For the ladies with PCOS, how many carbs do you eat a day?

I want to eventually hit 20 if possible. But I don't see how that is possible lol. What can you eat for that amount of carbs? Even a green pepper is 6 carbs.

  • One thing I've seen to be really good when on a low carb diet is cheese. I eat a lot of cottage cheese, celery, cucumbers, lettuce, all with pomegranate vinaigrette. Repetition will occur a lot on this but my goodness it works all too well.

After years of testing different methods out i have found it is not so much about the number of carbs, but of the quality. Buy a good glycemic index book and classify the things you eat. Once in a blue moon eat something off the "high" list. Once a day or two eat something off the "medium" list and knock your self out on the "low" list as long it is a whole food that is nutritious.

I actually used to keep a list in my purse of "good" and "bad"...have given it to my mom and found a GI index for my iphone

    Examples:

High: Corn syrup (the devil, and hides in everything including ketchup = red corn syrup)
cantelope, pineapple, mango, cereals, white bread, white rice, pasta, chips, cooked carrots, couscous, cornmeal...etc

Med: brown rice, whole wheat bread, wheat pasta, bran cereals, etc.

Low: apples, oranges, peaches, broccoli, pickles, cucumber, avocados...etc

here is just one site that offers printable lists. http://www.lifetimefatloss.com/glycemic-index-list-of-foods.html
There are a million more out there.

I love cheese and cottage cheese, but these can mess with your cholesterol (and with PCOS we have enough trouble with that anyway) plus if you are even mildly lactose intolerant (like me) that takes that entire category out of commission, so it is good to have alternatives

    Good luck!

Do you mean 20g per meal, or 20g for your entire day?

You definitely want to consider talking with a registered dietician who can work in conjunction with your physician(s) regarding this. A daily total of 20g of carbohydrates is extremely low and should only be followed under the advice of the healthcare practitioners (dieticians with them)....

I'm supposed to stick to 20 a day of NET carbs per the RE. Usually I'm around 50g net carbs but I try to get some high intensity exercise in to balance that out.
