I've been training for a half but I'm going to run another 5k on Sunday. I want to make it in under 35 mins, my personal best is 38. I KNOW I can run at a 12 min per mile pace for that long and have occassionaly during my training runs. But when race day comes up I'm always nervous and make boneheaded mistakes (ie. going too fast in the beginning and burning out). Any advice?

I'm sure you'll do fine. Take your advice and don't go out too fast. Try to stick to someone and see if you can beat one person at a time. Make sure you save some energy for the last little bit.

Try and relax and run slightly slower than your pace for the first 1k or so. Also make sure you perform a thorough warm up. This should hekp you feel in the "zone"

Lots of tips on here for 5K

Use a GPS watch or phone. Know the pace you want to keep and keep it.

Thanks for the tips, I'll check out the site! I do have a garmin but with this running club they sometimes don't allow pace watches on the course. But if they do it's an awesome tip!

looks like this is too late for this time around, but a good way to pace yourself (if you're allowed an mp3 player) is by finding a song and pacing yourself with the beats per minute of selected songs.

Thank you much! Definitly not too late as I am always looking to improve. I DID PR this 5k eep! 35:10 down from 38:40! I also did a half marathon over the weekend. Funny I found out that the "Peanut butter jelly" song kept me on a 13:25 pace haha.

I always used to vjust go out and run without warming up, but I always now warm up with soem quiet jogging somewhere for at least 15 mins just walk/run etc and make sure you are fully warmed and ready to go.

Also try make sure your palms are not bunched as a fist and shake youreself out from the arms to relax.

Good advice to get a GPS they can be set for your race pace and bleep when you are over / under.

Try to relax, its much easier said than doine and I completely agree as its something i do.

I so want to acheive my goals and I also work hard in my training only to normally fall short a bit on race day.

Does anybody elsae get a stiff neck whilst running? I believe thats nervous tension as well?

    Thanks Tim

I find that running without headphones keeps me more in tune with my speed.
I get distracted by music and tend to fall in step with the beat and loose touch with my body.
In the beginning of the year I was running with music and averaging 10:30-11:15 min miles (2-4 miles at a time)
Now I am running without music and averaging 9:15-9:59 min miles (4-9 miles at a time) in only two months

I use to think a few years ago that it was impossible to run without music but I have since learned otherwise.
Keep up the good work and nice job on your PR!
