lean body weight or of body weight? That's 115 grams vs. 150 grams. I make 115 easy, but don't always hit 150.

ETA: I'm bulking right now.

Actually, I'd do 1 gm per pound of GOAL body weight, since you're bulking.

Well, I've always understood it as total body weight...presumably for bulking. You know I'm leaning, and I try to get over the lean but under the total. I haven't lost but one pound of lean muscle in the last 22 lbs. So, it sounds as though total body weight or higher is right for bulking. Funny, we have the same LBM and height. :-)

From what I've read it's technically per lb of LBM. This makes sense for people with higher body fat. As you get leaner the two numbers will be getting closer anyway.

I don't think you would hinder your gains by "only" getting 1g/lb of LBM personally.
  • what about when cutting? My LBM is about 96 pounds vs 120 bw. 96 is easier to get xD was just curious if the same applies?

I would personally try to get at least 96 grams...but what difference does it make if you go over? As long as calorie goals are met, and min. protein goal is met, I wouldn't think it matters that much.

You will see varying recommendations on this.

Per most of the more well-educated posters on bb.com in the nutrition section, and the stickies there, 1g/lb LBM should be sufficient as a MINIMUM INTAKE.

Lyle McDonald will recommend between 1 and 1.5g/lb LBM based on his posted articles.

As ChrisDavey mentions, as you get leaner the g/lb lean and g/lb bodyweight numbers will approach each other and the difference between the two becomes small enough to not worry about.

Also, obese people will have a lower protein req as they have a better chance at hanging on to lean mass, but this doesn't concern OP at all.

I actually aim for 1.20 x my body weight, but that's just me.

I've read quite a bit on this and the consensus seems to be that the body is capable of synthesizing 1.4g / lb of LBM. Now since it's hard to know exactly what your LBM is, I just shoot for 1.4g /lb of body weight and call it a day. If I go over, as someone else mentioned, so what? It's not going to hurt me, my body just won't absorb it. If you're getting at least 1g/lb I think you'll be fine. The 1.4 just seems to be the maximum useful amount.

The rule of thumb I've read is 1g per pound of LBM. I, personally, hit 1g per lb on non-workout days and 30-40g more than that per day on workout days.

Somedays I struggle to get that 120 grams actually xD A protein shake or meat just isn't always what I am craving. I think I asked thta looking for an excuse honestly. Can't be doing that!!!

When cutting I would be going closer to the high side rather than the lower. Protein being helpful for retention of LBM and all. Better to have too much than not enough I figure. Don't want you're muscles falling off

Oh & if you don't want a shake/meat. Try the protein sludge mixes. Seriously tasty desserts that help me reach my protein targets. LOVE em!
  • Just googled protein sludge.... what have i been missing out on?! lol!
found a protein doughnut recipe too... will no longer be under on protein i think ;D

It's nice to have such a high calorie goal. Makes getting protein from just cheese possible...

I'm with Sunshine here. Not a huge peanut butter fan. I only like it on sandwiches with large quantities of jelly.
  • I have to avoid it because I go from putting a tablespoon on my toast, to shoveling it in with said spoon xD No control! Love PB too much :D

    That's ok then. And understandable!

I'm much better with self control now except for when I get the legit natural stuff from the health food store. There is crack in it for sure

    From a sticky at BB.com...

    - If you guess your bodyfat is AVERAGE = 1-1.25g per pound TOTAL weight
    - If you KNOW your bodyfat = 1-1.5g per pound LEAN weight

I don't know my body fat %, so I aim at AT LEAST 1g/body pound. But I usually get around 1.5 per body pound.

I usually make protein bars, protein cookies, etc... but never tried the sludge! I never knew it existed so thanks for sharing :)
