To all the Paleo eaters...
I am TRYING to head towards eating Paleo. Though I doubt I will ever be full blown Paleo....I love Jif PB and cheese too much.
I would like to make friends and see some peoples diet enteries. I am haveing a hard time getting the right macros in. I am always over in FAT but under in carbs and protein. I have my macros set at 35 carb 35 protein 30 fat.
I haven't finished reading the book I got..."The Paleo Diet Solution"- John Chatham.
It's a huge adjustment... may take me some time.
I am 5'10 and 246ish... And haven't lost the lbs like I thought. 7 lbs in 2 mos.... ugh. I up'd my cals from beginning @1370 for MFP... then taking in some suggestion have up'd it to 1970... Still need to up it on a couple of days to 2100...
BMR is suppose to be 1890.
So, anyway.. enough babbling...
I think if I see some example of daily eating from my peeps... it'll help me head in a right direction.
My food diary is open if someone wants to take a look and suggest/critque.
Feel free to send me a message and/or friend me.

Well I would first get rid of the grains in your diet including tortillas. Then try to get your carbs under 100g per day to start. Get more protein and don't necessarily look at ratios or calories.0

Mine is open and you are free to look. I haven't been paleo for very long, only two weeks and not everything has been perfect, but I do my best! I usually eat between 1,500--1,800 cals tho.0

Well, thanks!
I did say I was Trying.. but wouldn't totally go Paleo..
My Carbs are 35%.. which is right around 150. Don't think I want to go lower than that EVERY day.
And ...I think I do need to pay attention to Calories.. Right?
Am I mistaken or did something change in the trying to lose wt science? Burn more than you take in is the key to losing.
Thanks for the infomation.0 -

There's no way to do Paleo halfway. It's either you're Paleo, Primal or you're not (or unwilling to make a serious change). There's no in-between quite honestly. From your questions, I have a hard time believing you've read any book at all regarding this lifestyle.
There are no grains at all on Paleo or Primal, nor are there beans (peanuts and peanut butter), hydrogenated oils (Jif uses hydrogenated oils), or sugar (sugar in Jif too). You can have cheese under Primal however but it needs to be full fat, raw dairy for the probiotics. From what you've said, you have a lot of weight to lose at 246 lbs. I'd suggest limiting your carbs to under 50 a day with only occasional fruit (2-3x a week at the most) to induce your fat-adaptation, which occurs after eating strict Paleo for three weeks. I'm also 5'10" and was 183 when I started this journey on January 9th. I'm down 25 lbs already. If you keep your carbs under 50, you'll lose a lot faster. The second phase is the slower losing phase which is between 1-2 lbs a week where carbs are kept under 100 grams but it expands your choices in regards to your veggies and fruits. Between 100-150 grams a day is the maintenance phase in which you won't lose, especially if you eat a lot of fruit. And if you consume between 150-300+ grams of carbs, you'll gain weight.
The macronutrient ratio is something like this 70% fat, 20% protein, 10% carbs. For me this means, my BMR is 1546 as a minimum. My percentages are set to get 93 grams of fat, 88 grams of protein (because I work out 3-5 times a week), and 53 grams of carbs a day. Sometimes I get more fat, protein and carbs but try to not go over 100 grams. The macronutrient ratio is based on the premise that the types of calories you intake burn differently. It takes 9 calories for every gram of fat, 4 calories for every protein gram, and 4 calories for every carb calorie.
How much protein are you getting? Should be between 15-30% for Paleo/Primal, on the higher end if you're an athlete.
How much fat are you getting? Should be between 60-80% for Paleo/Primal
Carbs come last between 10-20%, sometimes more depending on your goals but the total number of carbs shouldn't be above 100 grams a day if you're trying to lose. Even in the maintenance phase, that many carbs (above 150 grams daily) are unnecessary. Keep in mind that even if MFP tells you that 10% of your 1800 daily calories are carb calories, you should not be eating 180 grams of carbs on any day if you're doing Paleo/Primal. It doesn't calculate it to keep your carb count static at a max of 100.
When you say "burn more than you take in is the key is losing", it doesn't apply here. Please read the books you purchased. They'll save you a lot of time and questions you might have regarding why Paleo eaters already eat less than the average SAD dieter. It has to do with satiety coming from fat and protein, and trusting our own bodies to eat what we need, hence the lack of calorie counting. I count my calories to make sure I'm getting enough. There are some days I go way over my BMR but other days I struggle with getting enough. I've been trying to get at least 1600 a day and that's why I use MFP. When I first started, I was getting a lot less...somewhere around 900-1100 a day.
With all that said, Paleo/Primal takes a lot of willpower in the beginning but once you get used to it, it gets easier. There are a lot of really good books out there as well as websites. Take the time to explore the reasoning and science behind the diet by reading constantly if you can at least for the first few weeks.0 -

Thank you for such a detail reply. I truly appreciate it.
I have NOT finished reading the book I got.. but I will. And yes I know I have a lot to learn and understand. Obviously.
I am trying...
(Snyde comments aren't really necessary. And whether you believe I have read anything on the subject is no matter. I am learning and trying to get it... don't really need anything other than understanding... maybe a little compassion. I am sure you didn't jump into this perfectly and without fault.)
And yes the cheese I eat is full fat. I thought peanuts were nuts. It's considered a bean?
As I said... a lot to learn.
And it's not gonna happen over night.
My proteins are set at 30%... yet I don't always get all the proteins, nor all the carbs. But I have been over 30+% in my fats.
My macros were set @ carbs30%, Proteins 35%, Fat 35%... now are C=30% P=30% F=40%... I tended to go over in fats since I had been GRADUALLY trying to go with or attempt the Paleo way.
Minus the apparantly evil Peanut butter, my fats come from "good oils" and eggs, pecans....
My diary is open if anyone would want to take a peek.
So, to my original question...
I am interested in Paleo eaters diaries... how they eat in this modern world of processed and sugary foods....
I learn by seeing and doing...So, it would help me to see the meals, snacks, etc ...
Thanks for your time and info...

peanuts are a legume not a nut. legumes (beans) are right behind all grains and sugars for the "no" list. No one expects perfection, but grains, sugars and bad oils must be completely eliminated if under your control. Seriously give the "no-grain-at-all" thing a try for 3-4 weeks.
almond butter is a fave of some who can't give up on the peanut butter easily.
And yes you must get under 100g of carbs in order to begin your journey.
If you eat meat, veggies, nuts and the occasional fruit (for now), for a couple weeks, you will begin to see an impact. At first it does take some concentration, but soon you will not imagine ever wanting those things.0 -

Thanks to all of you for the information.
Especially to monkeydharma.
As to the "good oils" good fats...
I use organic coconut oil in cooking and some olive oil....And I have done that for a while.
The majority of my fats come from pecans... that's a nut right?... and of course evil peanut butter....
And the meats and cheeses I eat... and the occasional egg.
Yes... I will be a gradual one to undertake this way of life.
I would say then, I would be more Primal than Paleo since they are the dairy eaters. Though I do love milk(cow) I don't drink it a lot... But I love cheeses.
I do have another question.. I like to toast lightly my pecans and walnuts. You say to eat them raw...
could someone exlpain this to me?
Also... suggest a good book for Primal eating lifestyle...
Again.. thank you for your time.0 -
