Today's Topic: Dealing With Setbacks
An unexpected overeating. A bout with a bad cold. Fatigue. Bad news from a family memory. Fill in the blank _________________________.
Any of these things can cause a setback in our weight loss and health improvement efforts. How do you deal with these things? Have your methods changed over the years? When does it get to be more than something you, personally, can handle, and you need to seek professional input? Or, are you a lone wolf - always figuring it out on your own?

I lost my late wife in 2022 and lost 19 lbs and had to do a lot of counseling. So over eating was not in the picture for me. When I met my wife of today I gained it back.
I am now going through tramatic eye issues after cateract surgey in my only seeing eye which developed a secondary careract and now my vision is not so good.
My faith is holding me together and I probably would be stress eating. Thing is I want to lose 50 lbs. I've gained and I self talk myself not to indulge.1 -
Things that upset the apple cart of health or weight management are a fact of life, not an ugly rumor. Handling these with reasonable success is the key. I have gotten better at this over the years. I gained 10 lbs recently in the lead up and follow up to my wife’s successful brain surgery. I felt compelled to overeat. Usually, I can mentally assess a setback in life or in my eating life, say to myself “These things happen” and move on. My best results are when I plan meals, track foods eaten, exercise, get good sleep and manage stress reasonably well. I have had 3 consults with a dietitian to ensure the foods I eat, eating patterns and health considerations make good nutritional sense. Taking things in stride helps, as do solid relationships with family and friends1

Howling at the moon is my preferred option.
😉
I can shrug off most issues such as overeating and such. The issue is when I have a trend of bad decisions and keep repeating that behavior. To this point, I simply try to find the pattern, and then figure out a way to interrupt the pattern.
Of course, I’m just responding to symptoms and not treating the disease . . . 🤷🏻♂️1 -
My personal struggle for this is that when I am acutely stressed (e.g., when something untoward happens), I tend to fall back to having some liquor to help "calm my nerves." I appreciate that this is a terrible habit, and to this day, I continue to try to work on it. In recent days/weeks, with my daughter's wedding coming up, I am finding my stress levels are going through the roof (especially when I have to send a payment for some part of the wedding!). My natural instinct is to "unwind" with a glass of bourbon, but I have been doing a good job of resisting those inclinations. Sometimes, for example, I'll substitute a flavored soda to replace the "drinking" aspect of the behavior. Other times I might have a snack, although I'm working on avoiding doing that too.
Thankfully, I continue to look at each meal (or time period) as a time to start over with a clean slate. I don't usually throw myself the rest of the way down the stairs. Whew.2
