No soft drinks!

Some of you know that I have given up Dr Pepper. It was my drink of choice for 37 years!!! It was physically difficult for the first 5 days. I experienced withdrawal symptoms and headaches. But, I feel better than I have in a long time. I experienced shortness of breath and a "racing heartbeat" at least 3 times the week before giving up DP. I would be resting or trying to go to sleep when this would happen. It was not brought on by exertion. This scared me! I have not had shortness of breath OR a racing heartbeat since giving up D.P. (and Caramel Frappuccinos from Starbucks and Iced Cappuccinos from Tim Hortons). Also, on the second day I felt deprived and like the task was impossible. I knew I couldn't last that long on shear will-power. So, I replaced the unhealthy drinks with healthiER drinks. I started drinking TEA!! There are all sorts of Green teas, White teas, Oolong teas, and Black teas that are supposed to be good for you. Today is 3.5 weeks since I started and I have lost 5 pounds. I have been to the movies twice - the movies are a big deal to me! I ordered GREEN TEA at the MOVIES! They have GREEN TEA AT the MOVIES!!! I still have TRIGGERS - stress - holidays - habits that make me WANT a Dr Pepper but so far I have made it thru. I tell my husband - I really want a Dr Pepper - HELP! and he encourages me NOT to drink one. (He gave up soda in 1991!!) There is no soda in our house. He encourages me. AND, I have taken my battle to Facebook (and now to this group). So, my friends are also encouraging me. I have even inspired one or two people to give up soda as well. Getting rid of the CAUSE, having someone to talk you down off the ledge, making your battle known to the public and being an inspiration are all steps to healthy. I encourage you to get rid of the bad, pinpoint an encourager, take it public, and inspire. Please, leave any messages about soda on this board! May the force be with you.....And also with you ;-) XOXOXOXO, m.

Marci, you are amazing! And you are a very good encourager and group leader! Thank you for starting this board and reminding me of how bad soda is for us. I am now 10 days Pepsi free! Yippee! If you don't like water, try the Fruit 2 0. That's what Kevin and I drink and it seems to help because it has a slightly fruity taste. Not strong but just enough to feel like you are not being deprived of flavorful drinks. I also love tea and am starting to drink more hot tea! Perfect for this time of year! I got several tea bag sets for Christmas and am looking forward to trying all the delicious flavors!!0

I decided to give up soda, too! It's been about a month now. I was drinking at least a 2-liter of Cherry Pepsi a day. The craziest part were the withdrawls! Shortness of breath, chest tightening, headache, mood swings... It was nasty! but only lasted a week or so. Now that I'm going to the gym regularly, I get my 8 cups of water there and sip on crystal light instead of soda.
I miss my soda during dinner.
Oh well - it's SO bad, empty calories and all... and what it does to your teeth! Ick! Here's hoping I can stick to it!!!0 -
I stopped drinking soda a few years back - if you need motivation, one thing that worked for me was googling "alternative" uses of sodas, like using Coke to clean toilets... that would usually disgusts me enough
Good for you for taking this step! Keep us posted on how you're feeling0
