Is grass fed a MUST??

Do you HAVE to eat grass fed meat? I ordered ghee today, so I am going tot ry that, but the meat I would have to order and it is pretty expensive to do that. It's also a pain to have to order it online, rather than pick it up at the store. Will I get the same results if i do not eat grass fed?

    Good question. I know personally..I dont buy grass fed beef. And as far as ghee...grew up with the stuff...hated it...probably could make my own..but ick..

    Yea I don't like ghee as much either, I use olive oil in place of butter for a lot of things, or a mixture of olive oil and regular butter.

    I've been just getting regular fresh meats at the grocery also without seeking out grass fed yet, but I am looking now, and if I see any I'll look how the price stacks up.

    Ghee is just clarified butter. The impurities are strained out so it has a higher smoking point than regular butter.

    The reason grass-fed (and free range) animal products is preferred is that grain-fed animals have significantly higher omega 6 content in their fat. Omega 6 is an inflammatory agent. Grass-fed has a much better omega3-to-omega6 ratio. Plus, it tastes the way is should. Grain-fed meat has a different flavor.

    The general rule of thumb is: if you use grass-fed, then enjoy it in all of it's fatty goodness. If you need to use grain-fed, then buy the leanest cuts possible, and cook it in an omega3-rich oil (pastured butter, coconut oil, EVOO, etc.)

  • I love ghee. Yummmm.

    We can't afford grass fed free range right at this moment. So as pp mentioned we buy lean cuts of meat. All the impurities from their diet/hormones/antibiotics are stored in teh animals fat. You can still buy fattier meat but trim the fat.

    I wouldn't say ALL - I'd say MOST. That's another reason we strongly encourage eating grass-fed, organic livestock.

    But your point is still valid - if you cannot afford grass-fed, you can still avoid most of the toxins and inflammatory agents of grain-fed by buying lean, trimming off remaining fat, and cooking in a high-omega3 oil.

    I eat grass fed butter (Kerrygold) and I buy half of a grassfed steer from the rancher. You can try to find someone in your area and you can share with a friend also. After paying the rancher and the butcher, I pay about $7 per pound total for the processed cuts. We've had a drought in Texas so my steer is not heavy enough yet! Have to wait until May...

    You could make your own Ghee by just skimming the milkfat off of a simmering pot of Kerrygold butter. If you want to get fancy, add some spices like garlic, fenugreek, cardamom...those are spices in Ethiopian ghee called Nitr Kibbeh...and it's heavenly. The aroma is wonderful too!

    Also, from what I've read, if you resort to supermarket beef for your meat, you should also boost your fish oil, or cod liver oil supplement a bit to help balance out the N-6 to N-3 ratio.

    I'm in this boat as well.
