Anyone in the group really want to take part in this challenge but has NO CLUE (or only half a clue) what their plan should be?

Now, I'm not an expert - I don't even have abs showing myself - but I'd be happy to throw out suggestions, as would many others in this group who likely have MORE experience than me and can throw out some info. Stuck on a workout plan? What to eat? Ask here!

I think a good starting point is nerdfitness.com - If you don't have a plan, you should seriously check this site out. Steve has some great advice. I recommend signing up for his mailing list (you only get emails when he publishes) - but when you sign up, you get 3 emails over a week showing you some good starting articles. I'll share a view below.

My thoughts on a dietary level? If you fix WHAT you eat, the calorie thing usually falls into place. Select real, nutritious food, and you will find it is satisfying and FILLING :)

I really want to try going Paleo but I just don't think I can do it. I am from a huge italian family and pasta is a huge part of our diet. I had my family switch to whole grain to make it healthier but to go paleo I'd have to give it up totally. And I just love things like rice and couscous

Is it easy to do? Any suggestions?

    Here's a good read on paleo: http://nerdfitness.com/blog/2010/10/04/the-beginners-guide-to-the-paleo-diet/
Steve is pro paleo, but he also gives the issues people take with it.

First, I don't know if I believe paleo is the ONLY way. (Heck, I can't even say first hand that it is A way as I'm in the process!) I also know many people who are not paleo and are in great shape, strong and look fab. I picked it because I honestly don't like the way grains make me feel - I feel lethargic and blah and gross. They don't suit me well. Dairy doesn't seem to bother me, but I have it cut for now.

I basically spent the month of November transitioning to paleo, making small sustainable changes. I didn't miss dairy at all, but cutting grain was challenging. This sounds odd because I don't like how it makes me feel, but grains are such a big part of a lot of people's diets it was hard to cut it out. I've been about 98% paleo for a week and half. Some others have just gone cold turkey to paleo - I just know I couldn't have done it like that :)

My plan? Stick to this 98% paleo through December. In January my gym is doing a paleo challenge, and I plan to go strict/100% (minus the fact that I can only afford grain fed meat). After January, I plan to slowly introduce certain foods back into my diet and see how they effect me (helllllo, greek yogurt!) My gym actually recommends having a strict 30 days and then adding foods back if you'd like and they don't bother you. I don't really know anyone there who stays strict forever. Our coaches really encourage those who are interested in paleo to find what works for you - the train of thought being that you should spend about a month strict to really get everything else out of your system, give you time to adjust, and then truly see how other foods affect you.

Thank you so much, this really helped me
Also it helped me realize that although I don't really drink milk unless I put a bit in cereal, I do eat a lot of dairy! Greek yogurt is a staple... along with cheese
I could never give up cheese
I was going to try do do the whole no rice/no pasta/no dairy thing for a month to see how it went but now I'm realizing it just might not be right for me. I'm settling for lowering my carbs from 45% to 35% and increasing my protein..

We'll see how this goes. I am really focusing on changing my body composition, I only have about 10 lbs left I want to lose so I'm starting to lift heavy and seeing if that helps me

I'd also like to throw out that I honestly don't really think carbs are evil. I eat about 150ish carbs a day - fruits and veggies are loaded with them. I just don't think I need 400g of carbs a day (okay I'm exaggerating, but you get the idea). What it really boils down to for me is that grain specifically just doesn't seem to settle well with my body.

    Yeah I understand:)
I have my goal set for 140 g of carbs a day but If I go over because I eat a lot of fruits and veggies, I won't stress it.

It's also super hard because I live on a college campus and while I have my own kitchen, I don't always have the time to go home and cook.
