Hello All! I am new to the group, but not to the disorder

I was diagnosed with the disorder years ago but dismissed it for so long trying to fix it myself. I finally decided to give treatment a try and have benefited greatly from it. I am still fighting and healing but wanted to introduce myself. My name is Charlotte and I am a 22 year old art teacher from Pennsylvania. Really excited about this group. I have never been apart of a group on MFP (this is my newer account, I have been on this website for over 2 years) :) hoping for support and hearing about everyone else's story.

Hi Charlotte. Welcome. Everyone here is very supportive. We all have the same demons just some are shaped a little differently. What sort of help are you/ did you get!
  • Thanks guys :) I think this will be great.

@summerskier, Well, I did a self-help program as well as therapy (I still see my therapist every 2 weeks) and a psych about every couple of weeks so that she can monitor my medicine. I still have slip-ups and difficult days like I'm sure you all understand (every day is different and can be challenging or a breeze. It really just depends!) I am also on 20mg of Prozac to help with the anxiousness and it is working really well actually. How about you dear?

Charlotte, I haven't been brave enough to do more than speak out here. I have a lot of respect for anyone who gets pro help!

Thanks! It wasn't easy at first. I suffered from what I thought was just lack of control for years and years. I kept starting fresh day after day and just kept failing. I discovered what this disorder was and it gave me hope. After research, therapist hunting and support from my family, I went forward. Its difficult. I would try a self help program first. I got some recommendations if you're ever curious (one book I bought from Barnes and Noble) and then if that isn't enough, therapy. :) I do find comfort in being apart of this group where other people are experiencing the same thing. :)

It was good for me to find out it was actually an eating disorder and not just me having a lack of willpower. I felt like such a failure after each new diet would fail and I'd start over again and again. Now that I know it goes much deeper I can work on understanding myself more, why I give in to food and what I need to do to have recovery.

Count me in too. Been doing this 57 years and didn't know it was a specific disorder. I would be interested in knowing the titles of some books on the subject if anyone can suggest some.

Im not sure but it could be that all dieting may lead to binging. In other words, are there any women (mostly us gals I guess) who have dieted and not ended up binging at some point? I have to wonder if it is just the very act of restriction which makes us do this.

Not for me, What leads me to binging is stress or being angry, or upset, or bored. Emotional eating in general. When I am on a diet and if I want something really bad, I eat that and get right back on the diet. I can allow for it by leaving off something else or exercising more. So this one is not me. It may be with others.
