"Skip the Treadmill, Pick Up the Weights
Karas says cardio can actually cause petite women to gain weight because it increases their appetites. Instead, petite women should focus on strength training, which fulfills their cardio needs while also increasing their caloric burn, enhancing their posture and strengthening and flattening their core muscles."
Just curious if anybody focuses on weights more than cardio and if it really does make a difference?
I personally have always loved doing videos like 30 Day Shred and such with both in it or stuff like Turbo Jam/Tae Bo where it's mostly cardio. But with the new year I'm kind of replanning my strategy and I'm torn about what to do.

I guess that I tend to do more strength training than cardio. I just started back to exercising, however, I own a Total Gym (the one endorsed by Chuck Norris and Christy Brinkley - I purchased it from QVC) and use it on Mon/Wed/Fri and do a Abs/Butt/Thighs video Tues/Thurs in the mornings then before dinner, I try to do 30 or 60 mins of treadmill or elliptical. I have everything I need at home. I also use my Pilates machine too (also from QVC) LOVE IT! I'm just not a gym rat as I always have to figure out where my kids are going to go while I work out.0

Meh, I just do what I feel like. I am not one to get into the weight training, it doesn't give me the same satisfaction as a cardio workout, regardless of science! lol
I feel HAPPY after a tiring walk or swim. I just get tired and bored lifting weights.
Having said that - I have just started Jillian's ripped in 30 to incorporate a bit more strength training, but that and a pump class is about as far as I can get into it.0 -
Oh, yes, this is the guy that wrote the Petite Advantage.
Personally, I think lifting weights is awesome. I think cardio is awesome, too. I think a mixture of both is the best answer.
I also think its good no matter what size you are.
And the whole "increases the appetite" as a reason to NOT get in a work out seems a little off to me. Yes, hard work increases the appetite! Hiking increases the appetite but that doesn't mean I'm not going to do it!
Eating properly and eating 100-200 extra calories on a day when you work out hard and burn a lot of calories seems like a good thing. And then there's plenty of people who eat back ALL their exercise calories and lose weight just fine.
I don't know about this guy.
I had such good results with 30 Day Shred and Ripped in 30 and I'm totally NOT knocking the strength training. I'm just saying ditching cardio completely isn't necessary. (plus its good for your heart)0 -

Me, too. I HAVE to do videos or else I won't stick with them if it's longer than 15 minutes. I get bored so quickly. I'm looking into some videos (like Chalean Xtreme and Bob Harper's one video) that are based more on weight lifting. I did part of Bob's video and that felt really really good. I was so sweaty by the end and felt so ... worn out. lol0 -

I think it was more about cardio increasing the appetite waaay more than weight lifting. I know it's true for me. I feel like I could eat a cow after a cardio workout and usually have to be careful not to eat too much while I don't feel that hungry at all after weight lifting.0 -
Oh, I see what you mean. I have to agree that I don't feel like eating at all after a weight workout. Whereas after enough cardio, I'm scrambling for my protein shake.0

Hmm. I don't know... I'm a little stockier in build, so I'm always afraid I'll beef up too much. It seems like when I drink a lot of water during cardio, I'm much less hungry once it's over because I'm hydrated.0
