This debate is divided by those that smoke dope and those that don't. I'm sure that pedophiles would like to make kiddie porn legal and meth addicts would like to see meth legalised. Doesn't make it a good argument.
Sadly this is how most people think. "What would help ME directly". It's too bad, but this is the reality of it.
Thankfully, some people can see the bigger picture. We didn't have to rely strictly on black people to fight for basic human rights; strictly on women to fight for the right to vote; strictly on sick people fight for health care; strictly on alcoholics to end prohibition... catch my drift?

I don't smoke pot, but due to the fact that enough names were gathered on a petition (which the right to petition is the peoples' check on the government) saying that it should be legalized, then yes it should. We have the right to petition to tell the government what we want done in the country because it affects us. If we have no right to petition, then we may as well be living under the rule of a dictator. So don't generalize people that far, there are other reasons than "I just really wanna get high"0 -

Recently, the White House rejected several "We The People" petitions to legalize and regulate marijuana in a similar manner as tobacco and alcohol. The most popular among them received nearly 75,000 signatures.
Wow !! 75,000 signatures? There are 307 Million people in the U.S. That represents less than a hundredth of a percent of the population.0 -

Like I said before, I don't care if marijuana is legalised or not as long as the same laws that are imposed on drinkers are imposed on "stoners". Relax. Toke up. Have a double stuffed oreo.
Even from this thread, there are people who choose not to smoke, but still believe it should be exactly that - a choice. It's not really fair to categorize marijuana use with pedophilia, because that directly affects a) another person and b) a minor. Marijuana also, unlike meth, has even been shown to have medicinal properties (I mean I have some pretty out-there feelings on hard drugs too, but that's for another thread.) Meth has a good argument against it, marijuana is illegal because cotton farmers lobbied against it in the thirties and people are still scared by "reefer madness".
I absolutely think there should be laws that come with the legalization and regulation of marijuana - that people should be of a certain age to use it, and that one should not be allowed to operate a vehicle while under the influence. Responsibility is key here

The petition gaining 75,000 signatures was meant to bring the issue to the government's attention, not actually for them to legalize/regulate it right away, so that's a bit of misinformation there. It's to show the government that marijuana legalization is an issue that the American public would like it to consider and discuss - unfortunately, it received a pretty canned and politically-safe response instead of the one that the public intended.0 -

There's no reason for it to be illegal. As long as the same rules were applied to it as alcohol and other things that impair you, then what's the point in making it illegal? Time could be better spent busting REAL criminals, than someone smoking pot.0

I don't smoke it, but like many on here, me not smoking it doesn't affect you, nor does you smoking (or not) affect me. But I do agree that it shouldn't be illegal (it is here in the UK too). I have visited Amsterdam often enough (as a non-smoker) to see the effects of decriminalisation...and all I see is a city of tolerance, respect, fewer social problems and greater social cohesiveness.
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that's because they're allowed to smoke weed, and is probably due to their religions (or not), cultural, whatever ethos, but the weed certainly hasn't had a negative impact. And nor is everyone off their face (the only ones who are are we Brits or whoever on their stag and hen weekends).
So, it's no more harmful than booze or cigarettes, certainly causes less hostility/violence/injury than alcohol (and I think I can speak with authority on that coming from the West Coast of Scotland, unfortunately) so while I choose not to, I am FOR the right to. Then I can if I want, or can not if I want. As can you.0 -
There was a recent study done that shows states that have legalized weed have fewer car accidents. They also have less people turning to alcohol because weed is easier to obtain. I'll do a little searching later and post a link...I'm out of time now...unless anyone else has it handy
