    Happy August, everyone!

Is anyone else doing any reading on nutrition and exercise? I am being inspired this week by reading through the New Scientist Essential Guide Better You. My public library offers it through Libby.

    Inspiring factoids:

"There's no substantiated clinical evidence for health benefits from extracted fiber or synthetic fiber made from ingredients of plant origin. The good evidence is for diets where the fiber comes from naturally fibrous foods."

"The group found that compared with someone who ate half a serving of fruit or vegetables a day [serving here equals 80 grams, a little under 3 oz.], people who ate five a day saw a 14 per cent drop in their risk of coronary heart disease, while people who ate 10 a day had a 24 per cent reduction. Similar patterns emerged for stroke and heart disease – when it came to all-cause mortality, five-a-day-ers had a 24 per cent reduction in risk compared with half-a-portion-ers, while 10-a-day-ers had a 31 per cent drop."

Wait, it is August ? Wow time flies. Only 7 weeks left here in Alaska. Brooks was offered a contract for next summer. We are thinking about moving here or becoming snow birds. Last weekend was cold and rainy. We went to JBER, the military base and swam inside. It felt so good. They also have indoor pickleball. Plus water aerobics. 2 full gyms with 2 big indoor swimming pools! We have started looking around at houses. Last weekend we drove to OtterLake on JBER. Kayak rental was $20.00/ hour. About all I can do.

Austin - I love information like this. Plus high fiber diets reduce colon cancer too. I love my cabbage salad with beans. I Subscribe to Consumer health. I will look up the New Scientist Essential Guide Better You.

I have a 73 y/o friend coming to visit me at the end of the week. She is so inspiring. She went on a 4 day bike trip (no electric bike for her), she loves to hike, yoga and swim. I hope I can keep up with her. Seriously!

Hello, Bisky! The kayaking looks grand! Here in Austin, I keep eyeing Ladybird Lake. I would love to get an open top kayak so that I can tootle around there.

Your 73 y/o friend sounds amazing! I am kinda with her on bicycles — I do not get the appeal of electric. I love my 12-speed Cannondale.

I have spent 2 hours so far today decluttering, and am off to take a lod to the special place for dropping off electronics. Woohoo!

I'm on a decluttering kick, too!

I'm just going through my bedroom and closet right now and I'm finally unburdening myself of clothing that is just not going to ever fit again. Or if it does, the fashion will be off somewhere somehow. Getting rid of it feels so good. (correction, getting it packed up ready to donate feels good, actually leaving it behind at the donation center and driving away lighter feels fantastic)

As for the electronics and special place to drop them off…we have that same hurdle. And my husband has always had and worked at programming/computer related work. So what you are accomplishing there is #futuregoals over here, Austin :) (I still have the first iphone I ever owned because of that special drop off place issue LOL)

We're going to have to get brakes on our old truck fixed (the pedal sticks, hopefully an easy fix) and super old and cracked tires replaced, just to be able to make dump runs and donation runs. We wanted to rent a big rubbish bin for drop-off but we have a tree that we love that is too close to the driveway, and a truck + bin could not get by it.

Donna, that's great news about the 4-month contract offer for next year. Have you and Brooks decided to go for it? done deal or still thinking about it? That's a lot of company you've been having in Alaska!

Making our own meals has been going well overall. We are saving quite a bit of money. The kitchen gets messier with the dishes, even though we're keeping the meals pretty simple. We've had takeout several times which defeats the purpose of healthier eating but is still cheaper than our Plantage meals were.

Exercise has not been good. I've got more excuses than miles walked. I guess I'm still getting in a decent amount of steps from all of the organizing and cleaning but I never remember to put on my fitness watch to track it.

reading back up, i definitely do get the appeal of electric bikes. I don't feel confident on a bike in traffic on the road so it's probably a no-go for me from the start, but for me in the shape i'm in and with the tremendous hills we have in the area, an e-bike would be a great way to get fit starting at my level where I would definitely need help part way up those hills.

That said, my in-laws got e-bikes and my MIL crashed hers a few times and they ended up getting rid of them. I'm not sure if she just wasn't used to riding a bike anymore, or if the e-bike is harder to control.
