Gluten free? Adrenal support?

Firstly, are any of you gluten free? I know that gluten intolerance and celiac disease tend to go hand in hand with any type of auto immune thyroid disorders. In fact, a friend of mine has hashi's and a pituitary tumor, and after going gluten free, her thyroid levels moved into a normal range for the first time since being diagnosed. I have been gluten free in the past, but I find this a really hard step to take this time.

Another question, do you take any supplements to help with adrenal support? My cortisol levels are low thanks to the battering of stress and thyroid issues. My dr told me this SHOULD start to resolve itself as my thyroid meds start working, but if there is any supplements I can take to help this along, I'm more than happy to try!

  • Hello Emnjjsmom,

I am hashi hypo, post partum.
I could not tolerate wheat based products after birth of second child.

Got tested twice, negative for coeliac. So gluten is not the problem (pfew, it's everywhere!) but I stay well clear of wheat.
I buy fancy spelt flour and make very thin pizza base with it and I'm fine, so long as I don't over do it.
I can get away with one biscuit but generally, I keep away from the stuff, matter of habit. I have over the years fallen off the wagon and convinced myself that since I tested negative I'm fine, that it must have all been in my head. Had some wheat, got problems. So now I have well learned my lesson and I don't eat it. Feel so much better for it.

Having said that, I occasionally eat GF pitta bread but generally don't buy/eat the GF stuff alternatives, they are full of unwanted sugars and most of them contain soya which is a no-no for thyroid. There is rice cakes, oaty thins, oat cakes, corn slices and you can make oopsies.

I am not on any supplement for cortisol.
Email me directly if you want to chat about levels etc..

thyroid-disease.org.uk is a good place to find lots of info, support from people who have been there and gotten the t-shirt!

  • I decided to give gluten free -casein free to see if it will help get the weight off. After a few weeks of losing two and gaining a pound back.

I'm about 10 days into it.

Be careful with supplements. A friend recommended maca to me to increase energy levels. She is also hypothyroid. I did my own research and found that it is not recommended for those with thyroid disease as it can cause goiters. No, not really going for that look, kwim?

I am gluten free, dairy free, etc.. not losing any weight and feel like crap because I am adjusting to removal from Synthroid and transition to Armour Dessicated Thyroid. That being said, I would not recommend playing around with supplements for cortisol that your doctor doesn't approve. I have a Naturopath and although he believes I might have adrenal fatigue, he doesn't want to go there until other thyroid issues (Reverse T-3 and Hashi Antibodies) are improved.

There is a site: http/www.stopthethyroidmadness.com that talks about all this stuff and has some great ifnormation. There's also a Facebook group called Stop The Thyroid Madness - they are extremely helpful, but most of them self-medicate and I'm not brave enough for that.
  • Thanks everyone. I originally chose Armour because of the sttm site. Very informative! My dr is very holistic so I guess I will follow what he says and hope that it works soon. I'm so tired of sleeping my life away!
