Hey everyone. I'm new to crossfit, been doing it for 2 months. Just when I figure out what I like to wear in warm weather, I need to start trying to figure out what to wear in cold weather. And... I've been trying to figure out what kind of shoes to wear also. I was wearing my Brooks running shoes until I did some reading and realized that wasn't the best idea. Now I have a cheap pair of converse (the Target version) that I wear until I can afford something better.
I wanted your thoughts on winter gear and shoes. What do you all like?
Thanks for your thoughts and ideas.
Jenn

I'm in Southern California, so can't offer much advice on cold weather gear. As for shoes...I do like my Inov8s for almost everything except rope climbs. I've also ordered a pair of oly lifting shoes for strength only days, but they're $$. Chuck Taylors are a pretty decent shoe to wear for lifting. Or go barefoot. The problem is when you have lifts and running in the same wod. That's where I love the inov8s. They aren't ideal for lifting, but they're a lot better than running shoes with all that cushioning in the heel.0

I have a pair of Nike Frees (trainers, not running shoes) that I'm wearing right now. I like that they're pretty flat and really light. There have been days where we've been doing all weighted squats or lifts and I've switched to my O-lifting shoes, though. They're not great for lifting, but....0

I would read up on the Inov-8's then do some searching for other shoes. I wear Saucony's ... they're a "track" shoe (flat and light). My issue with INOV-8 is they became popular because of crossfit ... just like Air Jordan's became popular and so forth. Some swear by the INOV-8 and others bought into the hype. As far as winter goes, look into some 'smart wool' running socks, I got mine off of Amazon. They'll help keep you warm and dry. This will be my first year WODing in winter, so I feel your pain.
As far as clothes go - I like compression capri's right now. May even try pants. They give me a lot of movement and are comfortable to wear. Shirts; I try to layer. I usually hope on Ebay and look for some cheap UA or anything that's moisture wicking.
I hate running in the cold, makes my ears hurt, so I always take a headband that covers my ears. Sometimes I'll wear gloves, which is great when it's raining and we have to run then lift, keeps my hands dry!0 -

I agree they became popular because of CF, but I love how light they are and that I can use them during wods with lots of different skills.0 -
Its my first Crossfit/working out in the winter where I dont have to wear sweatpants. (WOHOO!!)
I typically wear vibrams jayas when I work out, just because I like how it much it doesnt make me feel like im wearing anything clunky. no extra chunk to my feet. (Ima chunky enough... dont need any help) for a while I was wearing New Balance/Vibram hybrid but our Box grew, so now the floors and the track/trail soles dont work well, I slide all over the place.
Ive been looking at compression pants/socks but I have big calves and cant find anything for a wide leg... I layer like crazy (even during the summer tanks and tees, but will prob add some fleece jackets from Under Armor, or pick up some of those compression sleeves.
Might look at what Lulumon has, they tend to have some good crossfit friendly clothes to wear for women.0 -
I have the Inov8s, New Balance trail minimus and the Merrill trail glove. The New Balance are my favorites.
As for clothing - my SIL is a manager at Lululemon so almost all of my workout wear is Lulu. I would never pay full price for that stuff but I love it at a steep discount!
I WILL pay full price for Smartwool socks, shirts and underwear. I always ask for it for Christmas. Boring, yes but that stuff is pricey. And awesome - I get two or three wears between washing because it breathes so well and is microbial. Also, knee-hi Smartwool socks for lifting days are a must. My shins are suffering!0 -
Knee socks...
yes or no?
purely fashion?
any function?0 -
I often wear knee socks when there are DL's or any type of lifting from the ground involved. I've definitely noticed the bruising on my shins has gone down since wearing them. It's no fun being a woman with bruised legs!! The socks are worth it. Not 100% bruise-proof, but they help.0

I've never gone with the knee high socks ... guess I wear my bruises like my calluses, badges of honor? Theres a select few at my box who do but I've never noticed any significant bruising on my legs.0

Definitely knee socks for deadlifts and cleans.0

Just got my oly shoes. I'm so happy.0

I love mine. Which ones did you go with?0 -
The only "gear" I have is my own speed rope and rolls upon rolls of tape. My wrists suffer on the heavy stuff so I wrap them up good and tight.
Shoes - Addidas Adizero. It's a zero gravity shoe. A few of our members wear the Vibrams, a few the Innov-8's. I've got a wide foot so I can't just order a shoe online
I have compression socks - wore them once for sore ankles and shins. Now I also keep a knee brace in my bag. Oy, the joys of getting old and creaky! I think I spend more time preventing injuries than WOD'ding!0 -

DoWins. They haven't helped me snatch any better though.0 -

LOVE my New Balance Minimus. I also have 2 pairs of Nike free trainers and a pair of Pendlay women's O-lift shoes, which are fantastic for when you want to get serious about your lifting. I got them before moving up to Nashville knowing I was going to be doing this Olympic lifting class (yay for early Christmas present).
As for cold weather gear, I grew up in Idaho and New York so I pretty much only throw on the sweats and long sleeve shirt over my regular workout gear for getting to the gym. I keep them on while warming up, and by the time I hit the WOD i'm stripped down to my usual wod gear.0 -

Sigvaris makes AWESOME compression socks that keep my shins warm in the winter, but more importantly make my calves and shins feel a million times better on high rep box jump and double under days.0
