I have spent the morning trying to figure out macros for a 30 / 40 / 30 approach.
107g of carbs seems WAY too low for me. this has been a difficult planning session
macros went well, but fiber was far too low... added some fruit to get fiber and flew over the carb limit... grrr0 -
macros. wow. i am so not there yet. i am solely calorie counting at this point. i have the mindset that the macro stuff (i'm not even certain what that is, though i think i have an idea) is for people very close to their goal and working to transform their physique. maybe i should give it a go. but i am still having discipline troubles just staying under calories, so i don't think i'm ready.
but who knows? it could be just the catalyst i need.
hmmm...
will think on this some more.
good luck figuring yours out this month! for fiber, could you just add some wheat germ to oatmeal or cereal or something? would that be helpful or no good?0 -
The only macro that reaaaally matters is protein intake while dieting. Dieting tends to cause you to metabolize muscle along with fat but studies have shown this can be minimized/prevented by eating at least 1.5 grams of protein per KG of lean body weight (you can use Ideal body weight if you don't know your lean).
For me at 5'6" that would be
Hamwi Based Calculations: 117 pounds for a small frame, 130 pounds for a medium frame, and 143 pounds for a large frame.
and my lean based on my trainers caliper measurements is 126 and I'd say I have a small-medium frame.
So for me its about 86 grams of protein a day. I try to shoot a little higher (like 95-100) to give myself wiggle room but often miss. Then you can fill in the rest with fat and carbs. You also need a certain amount of dietary fat but I personally have nooooo trouble getting my fat in so I don't worry about it.0 -
And my goals for Feb are -- keep my calories down a little better (hmm I think this was my goal for january too...) and increase my daily activity so I can lose 2-3 lbs of fat this month. I really dialed up the activity during December and even though I ate a LOT I was losing pretty well. Activity dropped a bit in January and so did my losses. Try to do at least 1 run per week.
Also...i should probably see a doctor or PT about my foot. Every time I run on it or walk a lot, it starts to hurt in the same place. Feels better after a few days and then as soon as I do something on it it hurts again. I'm a little worried that I'm re-injuring something or not letting a fracture heal or god only knows.0 -
I want to lose something also but will be happy if i don't gain because for me February means becoming a non smoker!
Day one done!
fyi: nicotine gum is GROSS!0 -

Being a nonsmoker will be so awesome! And think of all that extra money you'll have to spend on weight loss stuff!
At least if the nicotine gum is gross you will want to go off it soon.
Anyway I'm very excited for you!0 -
WA, good luck with kicking the smoking habit. I've heard that nicotene is as addictive as crack, so I know it'll be tough, but you can do it!
Tameko, you're so right about the importance of protein. I posted a topic about this a while back. Once I realized that you have to do more than just count calories but also watch protein intake, it was a turning point for me. I try to always get within 10 grams of the protein goal every day and I feel better, I'm not as hungry all the time, I've built more muscle, and it's helped me keep the weight off.0 -
Thanks for the support ladies:flowerforyou: .
I'm starting day 3 and I'm feeling pretty good. I believe when I make it through the weekend I'll be fine. Work keeps me so busy that I don't have time to think about smoking but the weekend has always been where I've lost it before.
Happy Friday and have a great weekend!

I noticed that if I don't eat a good amount of protein in a meal my energy level actually drops and I feel inclined to eat more. which sucks because I honestly do like to eat a nice veggie sandwich once in a while. Or some french toast.
V - come back over the weekend and tell us where you're at! If you ever get the urge to smoke sit down at the computer and MFP instead!0 -
I agree that getting used to having calories on target is the first idea to get used to. I also agree that protein is a good focus. I eat plenty of fats and carbs, just need to increase the protein.0

I am struggling with calories. I do ok stopping myself around 1700-1800 calories but that's hardly ANY deficit unless I work out.0

Hi Ladies,
Hope everyone had a great weekend ...yea Giants and that your week is off to a good start. My week is killer with meeting every night through Thursday. I don't know how often I'll make it to the gym this week so I'll be dusting off some of my dvd's. I don't want to start slacking.
Enough about this yucky week and on to the good news...I made it through the weekend WITHOUT smoking.
Thank you all for your support and I'll keep checking in and let you know how I'm doing. :flowerforyou:

Congratulations, V! Sounds like you've given cigarettes a good kick to the curb.
I'm having an easy week for once this week -- just school and one evening rehearsal on Friday -- so I'll be able to get in some good workouts. I think I'll jump rope tonight.
Hope everyone is having a good week!0 -
Happy February! This is my first successful day of NOT going over my allotted calories! It may not sound like much, but it's been so hard to do!0

