Today's Topic: The Art of Balance

This is topical for me as the result of an event yesterday.

I was walking between buildings at work yesterday. The buildings are separated by a city street. As I started to cross the street, which I've done hundreds of times, my toe caught on a crack in the asphalt. I stumbled forward, hoping to recover, but I didn't. I came down really freaking hard on my right hand. I had a few other minor abrasions, but it was obvious I had done something to the hand. So, I went to urgent care and discovered I broke my hand. Clean break. Should heal nicely.

But, it got me to thinking about balance and aging. Five years ago, I had a horrible bout of vertigo, terrible experience. I have not fully trusted my balance since that time, especially going down steps/stairs.

Given that many of us here are creeping up in age, I am wondering if balance is an issue for others. If so, do you do things to compensate for balance concerns? Avoid certain situations? Change the type of shoe you wear? Perhaps use something like a cane? Or, is it all good for you?

Just curious.

Well I just turned 78 on 7/6 and I've been doing some home health care for a medical situation by a nurse every month but I added PT for awhile that's ending this week.

Some of the exercises the therapist worked with me on was balancing. It was amazing to me as I have aged how my balance has deteriated. We put one foot in front of another toe to heal. Then we walked around cones in a tight figure eight. There were a couple of other exercises also.

I absolutely am feeling the effects of balance with age. It could be weight and other medical situations that effect it to but I definitely have balance issues.

@misterhub Greg sorry you fell but glad it's going to heal up good. I had a fall about 8 weeks ago in my living room due to having a rug that we new was a trip hazard. The 9X12 rug has now been removed. Blasted my right knee and hit my right forearm on an object that caused a pretty big hematoma. Pretty much all healed up now.

Greg, I hope it heals fully, and quickly.

I have Vertigo, and balance issues. Really, not much can be done for the former, and I just keep on keeping on.

People have been saying for years that I’m unbalanced . . .

My mother, at about age 88, took a balance and fall prevention class at her Senior Center. The night she graduated (and got a certificate!), we went to see the Boston Pops Christmas performance. On the way out, she fell and broke her hip. “Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln . . . . “

I know that at age 69 my balance and ability to recover are likely diminished. I won’t get on a roof, or climb more than a ten foot stepladder. When on a stepladder, I follow the belly button rule. When taking the stairs, I always have a hand on the handrail, and when it’s slippery I do do The Penguin Walk. I also do Tai Chi twice a week as a way to maintain ROM and improve balance, and my daily stretching and strengthening is targeted at lower extremities - including muscles that are important for balance.

The last time I fell, it was while using a Segway about fifteen years ago. My greatest accomplishment in that fall was that I managed to tuck and roll rather than try to break my fall. As a result, my fall was the only thing that was broken. (And my skin - I gave myself road rash that covered an area about the size of a football.)

So I’m conscious of my balance, for sure.

"The last time I fell, it was while using a Segway about fifteen years ago."

I've always wanted to ride on one of those. While I am not deadly brave, I can be stupidly brave; so, I'd probably still try it out. ;-)

We have a guy, up the hill from us, that uses a single, motorized wheel. Whizzws down, and up the hill with apparent ease.

The Norwegians have a popular How-To-Fall class for seniors that is strongly advocated by their nationalized healthcare system.

I do regular balance exercises. I have a firm foam balance board that I use, stand alternately on one leg while brushing my teeth and do other exercises to maintain good proprioception. Thankfully, I have strong legs from many years of recreational cycling, which helps in the event of a possible fall.

Commiserations to Greg on his broken hand bone and to Derrick on his injured knee. May you both heal quickly and fully.

I have had some balance issues over the years, and I am currently struggling with one that is most likely the result of low blood pressure brought on by 1 or more of the meds I take for cardiac issues. Working hard at trying to get the balance of meds corrected with my team of doctors.

I had some dizziness and trouble walking in a strait line coming out of a movie theatre just 2 days ago. I did Tai Chi for about 2 years a decade ago, and I kind of felt like it helped me with balance quite a bit, guess I should restart the practice

Sorry to hear about folks falls/injuries, hope you all recover soon.

I haven't had issues with balance and falling so far, but it's an obvious risk as one ages. I recall reading somewhere that strength training can help with this issue. I imagine that using free weights with lower-body exercises, like squats and lunges, really force your proprioceptive systems to step up their game, since those types of exercises with heavy weights require good balance, in addition to strength.

Segways are fun. The last real fall I had was when skiing a few years ago. It was the usual "caught an edge" on a hill type thing. No real injury, except for my ego when I had to collect my skis from my "yard sale!"
