New to Paleo

Options
Hi everyone,

I am new to Paleo, I started last Saturday unoficially because I have not read the books. I've been on some o the different websites and I am very excited to begin, as nothing else has worked for me and I truly need to lose weight and gain my health back. I have hashimoto and my joints hurt a lot and I have zero energy and 4 kids.

What has worked for you? can you share any tips?

BTW I saw on one of the websites that people were posting their progress reports, I thought that was cool, we should do that here.

Welcome, Mighty125! I'm a Primal follower (which varies from Paleo in some of the details), but if you're interested in lots of info on that, you can find it all at marksdailyapple.com.

But there are many Paleo folks on here as well, and I'm sure they have plenty of Paleo-specific resources to share as well.

    :)

    Hi

Welcome to eating as your body was designed to eat.

What has worked for me is not being afraid of fat.

In fact, on weeks I eat tonnes of fat, and very few carbs and moderate protein, I lose weight faster, have more energy for workouts, think better, breathe better.

    Do not fear healthy fats.

Healthy fats are anything that existed in your grandma's pantry 75 years ago or more. Lard, Tallow, Butter, Cream, Olive Oil, Palm Oil, Coconut oil, etc...

Congrats on going Paleo! You will LOVE it. My wife and I have been Primal for 20 week now, and in that time I have lost just over 90lbs and my wife has lost over 55lbs. There are a ton of websites out there for you to find great info, but here are some of the few that I research the most and rely on the heaviest. There is a lot of info here, but the first three links are basic outlines of the diet and why it works.

You can also watch the documentary "Fathead" for a great source of info to start off with.

If you have any questions about it, please let me know and I will be happy to help you out. There is a LOT of info in those links and even after doing extensive research in it for the past five months I am still learning more about our bodies every day.

Welcome to a whole new world! Eating this way has changed my life. I was diagnosed pre-diabetic back in March and changed my lifestyle shortly afterwards. Currently I am 42 pounds lighter and stronger and leaner than I have ever been. Stick with it, Good luck and I wish you all the best! You deserve it! That's what I always tell myself =)

Tip: For me I had to dive in head first (i.e. get rid of all the junk, sugar etc in my house) because if it's there I will eat it. Get to know your body and what you need, maybe you can go gradually, maybe you have to have a drastic change. Above all learn to listen to your body and what it is telling you. =)

I don't track my food on a regular basis. About one week a month I check to make sure the ratios are right, or I will track for a bit if I make changes to how I eat to again make sure everything is good.

At the end of the day though, if you are cutting out sugar, grains, and processed foods, you can eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full. Listen to your body, it is a remarkable piece of craftsmanship, and will tell you what you need.

    Have a blessed day!

great! thanks for the links and the great tips. I am so excited, the mail man just arrived with my books. I ordered the paleo diet, The Paleo Solution and Paleo Comfort Foods. I am leaning towards Primal though because of the 80/20 rule.

I will make it my first official day tomorrow. I hope I can do this!

I do track all my food, because while eating Primal/Paleo does tend to keep daily calories in a reasonable place (but be careful with the quantities of the nuts and nut butters!), tracking helps me to stay focused on keeping my daily macronutrient ratio at 15% carbs, 30% protein, 55% fat. And make sure to change those goals on MFP, so it will show you the correct daily targets!

I'm also more Primal than Paleo.

If you are on facebook there is a ton of groups you can join. Amongst my favorite:

    https://www.facebook.com/PaleoParents
    https://www.facebook.com/CivilizedCaveman
    https://www.facebook.com/TheFoodLovers
    https://www.facebook.com/pages/All-Things-Primal/249851115058651

    http://nomnompaleo.com/
    http://fastpaleo.com/

It's great because they continually update statuses with suggested recipes - never at a loss for what to cook for dinner or lunch!

I guess I'm not THAT new to primal/paleo, but I am still figuring things out! Glad to be here.

I tend to follow the Primal Blueprint as defined by Mark Sisson, but I must say the big eye-opener for me was learning so much more about how the body processes food, and as a result understanding WHY certain foods are not healthful for you! The fact-finder in me LOVES all of that information! ;-)

My other recent lesson was how much good quality protein has improved my energy and workouts. I recently started eating poultry again (after years of just being a pescetarian). WOW! I'm looking forward to trying more new things, and really getting my health and body composition to the most healthful levels ever!

I also have Hashimoto's also and the only thing that has helped me is to give up the grains and legumes and severely limit nightshades and dairy.

I'm one month into Paleo & have lost 9.5 lbs! I love it and find it a pleasant way to live! You have been given great links, so I won't elaborate on that. I look forward to the support from this group. I joined here to log food for at least a while to be sure I'm getting the right nutrient balance. It's easy to go too light on calories while on Paleo.....at least in my initial experience.

If anyone would like to add me as a friend, please feel free. It's nice to have a group of friends following the same plan.

Wow! After reading all of these comments I'm super excited to start this new lifestyle!
Tomorrow is going to be my first day, I'm going to start eliminating grains and such from my diet first then dairy.
