tried.
Suggestions you might incorporate for Challenges -
I am not sure if @luv2dns2 is suggesting tracking sugar or fat as a future LTGL challenge, but I LIKE that idea!
I also like these ideas
learning about tracking, and improving Macros
trying new exercise methods/moves
learning about, reducing, eliminating gluten
2 -
I like doing challenges, but I really didn’t enjoy this one too much. It was a constant struggle to get my fiber count, perhaps this is because I’m close to my goal weight. I didn’t care for the way the points were accumulated. However, I really appreciate the work our leaders put in to coming up with ideas for the challenges - please understand that these are my personal thoughts, not any reflection on the our leader’s ideas.1
-
I like that the challenge keeps me on track to focus. Whether a foot race or a flight - the format is fine. I also like focusing on different things. Fiber, protein, water - all good habits to focus on.1
-
I ENJOYED THE NEW FORMAT AND THOUGHT IT WAS AN IMPROVEMENT FROM THE OLD FORMAT. I THINK CHANGING IT UP MAKES IT MORE CHALLENGING AND THAT IT WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT-CHALLENGING YOURSELF TO THINK SERIOUSLY ABOUT BEING HEALTHY(WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU) AND DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
I THINK EVERYONE WHO VOLUNTEERS THEIR TIME AND ENERGY TO RUNNING THESE CHALLENGES DESERVE A LOT OF PRAISE AND CREDIT FOR ALL THEIR HARD WORK.
FOR THOSE WHO ARE NEW YOU SHOULD ALWAYS FEEL FREE TO MESSAGE ANY LONG MEMBERS WITH QUESTIONS OR THE NEED TO GET CLARIFICATION- THOSE OF US WHO HAVE BEEN HERE A LONG TIME ARE MORE THAN WILLING TO EASE THE LEADERS' ROLE.
OBVIOUSLY A CHALLENGE IS WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT AND WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE-SUGGESTIONS ARE ALWAYS WELCOMED AND APPRECIATED BY THE LEADERS.2 -
This was my first challenge on MFP, so I can't speak to the old format vs. the new format, but I have really enjoyed getting to know my team (Thinner Winners) and settling into the format. It's been just the right amount of daily engagement and accountability for me. The most difficult week for me was the one that overlapped protein and fiber in the same week. I'm just not able to reach both goals through food and stay within my calorie range. But otherwise it has been great! My group leaders are awesome and I look forward to the next challenge!
Thank you to all the leadership for all the work you put into these challenges. It is really appreciated!3 -
I'm fine with the new format. I appreciate all your work on setting up the LTGL challenges. I felt some of the new LTGL's were overly restrictive this time and a little heavy on food challenges. I prefer more of a mix of food and other challenges.
*Intentional Eating - Making a daily meal plan the night before - is very helpful. I am continuing that. However, staying exactly on your plan for the day seems unrealistic - days don't always go as planned. It would be more realistic to require that changes during the day not increase your total calories for the day.
*I see no reason to put an upper limit on Protein and Fiber, especially not such a tight limit. It really complicates planning for no good reason that I can see. I managed it five out of seven days but it was time consuming and fiddly and not something that seems of value to me.
*Having protein and fiber challenges the same week without increasing calories was very difficult for me. Mostly what is good for increasing one decreases the other. Most high protein foods are low fiber (except beans) and most high fiber foods don't have much protein (except beans.). I found it extra hard on a low carbohydrate diet since most high fiber foods have a fair amount of carbs. I did manage to do it, but had to use psyllium powder for part of the fiber. I plan to continue that habit.
*Five fruits a day - I only managed the 5 fruits a day because my team leader said it was OK to include "vegetables" that are botanically fruits. Five fruits a day is way too much sugar for my low carb diet. This LTGL was not helpful for me.
Thanks again for your leadership.4 -
Long time 5% challenge participant.
I guess I'm in the minority but I miss virtually going somewhere (particularly since going places IRL is no longer an option for me). If the leadership feels that that format is too much work, fine.
I thought that some of the HH challenges were too restrictive, as some others have mentioned. It's fine to make things challenging, but day after day of not managing to get points for something can get discouraging.
I really appreciate all the work the leadership does to keep the challenges going, especially under very difficult circumstances - thank you for all you do!

I liked the new ribbon format. While the destinations are interesting, it's negative is that it requires more time for others to prepare.
LTGLs, Prefer: Meet the Cheerleaders, BMR, Measurements, Food Diary, Freggies (all encompassing and more flexible than fruits or vegs), Read Labels. It might be good to award points for planned and executed exercise WITH recording on that day, as it has been hard to get members who post at the end of the week to change their posting habit to a daily post.
It is important to post the weekly status on weekly finish across the teams, though I recognize how much work that requires. And life happens.
Is there a different format that might lighten this load? Perhaps extra, rotating help can be recruited next round to make that more possible? It seems too much to have it on one OALs shoulders, and perhaps some of the leaders from the teams could possibly help, if the responsibility can be shared?
I appreciate all that the leaders do to keep the Challenges organized, thoughtful, and operational. Thank you!

