Living with back pain for 6 years....

Options
I had injured my lower back 6 years ago while I was riding a horse. Ever since that day I have seen multiple doctors. One says take this pill, one said do this stretch, do this physical therapy, you need $75,000 surgery. WTF! I can say I tried everything except the surgery ( cannot afford/ too scared) and NOTHING worked. So trying to loose weight with a bad back is very hard.

My situation might not be as bad as yours, but I can say that on a scale from 1-10 (10 being the highest) everyday is a 7, but then there are days that shoot to a 15. All I can do is stay in bed, which doesn't help weight loss. But living with the pain for 6 years, I am use to it now. There are the days that I do cry out in pain.

Anything anybody can say to help???

You have made me feel like I am not alone. I have only been living with pain for almost a year. My pain goes from a 2 on a good day to that 15 you're talking about on others - the days when you lay in bed and cry. I do take narcotic pain medication for my back, but if it continues, I will have to learn to live with it because I don't plan on being on these meds forever.

I would not stop trying. I'll just mention some things that you didn't just in case you haven't tried these things - epidural injections (these are done in an ortho office using an x-ray machine for guidance), lidocaine or anti inflammatory patches, massage therapy, acupuncture.

Take or leave any of these ideas. Also where exactly is your pain. I have lumber pain, SI pain and coccydynia, which is pain in the coccyx, the very lowest joint of the back.

I'm having one more set of injections and if that doesn't help, I'll keep looking for new things to help.

Losing weight is definitely something that will help my pain.

Mine has been for 11 years and is usually at a 7 ..... Chiro has helped but not for more than a few hours.... I have trouble getting dr's to take me seriously about it. How did you get help? I live in Canada, so medical may be different than where you live. For losing weight, I do low impact and definitely prefer floor exercises (avoid front bending) for strength training.

I have lumbar, herniated disk. I'm not sure exactly what I have other than that. I've given up trying to figure it out because every doctor has said something different.

I have thought about getting injections, but am afraid. Doctors have suggested it to me, and the thought of a needle going in my spine freaks me out. It's been so long that I've had this pain, I just deal with it. I just accept that it will never get better. I do however, watch what I do. Sitting too long ( watching a movie) makes it act up, and I have I constantly change positions. Also if I bend over to pick something up, if it too heavy I get throbbing pain right away.

Part of the physical therapy I had done was massage. But I hurt more walking out of the office than I did walking in. I use heat pads every so often, but that's only for temporary relief. Hopefully if I shed some pounds I can feel a difference.

    Good luck!

have you ever had a MRI done? It could very well be a herniated disk like you said. I know you are afraid of back surgery, BUT ...first off- everyone is different and responds to physical therapy different. In my case, I experience the same pain as you describe, I've been to 4 chiropractors/physical therapists, been through 4 different physical therapy programs, and seen now 3 nuerosurgeons. The physical therapy, stretches, chiropractic care, pain killers only distract you. None of this works for me. My brother had a herniated disc shaved off 2 years ago (age 31 at the time) and he walked out of the hospital and was back to work in a week and back to rock climbing after a month. I'm scheduled to have the same thing done here in a few weeks. I started having pain in 2006 so, 6 years like you- and let me tell you my pain has never gone away and it won't. I'm tired if it living my life. If quality of life is lowered because of chronic back pain- then it is time to try something new! Have you gone to see a spine specialist or a nuerosurgeon? Just going to see one doesn't mean you should have back surgery- just good to get an opinion from someone other than a chiropractor or PT.
