This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Today's Topic: Do you think? or if you haven't, or do you want to share, whether a physician has helped you? With diets or your diet journey? Or do you have an opinion in general about physicians and their role in weight control. I feel certain that above sentence is grammatically messed up.

No, I haven't been helped by a physician with weight control. I have, however, been helped by a registered dietitian. Diets are generally not something that most physicians are expert at, although maybe with the management of the new weight loss drugs. Plus, the 15 minute medical appointment doesn't allow for the depth of information and discussion required.

I have not seen a doctor or a dietitian. I am autodidactic with regard to nutrition and diet.

Everything I know about managing my weight I learned from GoaD and WW meetings. The only way I could be considered an autodidact is that I will occasionally learn from my mistakes.

I will just say the medical profession has not been influential - positive or negative - in my journey, and leave it at that.

Well, I started my current path when my doctor said, "Well al, you made it! You ARE a diabetic." I was 335# at that time.

I have been down to my WW goal weight of 220# on 9/29/2021. I'm now bouncing from 230# to 245#.

At my age (81) the doctors really don't carp much. More encouragement of my walking.

Still go to WW FTF meetings with TOL (1-15# BELOW goal), and try to mitigate my sweet teeth. ;)

As a physician, I can confidently say that most physicians are quacks! Ha ha ha!

We got limited training at best on diet and nutrition. I can tell you all sorts of biochemical pathways and enzymes involved in the breakdown, uptake, circulation, and utilization of macro- and micronutrients. However, applying that to specific dietary details is not something we spent much time on in my training.

I, too, learned most of my practical "how-to" from WW and GOAD. Plus, trying to understand things myself pushed me to do a fair amount of reading the primary medical literature and other associated literature on the topic. I feel like I learned a lot along the way, but much of how I operate is based on trial and error.

First, no other than telling me I need to lose weight I have never had a paid Dr. give me a lot of help on diet nutrition or exercise. Second I am married to a retired physician, and she will admit that she learned more from WW meetings than she did from her training as a Doc. that being said she continues to keep up with the various medical literature journal's and will quote to me what the latest studies say. She tends to also be influenced by diet trends, like keto, mediteranean etc and tires to move us in whatever direction. Its exhausting!
