Shock Effect?

Last night there was a thread asking what you had too much of on Thanksgiving. Most comments were what you'd expect; "dessert, alcohol, laziness, football", etc. Then some man comes along and answers with, "masterbation".
What are your thoughts- cool? not cool? I'm sure it won't surprise anyone to know that I don't think that's cool.

I'd only care that it was mis-spelled :laugh:0

lol.
But to the OP though, as long as that was all he said, I wouldn't care. It'd be different if he were to go into detail as to what he did. But a simple, one word answer?? No big deal.0 -

By even saying that much, though, the thread can take a whole new direction because others start commenting about that.0 -
It was relevant because like Turkey, it can make you sleepy.0

While he may have found it relevant, and even though it may be a true statement, do you really think it's cool to just throw out there?0 -

Threads on forums will almost always take on a new direction, regardless of topic. I've seen it happen often and I've been around different web forums since 2003.
I mean, I'm betting you don't like it because you find it offensive or inappropriate in some way?? You have every right to feel that way. But just as an example, in a few threads you've used God and the Bible. There are some people who will find this offensive, and may state that it is off topic to cite the Bible in certain threads. But I bet that will not stop you from saying it, correct??
*kitten* is nothing to hide. Perhaps it is nothing to flaunt-- hence why I stated that as long as he doesn't go into detail, he's fine. But if he wants to state the word and nothing else, I see no issues with it. You do see an issue with it, that is fine... but I don't.0 -

Yes, in groups that welcome discussions religious in nature, I will speak about God. I try not to go there in a public forum unless that's already the direction the discussion is going.
So, you're okay with people saying anything just for the shock effect?0 -

I was joking.
But to the original topic, I don't find what he said all that shocking. While I didn't find it hilarious, I cracked a half-smile. While the humor might be sophmoric and in bad taste, this website is intended for adults and I think most people can handle a masterbation joke.0 -
I would have corrected the spelling error!
Otherwise, I don't care. If people let themselves get spun up over stupid small things, that's their problem.0 -

So, there's nothing that someone could say that would get you "spun up"?0 -
As OP of the thread you were talking about, I thought it was funny. I worded it so as to leave it open to not just what you had too much to eat on Thanksgiving. I was not offended in the least and if I hadn't gotten distracted I would have most likely made worse comments.
I understand and respect your opinion though.0 -
Im very very hard to offend,I dont care what people say. words are just words to me and only have the power I give them.0

My guess is that not many people were offended by it. I was using that thread as an example, though. I've seen many threads go that way, and for some of us it just "ruins" it, if we don't want to read crude/distasteful comments. If I can tell by the title of the thread where it's going, then I don't join the discussion. I don't appreciate it much when it's in a thread where a good conversation is going, because then I won't return to the thread. That's totally me, and I realize that.
I was just wondering what other people think of the shock effect some go for, and where others draw the line.0 -

^^^^This! I don't find the word or concept offensive. But I don't offend or shock easily. As to why he chose to throw that out there, I don't know. I try to remember that there are many people from all walks of life with many different personalities and values. Not everyone will conform to my expectations. That's perfectly ok.0 -

I don't see anything shocking about it.0 -

The person who used the horrible "M" word; his goal was to get you (or someone, anyone) "spun up". My question: Why do you give people like that such power over you?0 -
Was it the "Chit chat" forum? Pretty much anything goes in there, so no it wouldn't shock/surprise me. It might be a little unsettling to a newbie, though. :laugh:0

It takes a lot, especially on an online message board. It's the internet.0 -
The way you described it, it sounds juvenile. I wouldn't worry about it though.0

sorry I dont know what the debate is about to busy masterbating :devil:0

what's wrong? *kitten* is fun!!
*end troll*0 -
I think it's juvenile but harmless. It's not like he was saying he's killing kittens or something. Just a normal human activity.0

*kitten*... The one thing I didn't overindulge in during thanksgiving... knew i forgot something! seriously. its not a big deal. we're all adults here. dont like it, skip it, dont read it/focus on it.0
-
That's the problem with the internet, can't control who you're talking to. Well, it's more a problem for those who try. I do find the shock joke funny 9 times out of 10. Very little shocks me, and I don't believe anyone has a right to not be offended.0
-
People choose to be offended by stuff. No one makes that choice for you.
Personally, nothing in this world offends me. If I don't like what someone says, then I have every right to ignore it, debate it/talk about it, and move on.0 -
I was just trying to get people to discuss thoughts on shock effect. Do you use it? So, Kimmy, nothing is off limits/offensive to you in written or spoken words?0

I gotcha. I mean I practice restraint, out of respect for others. I swear like a sailor, but I definitely don't do it at school, work, in front of family (unless they do, too ), etc.
To answer your question, no, I don't try to purposely shock people. Personally I find that to be really childish. That's stuff I did as a teenager to make someone mad. Not something I do as an adult. But honestly, I don't find the topic of *kitten* offensive/off limits/shocking, so that's just me. And you are correct! Nothing is off limits or offensive to me, whether written or spoken. Now that doesn't mean I go around discussing anything and everything...there are some things I don't like to talk about. So I just avoid those topics/don't partake in them.0