I liked the format. Like several others, i never took the time to fully read about the destination. I did learn a couple things here and there about them though.
I liked the 1 thread for the weight. Made it much simpler without having to go back to the last week.
The challenges were good and a little different from other seasons.
I am hoping that my schedule slows down some at some point so I have more time to concentrate on the team aspect of this and post more frequently.
I appreciate all that the leaders do for us!. Thank you, I know it is a ton of work.

I don't see much difference between landing a plane and breaking a ribbon. It gave team leaders an excuse to find new memes, so that was a plus.

Hey there, my friend! I really appreciate your input on some of these. SOMETIMES when writing the Challenges, we are not thinking about 'getting the most points for this or that' but instead when we have to make a member say hmmmmmmmm - and the member may not always be able to get the 'most points possible' - that means that they are thinking about what was written and they are working the challenge before them.
The Overall Leadership Team wrote these Challenges because if we didn't write something we wouldn't have had a Challenge. That said, we do realize that having several of us writing as opposed to one of us, there may have been some inconsistencies ... that could be because our writing styles are different; our research styles are different; and once you've written something and read it several times - 'mistakes can be easily overlooked'. We've actually talked a lot about that and have decided that there IS a solution and will be implementing it. More to come on that - but, hopefully things will be a little easier to read/digest.
Finally, as I stated above - please, PLEASE remember this is a CHALLENGE (or a contest, if you will) team members against each other and then the overall teams against one another. Most importantly, these weeks / challenges are written for YOU. YOU need to CHALLENGE YOURSELF, first and foremost ~ end of sentence. It shouldn't be easy; it shouldn't make you say oh yeah - I do this all the time, no big deal. You should MINDFULLY work the challenge(s). If some of the Challenges are easy for you that is fine - but all of them should not be. They are designed to make you THINK about what you do and then try to execute as best as you can. Not everyone will get 100% and THAT is really the point.
I hope that makes sense to you!
Best,

Thanks for taking the time to write. I gave a pretty lengthy explanation on our thought process for the Fall Challenge and I hope that it helps to answer some of your questions as well. I'm not even saying that you will 'like' my answer ~ what I am saying is that it is not about getting 100% all the time. That said - if you do a little research and have an idea of how the scoring could be better (which I'm sure it can be). . .please research and bring forth some ideas that make more sense.
NOTE: The 'bonus points' seem to be a little cumbersome to track they may not be utilized in the 2025 Winter 5% Challenge and if we do utilize them, we need to be strategic about how they are used. Please be aware - WE (the OAL Team) is a work-in-progress as well and we can take these notes and attempt to make corrections in our thinking/writing.
Best,

I love the feedback!! I'm going to try to answer, if I may:
Post your data if you haven't already because two teams already 'broke their ribbon' - WELL, the CHALLENGE is a RACE. I thought that this was well published and understood; but apparently not. Can you suggest another way to write this so that it makes sense??
Weekly Updates - I honestly struggle with this one!! I have been one of the OAL's (Overall Leaders) that have been responsible for posting daily updates and making a big deal out of those that have met their first part of the Challenge (breaking the ribbon in 1st, 2nd, 3rd place) and then overall at the end of the week it is fun to see what teams got the most points, etc. When we were on SP, this was fun and many just joined in and cheered on teams that came in on top and encouraged those that were further behind. I don't get that here on MFP - I'm not sure why!??!!!!!! Could you perhaps suggest a way that we can make that happen and make the teams that are at the 'front of the pack' be the ones to beat to get EVERYONE engaged?
Lack of response questions: I truly am sorry for this. By now, you may have gotten your answer or figured it out. If you have a question, the best place to ask is in your team's Chat Thread. If you don't get an answer there - please, PLEASE reach out to your leadership team and, finally - if you are still confused, please reach out to an OAL. We are the ones that brought the Challenges here to MFP and have gone through several years of answering questions - so please make sure that you reach out to us. If you don't know who the Overall Leadership Team is ... here is a refresher:
As far as an invite being extended and then retracted: We try to balance the teams and have no way of knowing how several hundred people will respond. Sometimes we have very little time to get people to join and then balance the teams, that is something that we should perhaps look at - but the deadlines have A LOT to do with balancing the numbers so that the teams all have an even chance to be competitive with one another.

This was not intended to be a 'Walking Challenge' but if that is your exercise of choice then better yet! However, EXERCISE should always be INTENTIONAL - even if it is walking. Walking to get in a certain number of steps per day is different than intentional walking as a way of exercising. I'm right there with you - water is something that I would think about and incorporate in my daily routine - for some reason, I've gotten away from that and struggle terribly with it now. My vow is to get back to basics in 2025 and water is one of those basics that I will be concentrating on. You should check in with me every now and again to see how I am doing!!2
