Hey all !!!! Just joined about 20 seconds ago.... LOL!!! I have been fighting my weight since I've had my kids (over 22 years ago) dang baby fat just wont leave..... .... I have the metabolism of a dead sloth ... I've had tests done and I'm told I'm in the "normal" range. I watch what I eat. i've stopped working out since the gym raised it's rates and I couldn't afford it anymore. I have kidney problems (that's been cleared up for now... WOOO HOOO!!! they work !) ...
does anyone have any ideas to get my metabolism up? I've tried vit E, B and fish oils; also green tea extract. Nothing works and I've about given up hope. I've gained weight back and I'm to the point of just pigging out (I do emotional eat at times and I'm getting close to doing it again  ) ........ any advice would be greatly appreciated......

  • Hi, I have same problem, start to lose then stand still as you can see, been like this for years, been advised by others that walking may help start my metablism, so hoping to try that if our weather ever gives us a nice day, got to get on the move, maybe this will help you, hang in there and don't give up, I lost all mine by walking 10 years ago, due to surgery gained it all back and been lazy now its time to go at it again, try the walking, little bit a day, I did it mostly by just walking around the mall etc.
  • I'm with you, ladies. Lost from 250-140 over 8 years ago, and slowly see that scale creeping back up. NO WAY am I going back there. But, since trying to again do the RIGHT things, it seems that the moderate exercise and healthy eating just don't cut it. I last lost all my weight by literally "starving" myself, eating only one meal a day. Can't see doing that again. I journal EVERYTHING I eat, and exercise 3-4 days weekly. Not seeing much progress though - and - that's disheartening. Any ideas on the metabolism issue would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I have just joined myself and have noticed how challenging it has been to lose the weight. I thought of trying Jillian michaels 14 day detox to kickstart.

Welcome! You've joined a great group of folks! Counting calories should help. I'm 42 and noticed a HUGE decrease in my matabolism in the last 2 - 3 years, so now count my calories. The weight just doesn't melt away like it used to. Try to get back to working out. I've picked up a stability ball and bounce around on it every other day or so and take the stairs as much as possible. I'm thinking about yoga/stretching as well - my father lost a lot of weight just stretching each morning.

Our metabolisms slow down, because if you aren't lifting progressively heavier weights we are losing muscle. Couple that with low cal diets, binging, stress...recipe for disaster.

Weightlifting is the key, building muscle is important for everyone...and you look better too! Also when lifting weights you need to properly fuel your body to repair those muscles...cardio is NOT the answer. :)

I have this exact same problem too. Ten years ago I could just watch what I ate a little and start exercising, and the weight would just drop off me with a big thud! Not so much nowadays that I'm over 40 (almost 42.) I have done all the restricted diets out there, lost about 50 pounds, but as soon as I returned to regular eating habits, started to gain it back.

I've just recently (last six weeks) begun strength training again three days a week. I hope to see some results soon!

Detoxing is unnecessary and unhealthy. Just eat healty foods and your body will detox itself. Any weight you lose using those products just comes right back when you stop taking them.

As far as reving up your metabolism goes we have to get up and move-a lot to make the lbs go away. You should also consider lifting weights. I know what you are thinking - lift weights?! I'm no kid! But you can do it, just start off with 20 lbs or so and when that gets easy, add some more weight. You will lose weight and your bones will thank you!

Good luck, you CAN do it!
  • thanks for all the help. I use to weight lift but even that didn't help me any. I did injure my shoulder a while back so I haven't touched weights since then. I may try again but go really low to start off with, like 3-5 pounds while doing some dance workouts (at home) and go from there.

I LOVE JUST DANCING AROUND THE HOUSE, EVEN WITH MY PAIN, I CAN DO THAT FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES.

Consistency, exercising regularly, and tracking what you eat. =) IMHO I don't think there is a "magic pill" to boost metabolism. It slows down as we age. We just have to adjust our lifestyle and expectations to the slower metabolism.

Hey MamaDragon ... I just read on another site that coconut oil is a healthy fat that can help boost metabolism. Might be worth a try to swap it out for whatever fat you are currently using. =)

Oh I'm sorry what did you do to your shoulder? I severly injured mine and then had surgery to fix it. Lifting weights has made a world of difference.
  • I caused the arthritis in it to flare up so much that I couldn't even move my arm. When I lift any weights, it flares up so fast (even with low weights). I want to slowly work my shoulders up to where I can lift low weights. I'm looking into tai chi and yoga dvds and I have a book that I need to find that had some work outs with the ball that I can maybe do
