Hashimoto's help

Greetings to all :) Figured I would introduce myself. I've been on MFP on and off for quite a while. About 4 years ago I lost 120lbs with Weight Watchers, then in 2009 I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's after gaining 20lbs in two months. (yikes). I've been able to not gain any more weight, but I just can't seem to lose.
I have an endocrinologist who refused to do anything but the 'wait and see' approach because my thyroid levels are still considered 'normal' (regardless of the fact that I have all of the terrible symptoms) I found this wonderful book called "Why do I still have thyroid symptoms..." By Datis Kharrazian - I highly recommend it if you have any questions about how and why Hashimoto's happens. I figured out that by eliminating gluten I feel much better. (less foggy and not so tired).
I was wondering if any Hashi's people out there have had any success taking any supplements? If so what kinds? if not - what kinds? (would like to avoid them)
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

    Hi :)

I was recently diagnosed with Hashi's also and my doctor wants to do the "wait & see" approach which disappoints me. She is content with my weightloss... 13lbs. over the last 3 months. My levels have come back normal. However, I am completely exhausted all the time. I get heart palpitations. I lose focus. I just want to feel better.

I will have to check out that book. I would love to know what others say about the supplements, etc.

Edited to Congratulate you on your weightloss success!!!! THAT IS OUTSTANDING!

I take a Selenium supplement just 200mcg - it helps your body convert t4 to t3 and can help lower antibody levels. Since I have Graves Eye Disease too, I've noticed that my eyes don't ache hardly at all anymore.

But other than that, I just take a daily vitamin - mostly for the vitamin D.
  • Lappleget congrats on your weight loss - fantastic!

Ladies, with all due respect if you have autoimmune thyroid disease and have hypothyroid symptoms you should be medicated. Be your own advocate and find another doctor.

I highly recommend the website stopthethyroidmadness.com

I also have hashi's, I take armour (dessicated thyroid hormone medication)and feel great! It is not a silver bullet for weight loss but I feel like *me*!

As far as vitamins/supplements I take b complex, vitamin d3, calcium with vitamin k (I am over 50) and eat 2 raw brazil nuts for selenium.

Losing weight has been an uphill battle. Everything for me at this point is trial & error!

    Thanks everyone!
I prefer to get my vitamins from natural sources as much as possible so I will totally try the Brazil nuts. And right before I came back to this page I was on stopthethyroidmadness.com - it's a wonderful page, full of information.
I have another appointment with my primary this afternoon and I will ask her about the dessicated thyroid hormone. Maybe she'll be a little more open minded then the Endo.