We all know how hard staying under a calorie goal can be so GREAT JOB!0 -
i have *got* to get back on a routine. this past two weeks have been a moderate crap fest. not total, but certainly nothing to write home about. the scale moved up for the first time in forever, and i am determined to get it back down or to not moving - no movement is better than up movement!
i'm planning to take some time today and plan out my meals - i did that at the very start. i need the regiment back. what are some of your go-to meals? especially for lunch - lunch is killer for me!
have a great day everyone!0 -

Congrats on not smoking for the weekend V! That is awesome! I know how hard it can be to kick the habit. I am an ex-smoker myself (5 years this july). Just remember that if you fall off and have one it isn't the end of the world. Just put it out and continue not smoking.0 -

Heh, just like dieting! Its not the end of the world if you have a big high calorie day! As long as you don't KEEP having them.0 -

Do you like a light lunch? I've been eating soup lately because it's low calorie and filling. Making your own it most ideal, but out of the can is okay if you watch your sodium the rest of the day.0 -
On the website everydayhealth.com there are some scrumptious recipes. The cool thing is they let you know if it's a good recipe for diabetics, heart disease and such. I'm going to try two recipes this weekend. Apple Confit Recipe - 98 cal per serving consists of apples, sugar, vanilla extract and cinnamon in a slow cooker. I think it would make a great dessert!
For a breakfast recipe, a little high on the calories (270) Oatmeal with raisins and Pecans. Basically you add raisins, cinnamon, nutmeg and pecans to your oatmeal.
yum...0 -

Yes, I have to do just that or I eat crap all week. I plan out my meals for the week every Sunday night. I occasionally veer from the plan if there's like a teacher's appreciation lunch brought in for us or I get a sudden invite to go out to dinner but 99% of the time I stick to what I've planned.
Here are my favorite filling, low calorie lunches:
1/2 cup of hummus with pretzel chips or Crunchmaster rice crackers and raw veggies
Spinach salad with a hard boiled egg and/or baked tempeh, imitation bacon bits and Vidalia onion dressing, baby carrots
Imagine Bistro Black Bean Bisque -- smooth and yummy, very filling, and lower sodium than most canned soups. You can probably find it at Whole Foods. I also eat some baby carrots or an apple with it on the side.
R.W. Garcia soy flax seed tortilla chips (they sell them at Harris Teeter), with homemade guacamole made from a small mashed avacado, medium salsa, and 1/4 cup of black beans. Like you, I don't like the "chunks" in salsa but I've found that I'll eat them when they're mixed up in guacamole. Lots of protein, fiber, and good fats and seriously yummy!0 -
heh. 270 is high calorie?
Chan - How many calories per day are you shooting for? And how many meals? because a meal for me is generally in the 6-700 range.
Ummmm so good stuff:
Rice beans meat veggies salsa -- aka make your own chipotle bowls! You could also sustitute quinoa for the rice (or for the rice AND beans) as chipotle lime quinoa is also quite tasty! cold steak tastes fine as long as its not overcooked.
Quinoa salad with beans, lime, cilantro, cumin, salt, pepper, red onion, tomato is tasty for a vegetarian option.
Pita and some chicken salad (just make the chicken salad yourself so its light, you only need enough mayo to get things a little moister, not to make a gloopy mess).
Sliced chicken breast, veggies, pita, hummus (aka one of the starbucks meal boxes)
Shredded chicken breast tossed in some frank's buffalo sauce with some veggies and pretzel slips and ranch if you want it. Or more pita!
Wow I'm surprisingly good at this considering I honestly do not know if I have ever made myself a lunch to take to work in my life. (seriously)0 -
oooohh...great suggestions, everyone, so thanks! i'll give these a whirl.
happy monday to everyone and let's all have a great week!
@v - how did weekend number two go?0 -
Hi Ladies,
I'm still fighting and today is 13 days without smoking. Made it through another weekend with only one really nasty craving...thank goodness for bubble gum.
Have a great week!

i'm doing better - still nothing to write home about, though. chin up and stay the course - we've got this!0 -
Happy Monday Ladies,
I too have had a hard time this month...I've been munching lots. I've gained 2 pounds but I WILL get back on track this week. For some good news, this is my 20th day as a non smoker!
Have a great week ladies:flowerforyou:

Congratulations, V! That takes a lot of strength. Don't sweat the 2 lbs. You'll take those off in no time. I see that you're very close to your goal weight. Unfortunately, those last few pounds do come off slowly.
I've been miserable for the last week with a nasty sinus infection and severe sore throat. I start my 2nd round of antibiotics today. I'm going to take advantage of having today off school to get some light exercise (maybe do some pilates) and lots of rest. I've continued to exercise right through this illness, even though I haven't always felt like it. I figure it's safe as long as I don't have a fever or chest congestion and it's been good for my mental well-being. I'm also trying to drink extra water and eat lots of good healthy food. Let's hope one more round of meds finally knocks this out!0
