I have two gyms I'm looking at. Only one is really what I would consider a "black iron gym", but both have powerlifting teams and the right equipment for so. One is called Orlando Barbell. You might of heard of it's owner, Brian Schwab. He holds the highest Bench in the 148 weight class, and I believe the highest total as well.

The other gym is called Universal Power and Fitness. The reason I'm considering this one is because it seems to be less "hardcore." I hate to fall in to the stereotype of Planet Fitness, but Orlando Barbell is a bit intimidating. I've yet to take a look at UPF's facility though.

I'm weighing the pros and cons of both, but I'm kind of leaning towards Orlando Barbell. The thing is, I'm brand new. This is a small gym with I believe a small group of members, many of whom squat, bench, and deadlift ridiculous weights. I'd like to go there and get some personal training so I can have my form fixed and be able to properly work on the big 3, but the fact that I'm big and weak just feels like I'm going to stick out like a sore thumb. Anyone have any experience with being a relatively untrained individual going into a smaller, lifting oriented gym?

If the elite lifters will welcome you, and help you with your form and training, then you'd be a fool not to train with them. What i would give to be allowed to train with proper powerlifters in a power lifter gym!0

Answer to your question is: Yes.
Do you think you'd use the first gym less because of your discomfort? And do they offer a free trial? Most gyms do.0 -

This. I wish I had access to this type of gym when I started training.0 -
