When did you know that you were going through the menopause (or peri menopause)?

Did you have any symptoms that made you suspect or did you know what to expect?

Were you the same age as your Mother/Grandmother? xx

I started having night sweats in 2003 when I was 44, but my periods were not irregular until about 2007. I am now 53 and still having a period from time to time, and hot flashes. I can only hope it ends soon, this makes my 9th year of peri-menopause.
  • OMG! 9 years! Have you had a blood test to confirm that you are still in peri menopause or in menopause?

Irregular periods and some hot flashes/night sweats. After about two years my periods stopped all together for a year... then one more just to remind me of what I was missing. None since (about 3 years, I think), but my internal thermostat is still broken. Sometimes I hot flash to this day, and I can only snuggle with my honey for so long... then I get too hot! He likes heavy blankets and I like to kick them all off!!! LOL
  • I've been having irregular periods for way too many years (like 10) where I would skip the odd month, longer times between, etc. Finally it had gone down to months between.

It was the hot flashes that let me know though. Couldn't ignore them LOL! I have a window AC unit in my house, and during the summer months I'd be sitting at my desk which was next to it, I'd roll my chair over and literally put my face in the cold flowing air.

Last period was in May 2010. Hot flashes started in August of 2010. Since then, little sleep, no memory and weight gain. Fun, Fun!

I started having horrible night sweats at first. I think I was 45. Then out of the blue, during the middle of summer and while I was plagued with hives (induced by heat!), I started having hotflashes every 10 minutes! To top that off I was camping when it started. lol I got on estradiol and it all stopped. Now I'm 50 and I found out that I have a genetic mutation that causes blood clots so no more estrogen for me. I was scared to death to go off it. So far, no night sweats at all but the hotflashes are horrible. At least its winter so it's easy to cool down for now. I'm terrified for summer to arrive!

I found out 2 days ago. I had been having night sweats, I had a blood test and thought it was glandular fever as my partner has just had it, and I was stunned and shocked when my doc told me I was menopausal. He was suprised I had been having regular periods all this time! I started getting hives in September, my doc told me he thouhgt the hives were due to an allergy to oestrogen due to 2 months of taking the pill. I then gained 30lb between sept and oct last year very suddenly.

My Mum never went through this due to a hysterectomy, my aunty died in her 40s of ovarian cancer and my Nan's periods continued into her 50s so I was very suprised!!!
  • I started with hot flashes occasionally when I was 41 then periods started getting closer together. I was always a 30-32 day cycle, it started at 27-28 days. Maintained that until about two years ago at 43. Cycle started getting 25-32 days, hot flashes occasionally but it was blamed on my thyroid. Now am at 45 cycle is 21-32 days, lasts for 5-7 days, spots in the middle occasionally and the night sweats which started about 6months ago are nightly. Still no hot flashes and only an occasional mood swing. I am however dealing with a fluid retention that fluctuates daily between 5-10 lbs with an extra 5lbs of fluid hanging around for good measure. At yearly physical doctor said, welcome to menopause.

Not sure when my grandmother did. But my mom was 55 although I started having night sweats at 37 and went to ask my Ob/gyn who did a simple blood test and told me I was perimenapausal. (sp?) By 40 I had sweats night and day. One day I kept track of them and I had 46 just while I was at work one day. And by that point I had no idea when I would get my period. Every other month, skip three or four months, two in one month. Between 42 and 46 it was worse and I was very craby & moody like never before in my life... I had never had pms and mostly had pretty easy periods. In September the year I turned 46 my only sister and beloved friend died from AML - that month was the last time I ever got my period. I find that interesting. Did my body know somehow that she had died and that I was grieving? Now, 6 years later - I have sweats - a couple every few days. Every few weeks I may have one day where I have 6 or 8 sweats in one day but not too often anymore. Its all good. I have found losing or maintaining my waist line a lot harder. I have to do twice as much exersize just to stay the same... But I am pretty healthy and happy to still be among the breathing.

My periods started to play up. Ironically, it started off as every other month and then suddenly they ceased altogether. The hot flushes were a real tell-tale sign too.
