How much fruit is too much fruit?

I've read some places that say more than 1 serving a day is too much, but I guess I don't know. I feel like fruit has been helping satisfy my craving for sugar lately (which is better than candy or something), but I want to make sure I'm not overdoing it. Help!

I am by NO means and expert - but our trainer says to limit it to about 2 pieces of fruit per day. They should be eaten in the morning or right before or after a workout.

I have to be honest though - If i am in between meals and won't be eating until much later - I will eat a piece of fruit rather than giving in to something non-Paleo.
  • ^^I second this^^^
  • Especially if you are trying to stay under yur macros on carbs, you really can't eat too much fruit, which is a shame. At least if i'm going to indulge in fruit, it's something that is good for me

This is how I understand it.
Fruit has been grafted and 'bred' to be juicer, more succulent and much sweeter than it originally was in the Paleo era.
We mostly all love a little sweet thing, so man has been very clever and got our fruit so sweet it's a sugar bomb.

Although it's full of vitamins and anti oxidants it's sugar load tends to negate a lot of the benefits. True it's better than sweets with no nutritional benefit, but not as healthy as vegetables.
It's probably a good transition from the standard diet of sweets to Paleo, but should be a little restricted, to a couple of times a week. It would have been a real find for a Paleo man/woman, not an everyday treat. And not as sweet either.
In my opinion, if you are going to eat it, choose the most nutritionally dense fruit to make it worth your while. Blueberries are one of my favourites for this reason.
I do love fruit, but I think of it like a real delicacy, and I thoroughly enjoy it when I indulge. It is like a special treat for me.
I have been on this Paleo 'diet' for 1 year and am now fully accustomed to this way of eating. It's best to take little steps and make small changes otherwise it may seem insurmountable. So use fruit as the pathway to the next step. At least it's not processed (I hope!).
I hope this helps, good luck!
  • I have this same problem with fruit. I have started changing out for veggies, but still crave fruits. What is an easier way to get over this. Like a sweet veggie that is juicy? Not sure what I could change out for my oranges, since those are one of my favorite fruits.
  • Glad I found the Paleo group.

I would stick to the low glycemic fruit like berries. Blue berries are my favorite. Cantaloupe in another good fruit.
Dr. Carlson says, "The old saying goes, an apple a day keeps the doctor away, it should be an apple a day and the doctor you will pay."
Stick to the low sugar fruits. And eat them in season.

I've lost 153 pounds in the past 24 months following this advise.

So happy to find a paleo group.

I know I use to live off fruit. I was pretty much eating backwards. I'd have veggies maybe twice a day and fruit maybe even up to 5 times. Now not to much. Now it's more carrots, celery and cucumber. It is a good way to transition though. Fruit is better then baked sweets.

^^ Yes, view the fruit as a dessert, or special treat.
    Love your vegetables!

My personal opinion is whatever keeps my sugar intake to under 15 per day, but that is my own preference.
